Through the Years
Celebrating the Bond Between Mother
and Daughter with Francine Rivers
Every family has a story. Stories of loss and
love, stories of tragedy and triumph, stories of
laughter and tears. These are the stories that
define or develop us. These are the stories of
the unbreakable bonds we share.
As a daughter, sister, granddaughter, wife, moth-
er and grandmother, Francine Rivers knows the
weight of these bonds. It was in looking at
the women in her family and at the relation-
ship between her mother and grandmother, in
particular, that she was inspired to write her
most recent epic saga, originally written as
one story, but published as two—Her Mother’s
Hope, available now, and Her
Daughter’s Dream, coming in
September.
Although fictional in nature,
“quite a bit of it” is true to
Francine’s life.
Like Marta Schneider, the
central character in the first
half of Her Mother’s Hope, Three Generations
Francine’s grandmother was
a strong-willed, Swiss transplant who made her
way to the Central Valley of California where
she raised her family and determined to live out
the rest of her days.
But Francine’s parents had other plans. Due
to the cost of living, they had settled on retir-
ing in Oregon. This meant selling their home
and the adjacent cottage, where Francine’s
grandmother lived, and moving away from
California. The home they built in Oregon was
custom designed for its occupants, including
Francine’s ailing grandmother. When her par-
ents invited Grandma to come live with them,
she declined.
As a young mother, living in California herself,
Francine remembers her grandmother’s final
day here on earth. Her grandmother had suf-
fered a stroke, and Francine’s parents hurried
down to California to be with her as soon
as they heard the news. But, she had passed
away before Francine’s mom and dad could get
there.
Francine recalls her mom telling her, “I think
she died deliberately—willed herself to die—
just so we’d never have to talk things out.”
“That just haunted me,” Francine admits. “They
were both strong Christian women. They loved
each other deeply, but there was a misunder-
standing at the end.”

From this, Francine has seen the importance of
reconciliation. “I think we need to accept one
another and hear people out,” Francine shares.
“And then to extend grace no matter what the
circumstances, because while we were yet sin-
ners, Christ died for us. And we’re supposed to
be that way with other people.
“If you knew this was your last day with some-
one, what would you say to them? Don’t wait.
Say it now,” Francine adds. “It’s important for
them to know that you really love them and you
want to work things out.”
It was the questions that arose from this mis-
understanding, as well as her
mother’s well-documented but
“emotionless” journals, that
prompted Francine to probe
deeper into the story behind
her mother and grandmother’s
estranged relationship.
And this is how Francine has
generated all of her stories—
with a question.
Faith and Fiction
When Francine began writing in 1974, she was
pregnant with her first child. After losing her
first child, she put the manuscript in her closet
and stopped publishing.
With her husband’s gentle prodding, Francine
began to write again and her career took off in
the general market, a time Francine now refers
to as her B.C. days. During that time, she sold
nearly four million racy romance novels, all of
which she presently owns the rights to and are
no longer in print.
When Francine accepted Jesus as her Lord
in her late 30s, she couldn’t write for almost
three years. She felt it was something that God
had taken away from her because writing had
become the priority in her life, even to the point
of being above her husband and three children.
During that time, she made some exterior
changes. But it wasn’t until a little boy next
door invited Francine to church that the inte-
rior changes began to take place. Unlike the
churches in southern California that no longer
seemed to be preaching the gospel, this church
in northern California practiced expository
preaching. Francine invited her husband, Rick,
but because he was still skeptical of the church,
the couple attended an in-home Bible study.
And that changed everything.

