The Institute

TheNorthEasternRegionalInstituteofScienceandTechnology(NERIST)wassetupbytheGovernment
ofIndia,initiallyasaprojectoftheNorthEasternCouncil,forprovidingasystemofeducationtocreate
technicalmanpoweratvariouslevelsforthedevelopmentoftheNorthEasternregionofthecountry.The
foundationstoneoftheInstitutewaslaidbylateGianiZailSingh,thethenPresidentofIndia,on4thMarch,
1984andthefirstbatchofstudentswasadmittedtotheBaseModuleinAugust,1986andsubsequentlyto
Diploma and Degree Module. By July, 2015, twenty three batches have completed their degrees in
Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics &
CommunicationEngineering,ElectricalEngineering,MechanicalEngineeringandForestry.Inadditionto
theundergraduateprogrammes,theInstitutealsooffersM.Sc.inPhysics,Chemistry,Mathematics&Forestry,
M.Tech.,M.B.A(FullTimeandPartTime)andPh.D.(FullTimeandPartTime)Programmes.
TheInstituteattainedthestatusofDeemedUniversityundersection3oftheUGCAct,1956,videNotification
No.F.9-15/2005-U.3,dated31stMay,2005byMinistryofHumanResourceDevelopment,Govt.ofIndia.
2. Location
ArunachalPradeshisthelandofexoticorchidsandlushgreenhills.TheInstituteislocatedinapicturesque
valleyatthefoothillsoftheEasternHimalayasandissituatedatNirjuliinthePapumParedistrictof
ArunachalPradesh,ontheNationalHighway415.Itisabout20kmfromItanagar,thecapitalcomplexof
ArunachalPradesh.Itprovidesanidealsettingforaseatofhigherandtechnicaleducationwithabackdrop
ofquietandpristinesurroundings.
Locatedatadistanceof400kmfromGuwahati,theInstitutecanbeaccessedbyrail,roadorair.Super
DeluxebusesfromGuwahatiareavailabledaily.TaxiescanalsobehiredatGuwahatiforcomingtothe
Institute.AnovernighttrainconnectsNaharlagunwhichisthenearestrailwaystationandisabout12km
fromNERIST.

Mission:
1. Creatinganicheinthefieldofscienceandtechnologyeducationandresearchthroughaninnovative
modularsystem.
2. Producinggloballycompetitivetechnicalandscientificmanpowerindifferentdisciplineswithhighethical
valuesandwithparticularreferencetotheNorthEasternregion.
3. Introducinginengineers/technologistandtraineesamind-setfullofcreativitytopursueexcellencewith
focusonstakeholders,accountability,environmentandpeople.
4. DevelopingcollaborationswithworldclassR&Dorganizations,industriesandeducationalinstitutions

