The word Hamdard is derived from the Persian language which is a combination of two words Ham and
Dard. Ham means a friend or companion and Dard means pain. Hamdard thus means a companion of
pain or who shares the pain of others. Hamdard is a well-known organization in the Asia. It is the biggest
Unani (Natural) Medicine manufacturing concern in the world. It is not merely a commercial venture.
Hamdard started its journey as a health service provider, later expanded its activities to promote education
and to bring the blessings of scientific research to help & improve the living standard of people and
eliminate the sufferings of the humanity.
In Dhaka, Bangladesh Hamdard was established on 1953. The development of Hamdard Bangladesh was
going on step by step with a very slow motion. Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan, a legendary
personality took over the responsibility of Hamdard Bangladesh in 1982. By virtue of his versatile activity,
the tremendous growth and development of Hamdard has been started. A new dynamism came in
Hamdard becomes popular in the country and abroad for its multipurpose humanitarian activities.
Dr. Hakim Md. Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan managing director and chief Mutawalli of Hamdard Bangladesh made
a breakthrough in the history of medical science in Bangladesh. He has succeeded to get the official
recognition of herbal medicine in Bangladesh. His utmost effort made it possible to reintroduce Eastern
Medicine as the bridge between traditional medicine and modern medicine.