It was in the study, which was on the Minor
Prophets, when Francine read Hosea and felt
God telling her, “This is the love story I want
you to write.” At that time, Francine never
thought she’d write again. But it was this clear
nudging from the Lord that led her to write her
first book as a Christian—Redeeming Love.
Considered her statement of faith, Redeeming
Love changed the whole direction of her writing
career, which currently includes 11 novels and
10 novellas in the Christian market.
“My quest is to find God’s perspective,” Francine
shares. “The goal is to whet [readers'] appetite
for the real thing—a relationship with Christ
and to get back into the Word and see it with
fresh eyes.”
From Generation to Generation
In her own family, Francine has seen how a
transformation in faith has affected one genera-
tion to the next.
“Different generations have different ways of
looking at faith,” Francine asserts. “[My grand-
mother’s generation] looked at it as God helps
those who help themselves…and my mother’s
generation was God gives salvation to those
who serve…my generation, the wild 60s, was
God is dead…and then my daughter’s gen-
eration is very polarized. There are those who
absolutely reject any faith message at all and
others who are zealous in dedicating their lives
to the Lord.”
This legacy of faith also plays
out in Francine’s two-part
series, Her Mother’s Hope and
Her Daughter’s Dream. In Her
Mother’s Hope, Marta showed
her daughter, Hildemara,
tough love because she didn’t
want her daughter to grow up Francine & Shannon
to be like her sister who was
very weak and co-dependent. But as Hildemara
grows, she understands the sacrificial love her
mom showed to make her strong.
“Very often, children don’t understand when
there is sacrificial love going on,” Francine
shares. “When I was growing up, my mom
never kissed me, never hugged me, never held
me on her lap. And I took it as, ‘there must be
something wrong with me because she doesn’t
love me.’ It was a long time before I realized it
was a sacrifice for her because she had active
tuberculosis.”

The only way Francine’s mom could be in the
same home with her family was if Francine’s
grandmother moved in and took care of Francine
and her brother separate from her mother. Later
on in life, her mother was able to hug and kiss
Francine; and Francine understood that the
sacrifices her mom made, as well as the sacri-
fices many mother’s today make, were out of
necessity.
In Her Daughter’s Dream, it’s basically a pass down
relationship where the grandmother, Hildemara,
raises May Flower Dawn while Carolyn goes
back to college. This causes some tension
between Carolyn and her mother, Hildemara,
as Carolyn tries to reclaim her relationship with
her daughter. In the end, it’s May Flower Dawn
and her faith in the Lord that helps bring about
restoration among all three of the women.
Lessons Learned
In Francine’s life, it has also been the common
bond of faith in the Lord that has sustained her
and her family, even during the hard times.
Francine recalls going through a very challeng-
ing phase with sexual promiscuity in college.
Her mom, unaware of the situation, called and
told Francine, “It can’t be sunshine all the time
or the flowers won’t grow for lack of rain.” And
Francine never forgot that.
“God could turn things to good, no matter
what you’ve done,” Francine says, remember-
ing her mother’s sage advice.
And Francine has seen that
come true in her own life. “He
redeemed my past and turned
it to His purpose.”
God has redeemed not only
her past but also her mar-
riage and family. Years after
a rocky time in Francine's
marriage, Francine’s daughter,
Shannon, told her what a strong couple they
are. Their example was a witness to her.
For Francine, that is what being a godly mother
means—living her faith. “It’s not what we say;
it’s what we do,” she explains. “Our children
and our grandchildren are watching us whether
we know it or not.
“My hope is that they will center their lives
on Christ—heart, mind, soul, strength…every-
thing—and that they’ll follow in the ways of
the Lord.”

More Than Skin Deep
Feminine loveliness as God intended it to be

I once talked with a graphic designer who
worked for a major clothing label. “In real-life,
no model really looks as perfect as what you see
in clothing ads or on catalog covers,” he told us.
“We digitally alter her photo. We remove several
inches from her waist and thighs. We enhance
her chest size. We air-brush her skin.”
I recently read an interview with a famous
Victoria’s Secret model who admitted,
“Everything about my beauty is fake. From my
hair to my nose to my toes—it’s all fake.”
Our world bombards us with an image of femi-
nine beauty that is not even based upon reality.
That standard is what we as women are told to
pursue, and that image is what guys are told to
desire.
In many Christian circles we are told to appreci-
ate our own unique beauty and accept ourselves
for who we are. Meanwhile, we are constantly
assaulted by a world that insists we aren’t allur-
ing enough—that we need to change our bod-
ies, our clothes, and our personality in order
to be more appealing. And the same culture
that trains us as young women to become sexy,
sultry, and seductive also trains men to lust after
women who possess those traits.
The moment we walk out our front door, we
see clusters of guys drooling over any skimpily
dressed, well-proportioned female that passes by.
We watch them lustfully grin at sultry, bikini-
clad models on the covers of magazines. We hear
them talk about the incredible bodies of the hot-
test young singers or actresses on TV. We even
catch many of them sneaking frequent peaks at
Internet porn.
And pretty soon the message, “you are beautiful
the way you are” falls empty and flat. We are
told to love ourselves, but all we feel is worthless
and ugly.
Some of us buy in to the pressures all around us,
desperately trying to change our bodies, starve
ourselves, get plastic surgery, get a make-over, go
on a diet—do anything in our power to somehow
make ourselves appealing to the opposite sex and
to the culture. Others give up completely, toss-
ing the idea of beauty to the wind and becoming
sloppy, grungy, and guy-like—letting the whole
world know that they are sick and tired of the
culture’s ridiculous standards for women, and
that they couldn’t care less about being pretty
or feminine.

