major
threat
Multitasking drivers
endanger themselves,

ating back to the

days of the first
automobiles, drivers have always taken on a
degree of risk when getting
behind the wheel and hitting the open road. While
technology has done much
to mitigate that risk, its also
contributed to the growing
number of distractions drivers face on the road.

underreported,
yet significant
threat

Despite its trim lines and sleek exterior, the

F-PACE still comfortably fits five passengers in
a functional manner, he said. It looks assertive
yet not aggressive, Callum said. But its also
versatile and equipped with real-world answers
to everyday questions. The all-new F-PACE is
an all-weather Jaguar sports car, life-proofed for
five people and their belongings.

According to the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2012 more than
3,300 people were killed in
crashes involving a distracted
driver. Just a year earlier, 17
percent of crashes in which
someone was injured involved distracted driving.
Those figures are even
more disturbing when one
considers the problem of underreporting with regard to
distracted driving. The National Safety Council notes
that underreporting of mobile phone use leading to
car crashes makes the issue
of distracted driving appear
less substantial than it likely
is. Perhaps because they fear
potential citations or even
possible incarceration, many
drivers involved in crashes
do not admit to using mobile
phones while driving.
But a 2011 CDC study
found that distracted driving is a genuine threat. In the
study, survey participants
were asked how often they
had read or sent a text message or email while driving in the previous 30 days.
Nearly one-third of study
participants in the United
States admitted that they
had, and those figures were
similar in Portugal and Belgium. In addition, 69 percent
of U.S. drivers between the
ages of 18 and 64 reported
that they had talked on their
mobile phones while driving
in the past 30 days.
Combating distracted driving is not easy. As the use of
mobile devices grows, many
people are finding it increasingly difficult to put those devices down, even when they

lready one of the leaders in the luxury line of autos, Jaguar is looking
to expand its market with two new
products designed to entice a new segment
of buyers. The Jaguar 2017 XE and the Jaguar
F-PACE retain the same sleek lines and high
performance that traditionalists favor, but cater to a driver that may have never before considered the brand.
The XE launches Jaguar back into the compact sports sedan market for the first time since
the early 1990s, said Nathan Hoyt, Jaguar National Product Communications Manager. And
the F-PACE delivers Jaguars first sports utility
vehicle, he said. Its the first time in the 80-year
history of Jaguar that we have five vehicles in the
product line at the same time, he said. They do
offer new points of entry for the brand. And they
are both affordable.

jaguars interpretation of the
sports utility vehicle
Although the F-PACE represents a new venture for Jaguar, it still features everything buyers have come to expect from the brand, said
Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design. We designed the all-new F-PACE to be first and foremost a Jaguar, Callum said. Thats why it has
exciting proportions, a dynamic stance, pure
surfaces and a beautiful sensuality about it. Its
progressive, purposeful appearance has clearly
been influenced by the F-TYPE. Its an eye-

catching design, he said, that showcases what

Jaguar does so well.
Every Jaguar car should draw your eye
from 200 meters away and I believe the presence of the all-new F-PACE on the road is second to none in this class, Callum said. The
Lightweight Aluminum Architecture gave us
the design freedom to create a car with latent
poise a svelte car with attitude.

Indeed, the F-PACE is a

pleasant blend of sport-utility
vehicle with a luxury feel. It
has a 113-inch wheelbase, making access in and out of the rear
seats a comfortable experience.
And the wide seat base was designed to provide more backseat room, allowing three passengers to fit well.
Despite all that space, the
F-PACE is not a gas guzzler.
Instead, one-third of the vehicle
more than any other Jaguar
-- features a Jaguar-developed
aluminum alloy that is 75-percent recycled material and exceptionally lightweight. The
F-PACE sports utility vehicle
boasts strength through the use
of a monocoque technology
that supports loads through the
external frame.
It also features a composite tailgate, magnesium
cross-car beam and front-end
carrier to deliver top-notch
driving dynamics, said Mike
Cross, Jaguar Chief Engineer
of Vehicle Integrity.
We develop every Jaguar
vehicle to offer an unrivalled
combination of agility and responsiveness with exceptional
ride and refinement and the
all-new F-PACE is no exception, he said. Applying all of
the learning from the F-TYPE,
the steering reacts immediately,

ideal balance of precise handling and body control, making
the all-new F-Pace as rewarding to drive as it is comfortable
to to be driven in.

