Description

This course will discuss return to learn strategies to be utilized by a


school nurse. The presenters will discuss important concussion school
based management components, academic
adjustments/accommodations, and strategies to work with parents,
teachers and administrators to promote return to school, return to
learn, and active daily living for the concussed student.

Target Audience

The target audience for this course is School Nurses. Sports Medicine
Physicians, Primary Care Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Physician
Assistants, Clinical Psychologists, Neuropsychologists, other Registered
Nurses, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Athletic
Trainers are encouraged to attend to learn more about the
multidisciplinary approach to managing concussions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:

Identify at least two academic impacts a students concussion


can have on school performance and new learning.

Design educational practices that can reduce student


symptom severity and potentially promote faster recovery.

Restate the importance of understanding and utilizing


important education terms and their implications during
different phases of recovery.

workshop, you may reschedule to participate in another event of
equal or lesser value or substitute someone in your place, but you
cannot receive a refund. All cancellations and refund requests
must be submitted by the purchaser to lmPACT Applications, Inc.

Continuing Education Credits


Athletic Trainers

ImPACT Applications, Inc. (BOC AP# P3429) is approved


by the Board of Certification, Inc. to provide continuing
education to Athletic Trainers. This program is eligible
for a maximum of 1.50 Category A hours/CEUs. ATs
should claim only those hours actually spent in the
educational program.

Physical Therapists

At this time ImPACT is not able to offer pre-approved continuing


education credits to physical therapists for this course. You will
receive a certificate of attendance for each of our courses with
contact hours listed. Review your state laws to determine if this
training can be applied toward continuing education without
pre-approval.

Physicians

At this time, ImPACT is not able to offer AMA PRA Category 1


Credits. You will receive a certificate of attendance for each of our
courses with contact hours listed. Review your local, state, and
national Medical Society laws to determine if this training can be

Other Healthcare
Professions

At this time ImPACT is not able to offer continuing education


credits to occupational therapists, psychologists, registered
nurses, or other healthcare professionals. We are in the process
of applying to be able to offer credits to as many disciplines as
possible and hope to have the ability to offer credits at future
training events.

Karen McAvoy, PsyD is dually credentialed as a clinical and school


psychologist. After 20 years as a school psychologist in a large suburban
school district just south of Denver, Dr. McAvoy left the school district to write
mild/moderate/severe TBI policy for the Colorado Department of Education.
She is the author of REAP - a Community-Based Concussion Management
Protocol and is now the Director of Psychology for a concussion clinic within a
metropolitan Hospital for Children. Dr McAvoy is published on Return to
Learn and speaks nationally and internationally on the topic. She is a
frequent consultant to the Centers for Disease Control on mild Traumatic
Brain Injury and is currently co-authoring the Return to Learn consensus
paper with Brenda Eagan-Brown on behalf of the National Collaborative on
Childrens Brain Injury (NCCBI). In March 2016, Dr McAvoy was an invited
panel member of the Congressional TBI Taskforce on the subject of Return to
Learn. Dr McAvoy lives in Colorado with her family where she makes the
most of the 300+ days of sunshine per year.

Program Coordinator
BrainSTEPS
Pittsburgh, PA

Brenda Eagan Brown, MEd, CBIS is the statewide Program Coordinator for
Pennsylvanias Brain Injury School Re-Entry Consulting Program called
BrainSTEPS. She received her Masters Degree in the educational aspects of
pediatric traumatic brain injury from the George Washington University, where
she now serves as an adjunct professor in the graduate school. Brenda is
currently enrolled in a doctoral program at Johns Hopkins. She is a Certified Brain
Injury Specialist and serves on numerous national advisory boards. She is
published, is a legal expert consultant, regularly presents at the national and
international levels, and has received multiple state/national awards for her work
in brain injury. Currently, she serves as an Expert Reviewer for the Centers for
Disease Control (CDC) Report to Congress on Management of Traumatic Brain
Injury in Children and has also co-authored a CDC document on return to school.
She was chosen as an expert Return to Learn concussion presenter for the
Obama appointed Institute of Medicine/National Research Council committee.
Spearheading development and creation of PAs Return to Learn Concussion
Management Team Model, she has trained over 1,050+ school based teams in PA
to date. The Return to Learn Concussion Management Team model was featured
in the Wall Street Journal. Brenda co-leads the national Concussion Return to
Learn Consensus for NCCBI and serves as a national consultant for state
Departments of Education.
She and Dr. Karen McAvoy created a website focused on empowering educators:
www.getschooledonconcussions.com. Recently, Brenda and Karen were charged
with co-leading the first national Concussion Return to Learn Consensus paper
for the National Collaborative for Childrens Brain Injury (NCCBI). But, most
importantly, Brenda has a brother who sustained a severe traumatic brain injury
while they were teenagers, which is where her passion for helping families and
students began. She currently lives outside of Pittsburgh with her husband and
18 year old twins, who are both headed off to college in the Fall.