Either way, very few young women escape the
culture’s relentless agenda with any self-con-
fidence intact. The pressure to meet society’s
expectations is literally destroying countless
young girls’ lives.
For years, I allowed pop-culture to define my
understanding of feminine beauty. I inundated
my mind with modern magazines, movies, T.V.
and the fashion industry—a world that valued
the “Victoria Secret model” look and attitude.
I was surrounded by peers who applauded self-
obsessed, arrogant, sexually aggressive young
women. I tried to venture as close to those stan-
dards as possible, while still somehow maintain-
ing my Christianity.
When God overtook my life, He had to rebuild
my understanding of feminine beauty. “I have a
completely different pattern for your femininity,”
He seemed to say, “One that reflects My glory
and not the empty charm of this world.”
When I finally began to discover His pattern
for lasting beauty—the empty sensuality of this
world lost all its appeal.
I discovered that when Christ overtakes a wom-
an’s life and transforms her from the inside
out—she becomes truly feminine—a picture of
elegance, grace, and loveliness blended with sac-
rificial selfless devotion to her King. She becomes
a true lady, carrying herself with poise and con-
fidence, yet deflecting all attention away from
herself and toward Jesus Christ. She is enchant-
ingly mysterious, holding her inner life sacred
and guarding her heart with quiet tenacity.
Christ-centered femininity is truly a sight to
behold. It’s a beauty that does not draw attention
to the woman, but to Jesus Christ. It’s a radiance
that is not dependent upon age, circumstance,
or physical enhancements. It’s a loveliness that
flows from deep within—the refreshing beauty
of Heaven, of a life transformed from the inside
out by Jesus Christ. In 1880, Christina Rosetti
wrote:
How beautiful are the arms, which have embraced
Christ—the eyes which have gazed upon Christ,
the lips which have spoken with Christ, and the
feet which have followed Christ.
There is no other path to lasting beauty. To
effervesce with captivating loveliness, we must
be overtaken by the Author of all true beauty.
Charm is deceitful and beauty is fleeting—but
a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.

From Pew to Promised Land

I watched her. For days. For weeks. For months
that turned into years.
This woman was filled with God’s power,
overwhelmed with His joy and consumed with
His peace. She heard God’s voice on a regular
basis and was seeing evidence of His presence in
the regular rhythms of her life. She would pray
and then believe. Expect and then see. Ask and
then receive.
So I watched her. She was a wife, a mom, a
daughter, a sister, a regular woman with problems
and concerns just like mine, and yet her life was
different in so many ways. More than anything, I
wanted what she had, and I was determined to
figure out how to get it. Our first conversation
over two piping hot cups of tea began with a
shower of questions. I just couldn’t help myself.
I was so curious about her relationship with God
and how what she’d learned on the pew had
become such a startling reality on the pavement
of her life.
That first conversation led to deeper, more
intriguing ones that kept me on the edge of my
seat. Like a little schoolgirl with my chin in my
hands, I soaked in her wisdom and reveled in
the times she laid her hands on me and prayed.
A refreshing friendship developed, and I was
challenged to be one of the few who would refuse
to trust God with an ordinary faith or settle for
a complacent walk with Him. I was compelled,
not just to hear about God on Sunday but to
expect to experience what I’d learned about Him
throughout every other day of the week. I wanted
more of Him, more of His Spirit, more of His gifts,
more of His fruit, more of His power, and more of
His manifest presence in my life.
I must admit, it’s been quite a surprising journey.
But once my appetite had been whet, there was
no turning back. I was ruined. Mundane Christian
living would no longer suffice. Not then, not now,
and by God’s grace, not ever again.
I’m so thrilled that you are with me for this ride
because having company makes any road trip
more fun. This expedition began for me several
years ago and is still in progress. God’s call from
mundane Christianity to a radical experience of
Him has taken me down roads that, honestly,
have been quite narrow. Not many travelers have
chosen to take this route. It appears that not
much has changed in two thousand years. While
definite numbers are not known, it is believed that
between two and three million Jews were freed
from Egypt with the opportunity to experience

