You will find new doors with exciting career vistas opening before you as you enter the Faculty of Science and Humanities
at SRM University. Since its inception in 2003, the faculty has expanded into emerging fields and has been quick to equip
students with high end facilities that will help them achieve great heights.

Objectives

Focus on research
Research scholars have experienced guides and every facility at the postgraduate labs to complete their research projects.
The faculty’s focus on research is part of SRM University’s thrust in encouraging research in every area of study.

Campus activities
The faculty is a center of activity throughout the year, as students and faculty organize and take part in academic as well as
extra curricular events. Faculty members regularly attend and present papers at international/national conferences. Many
have published research papers in reputed international and national journals. Students join top companies for their projects
and are exposed to industry standards.

Sports
A number of clubs prosper in the faculty. Chief among them are the Rotaract Club, N.S.S., Red Cross Society, Fine Arts Club
and Quiz Club. The Sports department is also filled with energy. The faculty has hosted national level competitions in Chess
and Basketball. The students securing gold medals or ranks at the university levels are also generously facilitated by
the management.

As new and exciting careers open up to students, the placement cell is at hand to guide them every step of the way.
The placement cell liaisons with the best companies in each field and provides opportunities to update students and

The charm of numerals and equations holds the limelight here at SRM’s Mathematics
Department. The department caters to the engineering students of B.Tech., M.Tech., M.S.,
and Ph.D. The department also offers a PG course, M.Sc. in Computational Mathematics.

Academics
A highly qualified faculty includes 6 Doctorates and 10 Research scholars to make sure the
best education is at the student’s disposal. The dedicated staff keep themselves abreast
of the latest trends in mathematical applications by taking part in workshops, National and
International conferences.

Research
Considering how mathematics plays a critical role in various fields from vehicle design to
architecture, the faculty encourages research in both fundamental and applied mathematics.

Activities
The Sri Ramanujan Mathematics club acts as a forum for budding mathematicians,
providing them a unique platform to win laurels in the field. It is also the platform for events
that are aimed at making mathematics fun to learn. The club conducts two symposiums, the
Intra Mathematics Festival (IMF) and Engineering Mathematics Festival (EMF), every year.
This club opens up new vistas for budding mathematicians to fly high by winning laurels.

Achievements
The faculty and research scholars have prepared research papers that have appeared in
reputed national and international journals. Some of the studies are being published as
books. The department has also had the opportunity to conduct two international events.
An SRM-BARC collaborative research program is also on the anvil.

Department of Physics
Acceleration has gripped the world of physics in the international arena and research studies in this field
have broken more barriers than just sound. It is linked with the future progress of humankind and the next
generation of SRM students are prepared to be a part of it.

Dedicated, experienced and well qualified faculty members make up the department. They continually
update their grasp on global trends and breakthroughs by attending and presenting papers in national
and international conferences. Research papers have been published in reputed international and national
referred journals.

Facilities:
Well equipped laboratories with modern instruments and hi-tech facilities mark the Department of Physics.
The advanced functions of the laboratory include:
• Preparation and characterization of nano-ceramics
• Low temperature solution growth technique for growing organic and inorganic crystals
• Compressibility/susceptibility measurements for solids and liquids
• Electronic parameters measurements for semiconductors

Academics
The faculty conducts two PG programs. The programs focus on the fields of Industrial electronics and
instrumentation, Bio-medical electronics and instrumentation, Communication systems, Computer
architecture, Electronics & Materials sciences, Hospital industry and Health physics.

Activities
The department conducts seminars and symposiums periodically in emerging areas of materials
technology. Images SRM, the photography club, is attached to Physics department. The club explores and
trains the students in the art of photography, videography, digital art and short film. The club conducts
training programs and competitions regularly.

Department of Chemistry
SRM University’s Chemistry Department has been engaged in opening up the
fascinating world of Chemistry to students since 1985. The department comprises
of a goal oriented group of highly qualified, experienced and dynamic faculty
members, who engage students in M.Sc. and Ph.D. courses.

