Ti grade 5

DIN

3.7165 - Ti 6AI 4V
AFNOR
General characteristics
Universal titanium alloy with very good mechanical properties up to 400C, widely used in aerospace, automotive and
structural medical implants. Because of its aluminum and vanadium content, this alloy belongs to a + b titanium
alloys. Therefore it is possible to obtain various and complex microstructures, depending on the working parameters.
After solution annealing, this alloy can be age hardened. It should be emphasized that fabrication operations
(annealing, descaling) may increase the impurity level unless particular care is taken. This effect is irrecoverable.
The quality ELI ("extra-low interstitial - grade 23) is used for surgical implants.
Special care is needed along the process in order to avoid hydrogen pick up.

Fabrication characteristics
Cold working is severely limited. Cold drawing is very difficult because of frequent seizing on the die. Oxidation of the surface is often required to
prevent seizing on drawing. Cold rolling is possible to a limited extent because of springback and cracking problems. Hot working ability is in turn
excellent either by forging or by rolling. Working conditions are beyond the scope of this data sheet because of the multiplicity and complexity of
resulting microstructures and properties. Please contact us for further information on this subject. Hot processing can be done in air, in argon after
careful purging of the recipient or under high vacuum. In case of air processing the surface oxidizes to a depth of 0.05 0.5 mm, depending on time
and temperature. The oxidized layer must be removed mechanically or chemically after treatment; therefore pieces should be designed accordingly.
The oxidized scale presents a very good protective layer preventing bulk oxidation. The oxidized layer provides a better protection than the use of
argon or high vacuum.
Welding, brazing and soldering
Titanium can be welded by the conventional techniques used with austenitic stainless steels. Nevertheless, the heat affected zone must be protected
by either argon, helium or a mixture because of the material's reactivity. Liquid argon is often used because of its purity. Its dew point must be below 60C. Gas flow must be carefully controlled to avoid turbulent flow. There are also glove boxes designed for the welding of titanium pieces. Welding
is processed in a protective atmosphere and the manipulation is made through gloves sealed to the box. Annealing should be performed after welding
in order to have the same mechanical properties in the heat affected zone and the bulk.