bringing back
the roar
Jaguars return to the compact sports sedan is marked by
three variations of the XE model: 20d, 25t and 35t, with the
main difference coming under
the hood.
The 35t will run off a
340-horsepower,
supercharged, 3.0-liter, V-6 engine
that scoots up to 60 MPH in 5.1
seconds with a top-end speed
of 155 MPH although Jaguar
cautions drivers to maintain
lawful speed limits.
The 25t features an efficient 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter, Gasoline Turbo Direct Injection engine.
And the 20d is powered by
a gas-saving 180-horsepower,
2.0-liter Ingenium diesel, turbocharged engine that also produces low-emissions.
Our mission was to create
an exciting and dynamic design clearly reflecting the XE
positioning as a serious driv-

ers car, Callum said. The

cab rearward proportions and
tight packaging achieve that
and give the XE the appearance
of movement even when it is
standing still. It bears a strong
family resemblance to the FTYPE and will stand apart in
the crowd.
Control and handling is a
priority in the XE series as it
features a double-wishbone
front suspension. And the aluminum front spindles that are
both light and stiff are forged
from cast blanks. The rear suspension is controlled through
an integral link system, all of
which creates lateral and longitudinal stiffness for uncommon
handling and a smooth ride,
said Dr. Mark White, Jaguar
Chief Technical Specialist.

strong and light

with safety
technology to boot
The XE is as strong and light
as it could possibly be thanks to
exhaustive analysis and gleaning the latest engineering techniques to bear on its design,
he said. It has been challenging to accomplish but the XE
structure is absolutely at the
cutting edge of what is achievable today.
The XE series will feature

All Surface Progress Control to

help drivers maintain vehicle
control under all driving conditions. The technological advance made possible through
the experience of Land Rover
in off-road traction systems,
works like a low-level cruise
control. Operating between 2
MPH and 19 MPH, the system
is designed to precisely control
brake and powertrain systems
to create optimum traction in
all road conditions.
Coupled with an optional
laser heads-up display featuring stereo camera technology,
the XE is one of the safest vehicles on the road. Sensors in
the system provide measurements of speed and distance of
objects ahead and can deliver
full braking to avoid or lessen
the impact of a collision. Displayed on the windshield, the
system also can recognize traffic signs and perform lane departure warnings.
Adjust suspension and music volume with comprehensive infotainment system
Both the XE and the F-PACE
are available with the innovative InControl Touch infotainment system that features an
8-inch capacitive touch screen,
Hoyt said. It includes Jaguars
latest navigation software that
is lightning quick. The stereo,
climate control and driving
dynamics like harder or softer
suspension are all controlled
through the system.
What distinguishes it is has
a 60-gigabyte, solid-state hard
drive, which is a fast processor, he said. It has more computing power than some personal tablets that are available
on the market today.

amily vacations provide

opportunities for parents
and their children to unwind and make memories that
last a lifetime. Such excursions
can be made even more memorable when taking the family pet.
Traveling with animals in tow
is not as simple as beckoning the
family pet to the car when its time
to hit the open road. The American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals notes that travel
can be stressful for both pet own-

ers and their pets. To help ease that

stress and ensure all members of
the family, including those covered in fur, have a great a time on
vacation, the ASPCA offers the following tips to pet owners taking
their animals on road trips.

update information
Check and update your pets collar. Even if pets are microchipped,
its important to make sure they
wear collars imprinted with their

owners names, phone numbers,

email addresses and any additional
relevant contact information. Make
sure the phone numbers listed on
pets collars are the numbers where
you can be reached while on vacation and not just a landline home
phone number.

prepare your pet

In the weeks before the trip, pet
owners should start to prepare
their pets for the trip by taking

them on short drives. Lengthen

each of these mini trips so you can
build up a travel tolerance in your
pet and acquaint the animal with
car travel before vacation begins.

get the gear

Purchase appropriate travel
gear well in advance. Some pet
owners cannot imagine making
long road trips with their pets
in crates. But crating pets during road trips is entirely possible

Motorcycle novices must prepare for road

eq u i p m e n t a n d t r a i n i n g c ru c i a l fo r s a f e r i d i n g

en and women who ride motorcycles often insist theres nothing

quite like riding. Riding a motorcycle not only can be exhilarating and provide a feeling unlike any other, but it also
requires patience and discipline for beginners and veteran riders alike.
Riding a motorcycle carries a certain stigma of being dangerous, but thats only the
case for inattentive riders who forget their
responsibilities while on the road. The following are some tips that beginners can put
to use when hitting the open road.

gear up and stay geared up

Beginners often dont have a problem
gearing up, as many are understandably
nervous and therefore less likely to leave
necessary equipment in the garage. Always

wear a helmet, motorcycle jacket, riding

gloves, riding boots and motorcycle pants
when riding. Many riders fall into the trap
of wearing less gear once they become more
acclimated to their bike. But gear should be
worn whether you have been riding for 50
days or 50 years.

prepare, prepare, prepare

Theres no such thing as too much preparation when riding a motorcycle. Motorcycle
training guides are valuable tools of information for beginners. These instructional
videos or reading materials provide insight
into all aspects of riding a motorcycle, and
no beginner should get on a motorcycle
without first watching or reading a motorcycle training guide.