Academic
The Department of Chemistry has over 15 faculty members whose areas of
expertise and research includes inorganic, organic, physical, environmental,
electrochemical and nanotechnology. They participate in training and development
activities, which keeps them up-to-date in the current development of chemical
science and helps to promote advanced research activities. Students are guided in
their Ph.D. program, PG and UG level programs in Engineering and Technology.

Resources
The department has independent laboratories fully equipped with instruments
and consumables, and advanced equipments for teaching and research activities.
The facilities available in the laboratories include Gas chromatography, UV-visible
spectrophotometer, Bomb calorimeter, High temperature programmable-furnace and
High pressure reactor.

Activities and Achievements


The faculty members have contributed to academics by publishing books, research
articles in journals, presenting papers in conferences and delivering guest lectures.

Research
There are 7 approved guides as resource persons to guide Ph.D candidates.
Currently 10 research scholars are working as part time Ph.D candidates
in the department.

The department has tie-ups with recognized institutions and industries,


R&D laboratories in terms of student project, training and research activities.

Department of Biotechnology
New avenues in microbiology and biotechnology have made these fields exciting places to
work in and explore. The School of Biosciences imparts the best of education through an
experienced and committed faculty. With the promise of a flexible educational experience,
industrial exposure and day to day guidance, students are given every opportunity to
reach higher.

Faculty
To encourage students towards higher learning, the faculty consciously work out
assignments to inspire in them a thirst for knowledge. The faculty have also formed mutually
beneficial links with various industries for student projects and training.

Academics
The school offers a 3 year UG degree and a 2 year PG degree in Biotechnology. Emphasis
is laid on currently subjects such as Microbiology, Molecular genetics, Bio-informatics,
Bio-physics, Immunology, Genetic engineering and Bio-statistics. Students are also given the
edge through Computer applications training.

During the PG degree program, you will be exposed to deeper understanding of various
biosciences including Animal biotechnology, Tissue engineering, Enzyme technology,
Genomics & Proteomics and Environmental bio-technology which form part of the syllabi.
The syllabus is consciously designed to help the students inculcate, at every stage, the rapid
trends and progressive growth in this exciting field.

Resources
Fully equipped labs have all the equipment to assist students for practical training in the
areas of Bio-chemistry, Microbiology, Plant cell, Bio-process technology and more. Students
and faculty also have access to special facilities like the Media preparation laboratory, the
Computer laboratory and the Instrumentation laboratory that are useful for both teaching
and conducting research.

Careers
The demand for talent in the Bio-sciences industries is on the rise. Students can find
engaging careers in the areas of research & development, production, clinical testing
and diagnostic work. Pharmaceutical companies, Hospitals, Horticulture industries and
Conservation organizations provide excellent career platforms.

Objectives
• To advance, evolve and enhance Computer Science fundamentals
• To build the interest in students for greater research
• To guide the students in the development of newer languages
• To create the ability in the students for better hardware production

Academics
The curriculum reflects the depth and scale of Computer Science. Much more emphasis is
laid on the practical understanding of the technology. They are trained in the critical areas
like programming, networking, web systems, information management and
human-computer interaction.

At the PG level students are given a broader technical understanding of current and
emerging technologies in the IT field. They are also introduced to systems engineering
concepts and given a sound grounding in the technological basis of the internet.

Resources
The classroom is designed with an IT environment and has every facility for research and
study. All students have access to computing facilities that allow them to achieve their tasks
with ease.

Industry connect
The school enjoys good relations with some of the top IT companies like CTS, WIPRO
and INFOSYS. Seminars, symposium and workshops are conducted to keep the students
updated with new technologies adopted in different industries. The school also ensures
that students are prepared for their career with soft-skills training, which is as important in
today’s job environment as hard-skills.

Department of English
In a world where effective English is the visa to success, the globalization of business has
brought technical communication to the forefront of academics and industry. Success in this
competitive world depends not only on acquiring knowledge but also on developing effective
communication skills. The Department of English provides students with vital training to
meet the demands of global communication and helps them develop proficiency in English.