the milk and honey promised by Yahweh. Yet only
two of the original multitude of adult pilgrims
would ever walk on Canaan’s soil.
That’s a startling ratio. Two in two million.
Hmmm . . .
One-in-a-million.
I guess I can see why many don’t choose to go
all the way with God. I’ve sure been in that
category myself at times. It’s easier to stay on the
main road where there are more people and far
less uncertainty. And besides, the travel isn’t easy
when you’re headed in the direction of abundant
living. While I’d like to tell you that the sun has
glistened on every leg of the trip and the cool
winds of ease and convenience have brushed
across my face without incident, I can’t. On the
contrary, there have been some days when I’ve
had to take cover from the storms that life often
brings. On occasion I’ve had to whisper a prayer
for help when loneliness knocked on my front door
and came in to stay a while. When I’ve met other
travelers willing to brave these winding roads, our
eyes have met, and an instant heart connection
has been made. Without having to say much,
we’ve encouraged each other to continue.
I thought I knew where God was taking me when I
first started out, but each leg of this voyage has led
into territory I’ve never seen before. Sometimes
it’s exciting, and other times it’s daunting. Either
way, it’s a ride I’d rather take with you.
I can’t guarantee you much, but I can say with full
confidence that you won’t be bored. God’s way is
too unusual and mysterious for boredom even to
be an option.
It’s been quite a ride so far, and I don’t want to
encounter what’s next by myself. In the pages of
this book, we’ll traverse spiritual territory that
will cover mountain peaks and deep valleys,
grassy knolls and barren sand dunes, but the
journey will be worth it. With the turn of each
page, you and I will round another corner. What
we’ll meet around one bend will bring a smile to
the depths of our souls while others will create a
sting of conviction that will send us straight to
our knees. Either way, the prize of abundant living
will make the trip well worth it. So buckle up and
grab a venti-sized latte. You are in for the ride of
your life.

Dramatic Change

Some people really do have reasonably stable
homes and haven’t suffered a major loss. I don’t
happen to know many of them, but surely they
exist out there somewhere. Goodness knows,
I probably don’t interact with many personally
because I tend to attract recovering wrecks like
myself. Of course, I prefer the term redeemed
over recovering wrecks, but I’d answer to either
one as long as you’ll let me tell you about my
Redeemer and Recoverer. You might be one of
those rarities who has enjoyed a fair amount of
stability and a minimal amount of loss, but none
of us can avoid change. In fact, you can’t get past
the delivery room without experiencing sudden
and dramatic change. We take our first breath of
terrestrial air in total shock. Christ alone is “the
same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews
13:18). We, on the other hand, are in constant,
hair-raising, stomach-turning flux. As the old
saying goes, nothing stays the same but change.
Most women find a tremendous amount of
security in sameness. Sometimes we’ll stay in
a destructive situation because we reason that
what we know is better than what we don’t
know. We’ll stay in a job we hate because we’d
have to change insurance companies. We’ll keep
going to a church God has long since prompted
us to leave, because it’s what we know. We’ll stay
best friends with somebody we haven’t liked in
ten years because it’s too much trouble to make
a new one. And anyway, the new friend might
want us to change. And we hate change. If we’re
big enough control freaks, we might manage to
keep a handful of things the same, but to be sure,
we don’t just hold on to them; we strangle them
half to death.