ATVs with engine sizes of greater than 90cc are recommended for use only by those age 16 and older. YAMAHA recommends that
all ATV riders take an approved training course. For safety and training information, see your dealer or call the ATV Safety Institute at
1-800-887-2887. ATVs can be hazardous to operate. For your safety: Always avoid paved surfaces. Never ride on public roads. Always
wear a helmet, eye protection and protective clothing. Never carry passengers. Never engage in stunt riding. Riding and alcohol/drugs
dont mix. Avoid excessive speed. And be particularly careful on difficult terrain.
Professional driver on closed course. Always protect the environment and wear your seat belt, helmet, eye protection and protective
clothing. Read the owners manual and product warning labels before operation. Model shown with optional accessories. Vehicle
specifications subject to change.

practice away from

other motorists
Dont start riding on a freeway until you
have grown accustomed to riding the bike
at slow practice speeds youve honed away
from other motorists. Empty parking lots
make ideal training grounds. Once you feel
comfortable in the parking lot, gradually
move to roads without heavy traffic, such
as residential neighborhoods. Once youre
truly comfortable on the bike, then you can
hit the highway.

go to class
A motorcycle safety course might be a
requirement in some areas but not required
in others. Regardless of whether or not its
required, take the class anyway. Such classes

might cost a few hundred dollars, but their

value far exceeds that cost. A safety course
prepares riders for anything they might encounter on the road. Just be sure to enroll in
a class that teaches accident evasion.

get the right size

Some riders envision themselves at the
helm of a big hog, while others see themselves tooling down the highway on an
ultra-light bike. But dont go to extremes in
either direction, at least not with your first
motorcycle. A heavy bike might be more
stable, but its also harder to control. A lighter bike might feel easier to control, but its
best to wait until you have had a year or
two of experience before buying bikes often
referred to as crotch rockets, which are
sporty and fast.

pet trips: preparation

keeps animals safe
continued from page 2
without making pets uncomfortable.
The ASPCA advises purchasing crates
that are large enough to allow pets to
stand, sit, lie down and turn around.
Its also important to secure the crate so
it does not slide around in case of sudden stops or when driving on curvy
roads. Pet owners who dont want to
put their pets in crates should keep
pets harnessed in the back seat at all
times, never letting the animal hang its
head out the window while the car is
in motion.

pack for furry family

members too
Human beings tend to bring snacks
and beverages along on road trips, and
such items are necessary for pets, too.
Pack water, food and some snacks for
pets, but never feed them in a moving
car. Take some time to feed pets at rest
stops. The ASPCA advises feeding pets

bottled water to reduce the risk of stomach problems. In addition to food and
water, pack some toys to keep pets occupied during the trip. Such toys can
also calm animals anxiety by providing
them with something familiar.

do not leave pets alone

Leaving pets alone in a car is unsafe
no matter what the temperature is outside. Pets are susceptible to heatstroke
when left in hot cars and can freeze to
death when left in cars during winter.
When planning your road trip, confirm
that any hotels you plan to stay in accept pets.
Family vacations may not be complete without the family pets joining
in the fun. But its important for pet
owners to plan ahead when taking
their furry friends on vacation.

distracted: drivers
can miss half
of surroundings
continued from page 1
are behind the wheel of their automobiles. But there are some steps drivers
can take to improve their awareness on
the road.

reduce reliance on
hands-free devices
Though it might seem as though
hands-free devices are the ultimate
weapon against distracted driving, the
NSC reports that more than 30 studies
have shown that such devices do not
make drivers any safer. Thats because
drivers remain distracted by the conservations they have while using handsfree devices. Reports from the NSC,
Texas Transportation Institute and
AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety indicate that drivers talking on handheld
or hands-free devices can fail to see as
much as 50 percent of their surroundings. When driving, stick to driving so
you can focus all of your attention on
the road, where it belongs.

get educated
Another step drivers can take to improve their awareness on the road is to

educate themselves and their teenaged

drivers about the dangers of distracted
driving. A University of Utah study
found that drivers using mobile phones
had slower reaction times than drivers with a .08 blood alcohol content,
which is the legal intoxication limit in
many states. If more drivers realized
that speaking on their mobile phones
impairs their reaction time even more
than driving drunk, then perhaps more
people would put down their phones
and continue their conversations once
they reach their destinations.

address your
driving habits
Finally, drivers who recognize
their habits can take steps to prevent
those habits from putting them in
harms way. If you are never too far
away from your mobile phone and
unable to resist the urge to read and/
or answer a text message or email,
turn your phone off and put it in the
glove compartment before you hit the
road. Doing so might just save your
life and the lives of your passengers
and fellow motorists.