Academics
The department consists of nine well qualified faculty members. Among them four are
specialized in ELT whereas the others are specialized in English language & literature
and Advanced level Grammar. The staff are motivated to present papers in international
conferences as well as publish papers in leading journals twice a year.

A course in spoken English has been designed to meet the language needs of students who
come from China and Japan, at the under graduate and post graduate levels.
It aims to improve the student’s fluency and ability to communicate effectively in academic,
professional and social contexts. The course mainly focuses on the development of spoken
and written skills and proficiency in pronunciation, accent and flow of the language.

The department offers (BEC) Business English Certificate (Cambridge University) training
program to the students at all the three levels ( Preliminary, Vantage and Higher).
The department has six qualified BEC trainers. Students are given international accent
training practice in the language laboratory in order to grab BPO opportunities.

Research activities are encouraged and the department offers research programs under the
supervision of a research co-ordination committee chaired by the head of the department
along with the doctoral committee.

Department of Tamil
Pride and a distinct identity mark the language and the Tamil people. The Department of Tamil was
formed in 2004-05 to impart this identity to a fast moving younger generation. A modern syllabus serves
to highlight the cultural traditions of Tamil in different ways so that students are attracted to study further.

Academics
The Tamil syllabus in part I for undergraduate students imparts literature (poetry & prose), history of
literature and language skills for students. The study of journalism is a special feature of this syllabus.

The B.A. Tamil course includes grammar and literature as major subjects. Environmental science,
computer science and competitive examination skills are special subjects to enhance job opportunities
for Tamil graduates.

Faculty
The department has dedicated Tamil professors, who have wide knowledge in literature and grammar.
They have written many publications in reputed Tamil journals.

Research
Research activities are encouraged and more than 10 research scholars are registered in the
department. The research program with a research coordinator committee is spearheaded by the
Head of the Department along with eminent members in the doctoral committee.

Tamil Mandrum
The department plans to constitute a ‘Tamil mandrum’ in the current academic year to develop and
promote inter-cultural communication and knowledge. The association will organize lectures, seminars
and workshops on Tamil literature and language, and conduct inter and intra collegiate competitions to
encourage students to participate in extempore, oratorical competition and to present papers at various
conferences. Tamil mandrum will also publish books in various topics and release internet journals.

Library
The department library is well equipped with more than 500 books in various topics in the language.
New books are added to the Tamil literary section every year.

Department of Foreign Languages


As the world comes to India and Indians make an impact in countries abroad,
techies will find the knowledge of foreign languages gives them the definite edge
over their technical counterparts. The Department of Foreign Languages has
designed courses in French, Japanese, German and Chinese to meet the global
needs and turn these foreign languages into an asset for those who intend to join
multinational companies and look for opportunities abroad.

The Department of Foreign Languages consists of eleven well qualified faculty


members. Some of them have been well associated with either Germany, Japan
or France in their own fields of professional experience. This helps the faculty
members to teach the students not only the foreign language but also immerse
them in the culture of these countries.

FRENCH
French, deemed as a global language, is widely used in Europe and Canada. Not
only that, the course enhances the scope of the engineering students for placement
in companies with French collaborations in India. They are also helped in preparing
for the Level-I exam in French conducted by the French cultural center, Alliance
Française, Nungambakkam, Chennai, which is internationally recognized.

GERMAN
Numerous German companies are emerging in India. The increased cooperation
between the two countries have opened job opportunities in Germany as
well. Learning German helps students to get preference over others in getting
employment in such companies and in seeking employment abroad.

JAPANESE
Engineering students benefit greatly in receiving instruction in the three Japanese
scripts, namely Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. As more and more Japanese clients
seek software solutions from India, knowing the language is a definite advantage for
fresh engineers who intend to join software companies.

SRM University’s School of Management serves as a gateway to the high-profile world of management. The school
trains enterprising young men and women to be industry leaders and decision makers.