But then, some of us experience bigger changes
than these. Dramatic changes. Changes that
change everything. A skiing accident, a bank-
ruptcy, or a stock market crisis. Hearing from
your nine-year-old that your ex-husband is get-
ting remarried. Finding out from the obstetri-
cian that three babies are showing up on that
sonogram. You see, dramatic change isn’t always
bad, but it’s always big. Our security is easily
threatened by anything unknown yet suddenly
unavoidable.
Many of us have learned the hard way that one
phone call from a relative or an employer can

be the end of life as we know it. Even when we
know that God is in the picture and every end
leads to a new beginning, right at that moment
of discovery, we tend to feel that everything won-
derful is over. Does it suddenly sound like we’re
talking about loss again instead of change? As we
keep digging around for roots of insecurity, we’re
going to find that most of them are intertwined
underground. Case in point: our hearts often
translate sudden and dramatic change as either
instability or a form of loss. Sometimes it hits us
as both.
When I was fifteen years old, my dad moved
our family from a small Arkansas town where
we’d lived for thirteen years to Houston, Texas,
the biggest city in the South. I went from a high
school of 900 to one splitting at the seams with
4,700 kids. That dramatic life change not only
brought a heightened sense of instability to an
already unstable home, it also brought the loss of
lifelong peers—many of whom I needed to lose,
incidentally. Though change ended up working
in my favor, the process of working through that
loss was still difficult.

I chose to make dramatic change a category of
its own because even though it’s such a fact of
life in the human experience, we tend to dismiss
its potential impact on our souls. But a history of
unwelcomed changes can be a breeding ground
for insecurity, because it invites you to become
addicted to dread. You learn to live life with
the constant expectation that something bad is
about to happen. And because life is life, eventu-
ally something bad will happen, deepening your
commitment to forecasting doom. You develop
into your own false prophet, and if you don’t
stop yourself, you won’t rest until you’re proved
true. It’s a miserable trap of self-inflicted inse-
curity. You can cheat yourself of ever enjoying
the terrific season you’re experiencing because
you’re waiting any moment for it to change—
and always for the worse. When we become
psychologically dependent upon crisis, it actually
becomes our life motivator, and if we don’t have
a present crisis, we’ll learn to create one.

Q & A with Dr. Dobson
Dr. Dobson, you have spent more than three
years studying and writing about girls. What
conclusions have you drawn about their gen-
eral health and wellbeing?
Dobson: Although our daughters are doing
rather well academically and on some measures
of social and personal health, I am extremely
concerned about them in many ways. They are
under enormous pressures rarely experienced
by their mothers, grandmothers and previous
generations. Today’s little girls are being enticed
to grow up too fast and are encountering chal-
lenges for which they are totally unprepared.
That is a generalization with many exceptions,
of course, but far too many females are in seri-
ous trouble.
What kinds of difficulty are you seeing?
Dobson: The turmoil is evident within an array
of behaviors that make no sense to family mem-
bers, friends and onlookers. For example, there
is a rising incidence of eating disorders, anorexia
and bulimia. Ninety percent of those affected
are girls, beginning very early in life. Some of the
tiny anorectics are still in kindergarten!
Other signs of it are seen in cutting and muti-
lating themselves and piercing their tongues,
lips noses, eyebrows, ears, navels, nipples and
their private parts with spikes and rings. Some
try to symbolize darkness and death in their
fashion choices and bodily adornment. Others
are involved in sexual aggression, drugs and
alcohol, bullying, deceit and rebellion at home
and in school.
You are right. Those behaviors make no sense
to adults. What are the forces that lead in this
direction?
Dobson: Helping to promote some of this anti-
social behavior is an array of “bad girls” on
parade throughout the culture. They are pop
icons, starlets, and American Idols who are
highly influential among teens. The unfortunate
fact is that these brash superstars have become
role models for millions of girls. They cause vul-
nerable youngsters to despise the way they look.
So they hate themselves for what they are and
what they can never be.
These are among the reasons why I am so con-
cerned about girls. They are tender and more
easily wounded than their brothers. And politi-
cally correct or not, their inherent emotional
nature makes them more easily manipulated.

deep within their feminine souls. This is why
they open themselves without commitment to
guys who might, given a miracle, give them the
affirmation they crave. They are hoping against

ingly, those unmet needs are created by some-
thing missing in the girl’s relationship with her
mother and/or father. Usually it is the father!

Choosing Forgiveness

my severest test, came when I least expected it.