The school was rated A+ in “Business India B School survey” (Sep-Oct 2007) and is ranked among the Top 100
B Schools in India (Dalal street Directory 2007)

The school is housed in two independent blocks measuring 150,000 square feet. Facilities include:

The school offers 2 programs: The regular 2-year MBA and PhD in Management. The regular 2-years MBA
program is also offered in Ramapuram and Modi Nagar (U.P) campus. The 2-year degree has been designed for
undergraduate students who have just completed their degree. The doctoral program serves students interested in
becoming teachers in the field.

2-year MBA Program


This program is under the able leadership of highly qualified Dean, supported by experienced faculty members as
well as visiting and adjunct faculty. The Application, Experience and Participation (AEP) Model forms the core of the
curriculum and encourages students to learn through experience.

Specialization
Students are prepared to meet today’s IT-enabled business environments by offering functional specializations
in marketing, finance, human resources, systems and production and super specialization in IT, business
process outsourcing, financial services marketing, retailing, auto industry, risk management and small and
medium enterprises.

Ph. D. program in management


The School of Business Management is committed to high quality knowledge creation through writing case studies
and working papers as well as publishing articles in international journals. Linkages with the global academic
business community facilitate these processes.

Every Ph.D. student collaborates closely with an assigned departmental guide. Visiting international faculty also
mentor research scholars. This additional support raises the standard of learning by exposing research scholars to
cutting-edge research tools. In addition, these relationships cultivate scholars who possess the skills necessary for

The School offers doctorates in finance, marketing, information technology, operations and human resources
management. The school permits external registration as well as full-time admission.

School of Journalism &
Mass Communication
The power of the pen has been given its due and journalism is the most happening field
around. The demand for media professionals is growing with each passing day. With a vision
of encouraging ethical journalism in our country, SRM’s School of Journalism and
Mass Communication shapes students with the zest to perform into journalists of tomorrow.

Facilities:
The best facilities are ensured for students such as:
• State-of-the-art computer lab with internet facility
• Centralised library with internet facility and a department library
• Separate hostel facilities for men and women

Academics
Exposure to Print, Visual, PR and New Media is given importance under the guidance
of highly qualified and experienced faculty. Regular lectures by experts in the industry
combined with regular seminars and workshops along with periodic visits to various media
houses makes it obvious why SRM is the one place all future journalists head to.

Under the stewardship of veteran journalist, author and famous historian S Muthiah, the
school offers:
a) Three-year BA program in journalism and mass communication
b) Six-months Diploma in Journalism for Sri Lankan Tamil journalists
c) One-year PG Diploma in Journalism (Evening) course
A two-year Master’s program in communication will be introduced in 2009-10.

Academic Activities:
Students are given a unique blend of theory and practice with hands on training in media
skills to give them an international perspective and an exposure to newer and higher
learning standards.

A weekly lab newspaper is published by BA students from the 3rd semester onwards, while
the PG Diploma students work on a Lab Newspaper during the 2nd semester.

Social sciences including English, History, Economics, Constitution and Environment form a
part of the curriculum providing a strong knowledge in the fundamentals.

The end of each academic year sees students working at reputed media houses as a part of
their internship program.

Achievements:
The school’s first major international initiative was completed when 20 mid-career Tamil
journalists from Sri Lanka were re-trained for 6 months in 2007, helping them acquire new
media skills. The government approved program was backed by Sri Lankan Press Institute
and funded by the International Media Support of Denmark.

The importance of competent hoteliers is increasing with each passing day as five star hotels and resorts spring up around the country and chefs
are feted at international events. SRM Institute of Hotel Management has been offering quality hospitality education and training for more than
a decade.

SRM Institute of Hotel Management is the only one of its kind with a fully operational super deluxe star hotel set amidst scenic ambience spread
around 5 acres. The institute has two branches:

The SRM Hotel pvt Ltd, Chennai, ideally located on the National Highway, has easy access to industrial areas and tourist sights. It caters 50 well
furnished rooms to its patrons including reputed industries like Ford India Ltd, Visteon, Hyundai Motor India Ltd, Spel Semiconductors, Ucal Fuel
Systems, JPSL, JBM Krupp as well as pilgrims and tourists to the region. The hotel educates 1500 students per year, exposing them to valuable
hands on practical experience.

SRM Hotel Pvt. Ltd, Trichy has 120 well-equipped rooms. The college offers degree and diploma courses in Hotel and Catering Management to
around 400 students every year.

Placements
The Institute assists placement of every successful student at the entry level in the rank of Assistant Manager with a suitable remuneration
package plus liberal perks in the SRM Hotel chain, run by the SRM group. Apart from this, the students are also absorbed in other star-class
hotels like Taj Coromandel, Taj Connemara, Taj Fisherman’s Cove, The Park, Chola Sheraton, The Trident, Ambassador Pallava, Benzz Park Tulip,
GRT Grand, ITC Park Sheration, Le Royal Meridian, Savera, Residency Towers, etc as well as in the airlines, railways and tourism industry. Students
are also placed in hotels abroad like Four Seasons, Best Western and Hilton. This academic year, 127 students were placed so far in the above
hotels and Comfort Inn Marina Towers, Courtyard Marriott, Raintree, RKHS, Taj Maldives, Le Meridien, Dubai are expected for campus interview in
the current academic year.

One of India’s most popular magazines, “The Week” conducted a nation-wide Education & Career survey for the hottest courses and
had accredited SRM Institute of Hotel Management as one among the top 10 colleges offering Hotel Management courses in India.
STUDENTS RECRUITED IN SRM Institute of Hotel Management won the outstanding contributions award in the 2nd National Culinary Conference 2005
STAR HOTELS organized by the Indian Federation of Culinary Association. SRM Institute of Hotel Management celebrated ‘International Chef’s Day’
for the first time. Competitions like debate and carving were held and many colleges participated. The events challenge individual

SRM IHM has been awarded NSS St. John Ambulance’s certificate in appreciation of training maximum number of students in

Training Methodology
The entire course is based on the American system as followed by Cornell University, the premier institute of hotel management in the world
adopting the T-GROUP Therapy concept. Students participate and interact with the faculty for complete comprehension and understanding of the
subjects. Students are encouraged to go beyond the purview of the syllabi and emphasis is laid on hands on training in various departments. The
modern infrastructure helps the students to widen their intellectual horizon.

Foreign Students
It is a matter of great pride that students from western countries opt to pursue their professional training at the SRM Institute of Hotel
Management. The Institute earlier offered International Postgraduate program in Facility Management – From Rijkshoge School Ljselland,
Deventer, The Netherlands.

Present activities
Apart from the regular academic activities, experts from the industry are invited to give guest lecturers to update the students
regarding current trends in hospitality industry. Students are sent for mandatory industrial training for a period of 16 weeks, which
helps them gain hands on experience in all major departments. Teachers are exposed to “train the trainer” program every year to
evaluate and upgrade their knowledge.

Extra Curricular Activities


The students actively take part in NSS, Economic Times Club, Rotaract club and NCC events as well as blood donation camps,
environmental awareness programs like tree plantation, social activities and inter college cultural activities. The students also
participate in various district, state and national level sports events.

Education has as one of its fundamental aspects, the imparting of culture from generation to generation. The school of Teacher Education, under
Dr. Vinaitheerthan and his team of proficient faculty, is engaged in drawing out the latent teaching and learning abilities in every student.

Curriculum
Crafted to produce outstanding educators and researchers, the curriculum teaches you to think from multiple viewpoints, relate it to other
subject areas and seek to understand the subject matter accurately. The program uses interdisciplinary instruction and effective questioning as
appropriate tools. Teachers are trained in critical thinking and problem solving strategies as well as in oral and written communication.

Students are periodically assessed with standardized and teacher-constructed tests. Their progress is tracked throughout the program to ensure
they gain the maximum benefit.