In the fall of 2006, I was as happy as I thought
any woman could be. My marriage, though given
to periods of ebb and flow in emotional con-
nectedness, felt strong. I knew Ted loved me and
I loved him, and I trusted that we were faithful
to each other. I felt that everyone in my family
was in a good place, as each of my five children
were growing up and achieving personal success.
Our church, which began in the basement of
our home twenty-two years earlier, had grown
to a congregation of fourteen thousand, and an
air of enthusiasm and vitality filled the hallways
and sanctuary. Our church seemed to me to be
more vibrant and healthier than ever. Ted was
well loved and respected as the senior pastor,
and I loved being his wife and sharing this call
with him. Three years earlier, Ted had been
elected president of the National Association of
Evangelicals (NAE), which had catapulted him
into national prominence. I was proud of him
and felt he was the best man for the job and that
our church was behind him.
At that time, I was teaching and directing the
women’s ministries at our church, which had
become my passion. By the fall of 2006, I was
overseeing 150 women’s small groups that met
regularly. On Sunday mornings, I taught a class
of approximately three hundred women and
Sunday evenings a class of one hundred college-
age women, and I had launched a midweek
meeting I called Women Belong, which was open
to all the women in our church and city. I taught
women that if they loved God or were just inter-
ested in finding out about Him, they belonged to
Him, and we belonged to each other. I used this
meeting to assure women that none of us need
ever feel isolated or alone—as I was sure I would
never be. I was connected to these women and

deeply devoted to them and felt their affection
for me as well. I loved God, my family, and my
church. I was at that supreme season of life when
I felt everything was finally coming together, and
I was as satisfied as I thought a human being
could be.
Then came the fateful day that November, when
my world came crashing in on me. My husband
was accused of having a secret life involving
infidelity and illicit drugs. The result was public
scandal, and because of prolific coverage by the
media, many in the church world were shocked,
embarrassed, and angry. Our church bore the
greatest shock, and the people’s initial disbelief
turned to deep sorrow and shame when Ted
finally confessed the truth. Our family was hurt-
ing and unsure of our future. The initial days of
revelation and coming to terms with the truth
created a sorrow greater than I thought I could
bear. My heart was thoroughly broken. I couldn’t
sleep and tried to pray through the dark hours
of the nights to get some comfort and regain
perspective. I was losing my confidence in the
security of my marriage to the man I loved more
than my own breath, the safety and dignity of my
children, the comfort of the life I had built, and
the church I was deeply devoted to. Every core
belief I held was being challenged. Everything
I held dear was being ripped from me. In a few
short days, my life as I had known it and that I
had so lovingly embraced, was demolished.
The following weeks and months grew darker as
I felt we were being torn from our church. Every
belief I held about the purpose for the church and
the strength of the church to help us in our dif-
ficulties was dismissed by certain decision makers,
and we were denied access to our church family
at a time when we needed them the most. I des-
perately wanted the love and support of people
we knew, with whom we had a history. Even our
children felt oddly separate and without support-
ive relationships because this was the only church
they had ever known.
Each of us will face dark hours in this life. When
they strike unexpectedly and disrupt our lives, we
have to decide who we are, what we really believe,
and what we care enough about to defend. These
decisions can provide a guide for us when dark-
ness overshadows our way. I hope that my story
will inspire you, when your darkest hour comes,
to rise to the challenge, face it head-on, and let it
reveal your true conviction and strength.

What About Me?

When we act as a consumer in our marriages,
we feel a sense of entitlement to look good, feel
good, be right, and be in control. We position
ourselves in our relationship to get what we
want. And if things don’t turn out the way we
feel they should, we want to make our spouse
pay until it does.
Time after time I hear people say things like
this:
“He doesn’t make me feel sexy.”
“I don’t feel appreciated.”
“She never listens to me.”
“He’s always spending his free
time with his buddies.”
These statements are clear signs of entitlement.
When we are aware of and begin to question
those self-seeking desires, we can begin to free
ourselves from fear and selfishness. The possibil-
ity of truly loving our spouse, or what I like to call
“othering,” emerges.
I borrow the term “othering” from Old Testament
scholar Walter Brueggemann, who writes in his
book The Covenanted Self, “I take the liberty
of using the word ‘other’ as a verb, for I mean
to suggest that ‘other’ is not simply a counter-
object, but it is the risky, demanding, dynamic
process of relating to one who is not us . . . ”
Dr. Brueggemann is speaking of the manner
in which we relate to God, but this term aptly
applies to how we relate to all others, particularly
our spouse. Othering is simply loving your spouse
by willing their good. While the consumer society
tells us that we can only learn to love others if
we love ourselves first, othering suggests that
we love ourselves best when we love the other
first. This is a principle that guides a kingdom
marriage.
The challenge of othering lies in the possibility
of suffering. Willing the good of our spouse often
puts us in a vulnerable place because they are
free to hurt us as much as they are free to love
us. Our spouse is free to use us, abandon us,
manipulate us, betray us, lie to us, and so on. It’s
awful to even think about.
So what do most of us do? We instinctively want
to protect ourselves from the risks of being in
relationship with the other. We want to keep
our marriage about ourselves as much as we can.
It’s the only way we can survive and make sure
our spouse doesn’t rob us of what we feel we are
entitled to.
There are three basic strategies we employ to do
this. We hide, we blame, and we attack.