Teacher Education Portfolio


As they proceed through the teacher education program, students maintain a portfolio that relies on the concept of reflective action as its principle
of organization. This portfolio offers process of self-assessment in four broad areas: curriculum, assessment, relationships, and environment. This
promotes growth through analytical and critical evaluation regarding the goals and objectives of the program.

Academic environment
The faculty creates positive and caring environments for student development and learning. A variety of teaching methods and materials utilizes
media and technology to the maximum. The faculty also plans informative sessions that involve individual development as well as teamwork.

Specialization
The program trains teachers to meet global requirements and standards, and prepares them for ICT and ET–enabled classroom environments.
The program also offers several specializations including:

Research
Presently over 12 research scholars are pursuing their doctorate in Education. Competent supervisors guide them through their research projects.
Apart from academic research, the department takes part in projects with various national and state level teacher education organizations.

The school has established relationships with various organizations at national and international levels committed to education. This has a positive
bearing on research outcomes, learning opportunities and all round development of the student.

Working with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA)


The school took initiative to implement several cooperation projects involving SRM University and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) at various levels.

• Activity Based Learning project defined and implemented on the foundation of the institutional and pedagogic needs of the Tamil Nadu State,
and the competence and capacity of the Primary, Upper Primary and High schools to meet the present day changes and needs in the
educational system.

• Cooperation based training programs through Block Resource Teacher Education (BRTE) and Cluster Resource Centres (CRCs) on activities
related to pedagogical research and development work, adapting the best practices in education, action research and community participation;
among other innovations focused on achieving the Minimum Levels of Learning (MLL) one of the framework conditions for learning.

• Acquired sufficient experience in the event of establishing a long term program for teacher education in collaboration with Sarva Siksha Abhiyan
(SSA) by giving orientation and in-service training programs for the teachers in government schools at various levels.

Activities
The school actively takes part in various humanitarian activities including community participation through Health education, Adult literacy,
Youth Red Cross (YRC), Adolescent education, Functional literacy, Telugu minority school, Computer training, Radio participation through
SRM-FM radio, Social relevant projects etc.

Linkage cell
The linkage cell was set up in response to the national needs and cultural, social and economic context of teacher education. The objectives of the
cell are:
• To maximise the benefits of the comparative advantages of teacher education by the School Linkage Cell and how these strengths can
contribute to promoting cooperation among the various schools
• To support partnership models – some of the joint applications include Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), Directorate of Teacher Education, Research
and Training (DTERT), National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT)
• To include cooperative research and development work relevant for improving the quality of the teacher education among the various other State
and National Universities
• To offer computer training in collaboration with Intel covering various schools in and around Kattankulathur block, Kancheepuram District

SRM STE & R has adopted some of the schools in Kattankulathur Block and the best practices were put into experimentation and development.
Placement opportunities are provided to all the students of SRM STE & R. Some of the recruiting boards include: Indian Council for
Secondary Education (ICSE), Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), Central Board for Secodary Education (CBSE) and other private and aided
schools across the globe

Department of Visual Communication


Today a person has so many new ways to communicate in real time that the need for
professionals in this field has never been greater. Since its beginnings in 1997, SRM’s
Department of Visual Communication has grown to over 300 students. Each of these
students receive the best of modern facilities, hands on training and guidance from
experienced faculty.

Facilities
Multimedia lab: Equipped with more than a 100 high end computers, this lab is divided
into a 2D animation studio and a 3D animation studio. Here students learn graphic skills
with the latest softwares in the industry.

Photography lab: State of the art lighting equipment and photography settings set this
lab apart. The modern darkroom with six cubicles can accommodate more than 30 students
for instruction in one go. The lab also has a separate photography studio and portfolio studio.

Television production lab: This modern studio with its blue matte setting and
multicamera setup caters to both film and small screen training. The advanced lighting
systems allow students unparalleled freedom to experiment. It also has an exclusive editing
and audio lab.

Drawing and Graphic Design lab: The lab has more than 100 drawing tables for
students’ use. The department also has a modern viewing room.