Hide. Adam and Eve did this in the garden after
they disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit.
Hiding is another form of covering up. Feeling
ashamed, Adam and Eve covered up their naked-
ness with leaves. We hide what we think others
will judge and use for themselves. For instance,
if we did something wrong that may put our
spouse’s view of us at stake, we cover up the
mistake.
Blame. We blame God and others much like
Adam did when he told God, “It’s Your fault I
sinned. You are the one who gave me the woman
who caused me to stumble.” We place the rea-
sons for our failures on God, our spouse, or our
circumstances. We can even blame ourselves and
hide in our guilt so we don’t have to face the pain
we may have caused others.
Attack. We attack our spouse much like Satan
attacked God when he accused God of being
a liar by withholding the Tree of Knowledge of
Good and Evil from Adam and Eve. I’m sure
you’ve heard the saying, “The best offense is a
great defense.” By launching an all-out assault on
our spouse’s character with such generalizations
as “you always” and “you never,” we think we can
distract or keep them from taking whatever we
feel entitled to. We can attack through sarcasm,
name-calling, and threatening violence.
C. S. Lewis captures this reality in his book The
Four Loves:
“To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything
and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly
be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it
intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even
an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and
little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up
safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in
that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will
change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreak-
able, impenetrable, irredeemable. The alternative to
tragedy … is damnation. The only place outside of
Heaven where you can be perfectly safe from all the
dangers and perturbations of love is Hell. I believe that
the most lawless and inordinate loves are less contrary
to God’s will than a self-invited and self-protective
lovelessness.”
To other is to be vulnerable and to be honest
with ourselves and our spouse about who we
are and what lies underneath the facade of our
defenses. Just as Jesus said the truth would set
us free, exposing the truth of ourselves and our
needs brings us a step closer to the freedom of
experiencing a transformational marriage.

This Is It
In her book Flirting with Faith, Joan Ball candidly
writes about her journey from atheism to the
unexpected moment when she was instantly
aware of the Truth.
My understanding of the church-member-
ship thing was still a little sketchy. Best I
could tell, signing up with a certain church
presupposed a heightened level of com-
mitment, or maybe it just indicated that
you intend to stick around. While I was
okay with getting involved in some church
activities or playing in the band, saying
“I do” to anything involving Jesus was a
commitment I was not willing, able, or
interested in making.
Sure, given the havoc I had wrought on
myself and on others in my twenties, I
could almost accept the notion that I might
be sinful by nature. I’d even come to a place
in my thirties, through the literature and
guidance of a 12-step program, where I
could pray to a “power greater than myself”
with some assurance that it was better to
pray than not to pray. But Jesus? The Old
and New Testaments? Eternal life? Martin
believed in all of that stuff, but not me.†
Perhaps like Joan, you’ve been content simply
praying and doing the church thing up to a
certain point. And there may be days when you
are more aware of your sin nature than others. In
fact, you may even find some comfort in know-
ing that you are “better than most” because of
the mere fact that you do these things. But still,
there seems to be something missing.
In this information age, it’s easy to assume that
knowing about Jesus is the same as knowing
Jesus. But Jesus said in one of His final prayers
before the cross, “Now this is eternal life: that
they may know you, the only true God, and
Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (John 17:3).
Knowing Jesus, rather than knowing about Jesus,

means having a personal relationship—heart,
mind, body and soul—with the one and only
true God by believing that Jesus is who He says
He is. That is, the Son of God who came to do
His Father’s work.
This work is the work of salvation from the pen-
alty of sin for all mankind—the penalty of death
(Romans 6:23). Jesus accomplished this work,
paying the penalty for our sins, through His own
sinless death on the cross and His resurrection
when He raised Himself back to life and won the
victory over sin and death.
Because of this, “Salvation is found in no one
else, for there is no other name under heaven
given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts
4:12).
God has given us this salvation and eternal life
as a gift (Romans 6:23, again). As sinners, doing
anything good enough to earn or deserve this
gift is not even possible. As a gift, the price has
already been paid for by the Giver, all you can
do is accept it.
To accept God’s gift of eternal life, the following
prayer is a guideline to help you express your
desire to God:
Dear God,
Thank You for sending Your only Son for
me. I know that I am a sinner and that there
is nothing I can do to save myself from the
consequences of sin. I believe that it is only
through the sacrifice of Jesus that I am able to
have abundant life with You beginning now and
forever. I invite You to take Your place as Lord
of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen

Betrayed by a Friend

The Frenemy. She’s both friend and enemy. She’s
nice a lot of the time, but boy when she’s mean
she is oh so mean. But the real problem with the
frenemy isn’t how she makes you feel, but her
influence on your spirit. In whatever way she
takes your eyes off of God or causes you to sin,
she has drawn your spirit away from the pursuit
of holiness and onto the pursuit of acceptance.
In every situation you have to ask yourself, “Am
I saying this now to win the approval of people or
God? Am I trying to please people? If I were still
trying to please people, I would not be Christ’s
servant.” (Galatians 1:10 GWT)
You can’t go on being afraid of the one you love.
Something needs to be done and it needs to be
done now. That’s why you have to agree to be
honest with yourself, but most of all to be willing
to do what it takes spiritually, to improve the
situation.
Feelings can’t be trusted. But sometimes how
you feel about or around your friend can be a
signal that something may be going wrong. Real
friendship is a good thing. It should be a place of
safety that you can go, and a continual knowl-
edge that in this big world at least one person
always has your back. But sometimes friendship
can feel anything but good. So at what point do
you say enough? Take a look at this list to see if
you have a real frenemy:

1. You feel worse after talking
or being with her
2. She’s overly defensive
3. She’s jealous
4. She’s controlling
5. It’s all about her
6. She never forgives
7. She agrees with or encourages you to sin
8. She loves to talk about other people
9. She loves revenge
10. She loves this world
Okay, so what now? As a believer your reaction
to every human being on the planet is to be
the same, it is to be love. Love is a weird thing.
It seems like an emotion beyond your control.
But that isn’t true. Love is not just an emotion;
it’s an action. The reason I know is that it is
found in God’s Word. God calls us to “love our
enemies.” (Matt 5:44) Now how could he pos-
sible command you to feel ‘lovey dovey’ about
someone who hates you? Can you be made to
feel something? Of course not! You can’t do it.

Feelings can’t be commanded. So when God
commands love he isn’t commanding you to feel
anything but to do something. And love, as com-
manded by God, isn’t reserved just for friends,
but for Frenemies, as well as full-on enemies.
I believe that, in the life of a believer, there
should be three kinds of friends:
1. One who is more
spiritually mature than you.
2. One who is about as
spiritually mature as you.
3. And one who is less
spiritually mature than you.
This is the friend who maybe just
got saved, or who needs a lot of help
working on some issues. She isn’t as
wise as you and needs someone she
can go to when life gets confusing.
Depending on which type of friend you have, you
are going to have a different role to play. For my
friends who are less spiritually mature than me,
I don’t expect them to listen to me as much as I
listen to them. I don’t get mad when every time
they call it isn’t to find out how I am doing but to
talk about themselves. I’m not angry when they
get mad at me, or say something nasty, because I
know my role in the relationship and I am happy
to be the less needy one. With this friend I focus
on helping them to understand how God’s Word
relates to their lives.
When it comes to your Frenemy, the first thing
you have to consider is her spiritual maturity
level. Could some of the things that bother you
about her be signs of her spiritual immaturity?
If so, then what does this say about your role in
her life? When you look at friendship through
the light of spiritual roles, it becomes a lot easier
to handle difficult people. I pray that you, my
friend, will be a true friend to those in your life,
even your frenemies. And that you won’t let
anyone take your eyes off of your Savior, even in
the name of friendship.