Eligibility

AdmissiontoalltheprogrammesofM.Sc.,M.Tech,MBAandPh.D.(FT&PT)oftheInstituteisopento
allIndianNationals.NRI,foreignstudentsarealsoallowedfortheadmissionprovidedtheyfulfilleligibility
criteriaandobtainclearancefromGovt.ofIndia.AcandidateemployedinanyGovt./semiGovt.Department/
Organizationetc.mustencloseaNoObjectionCertificateasperformatinAnnexure IfromtheEmployer
statingthathe/shewillberelievedforthestudyduringtheperiodoftheprogramme
Candidates must possess the educational qualifications as stated below for applying to the programmes.
M.Sc. in Forestry:4yearBachelorofScienceinForestrywithaCGPA6.5ona10.00pointscaleor60%
marksinaggregate.5%marksrelaxationwillbegiventoSC/ST/PWDCategory.
M.Sc. in Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics: B.Sc.inPhysics/Chemistry/Mathematicswith55%marksin
aggregate(PassCourse)and50%marksinmajor/honourssubject.
M. Tech.: B. Tech. or equivalent degree with a CGPA 6.5 on a 10.00 point scale or 60% marks in
aggregateforGeneralCategorywithvalidGATEScore.5%marksrelaxationwillbegiventoSC/ST/
PWDcategoryCandidates.CandidateswithoutGATEscorewillalsobeconsidered,subjecttoavailability
ofseats.
MBA:BachelorDegreeinanydisciplineapprovedbyAllIndiaUniversity,with55%marksinaggregate
and50%forSC/STcategory.
Ph.D. (Full Time & Part Time):CandidateshavingMastersDegreeinEngineering/Technologywith
60%marksinaggregateorCGPA6.5ona10.00pointscaleand55%marksinaggregateinScience/
HumanitiesforGeneralcategory.5%marksrelaxationwillbegiventoSC/ST/PWDcategoryinboththe
cases.TheadmissiontothePh.D.programmewillbebasedonthebasisoftheirperformanceinthewritten
testand/orinterviewconductedbytheconcerneddepartment/centre.Applicants,whowishtopursue
Ph.D.whileinemployment/service,needtosubmitNOCfrom(AnnexureVI)theiremployeralongwith
theapplicationform.NET/GATEscoreisnotessential.However,thosewithNET(forJRF/GATE)will
beeligibleforscholarshipsubjecttoavailabilityoffundsanctionedbyGovt.ofIndia.The applicant who
wishes to do Ph.D. may contact the HOD of concerned department for confirming the availability of
seats and choosing of the specialized subjects and guides.

Ragging

AsperSupremeCourtsverdictRaggingisadisorderlyconduct,whetherbywordsspokenorwritten,or
byanactwhichhastheeffectofteasing,treatingorhandlingwithrudenessanystudent,indulginginrowdy
orundisciplinedactivitieswhichcauseorarelikelytocauseannoyance,hardshiporpsychologicalharm
ortoraisefearorapprehensionthereofinafresherorajuniorstudentandwhichhastheeffectofcausing
orgeneratingasenseofshameorembarrassmentsoastoadverselyaffectthepsycheofafresherora
juniorstudent.RaggingisbannedinNERISTandanyoneindulginginraggingduringtheentireperiodof

his/herstudyinNERISTislikelytobepunishedappropriatelywhichmayincludeexpulsionfromthe
Institute,suspensionfromtheInstituteorclassesforalimitedperiodorfinewithapublicapology.Asper
thedirectionofGovt.ofIndia,everystudentduringadmissioninthisInstitutehastosubmitanaffidavitto
thiseffect.TheformatofthesameisprovidedattheendofthisbrochureatAnnexureII&III.

Sponsored candidates are also eligible to apply for this Programme. Sponsoring Certificate from the
employerasperformatinAnnexureIVisrequiredstatingthatperiodofstudywillbetreatedasonduty
withusualsalary/allowancesandhe/shewillberelievedduringtheperiodofstudiesandallfeeswillbe
paidbytheorganization(sponsor).Self-sponsoredcandidateswithoutGATEscoremayalsobeconsidered
subjecttoavailabilityofseats.
(B) Sponsored Candidates (for Ph.D. Programme only)
Sponsored candidates are also eligible to apply for this Programme. Sponsoring Certificate from the
employerasperformatinAnnexureVisrequiredstatingthatperiodofstudywillbetreatedasonduty

8. Receipt of Application forms
The filled in application form, complete in all respects, along with the self-attested copies of following

Selection Procedure
Thenamesoftheshort-listedcandidateswillbedisplayedonInstitutesNoticeBoardandthesame
will be available at Institute Website (http:// www.nerist.ac.in). Admit Cards to the short listed
candidateswillbesentbypostandnoseparateletterwillbesentfortheWrittentest/orinterview.
Incompleteapplicationswillberejectedandnocommunicationwillbemadeinthisregard.Shortlistedcandidateshavetoappearforthewrittentestand/orinterviewasperdetailsinAdmitcards.
However, candidates for MBA will have to appear in written test, Group discussion/personal
interview.CAT/MATqualifiedcandidateswillbeexemptedfromthewrittentestonly.Selectionwill
bemadeonthebasisofmerit.Result of selected candidates will be displayed on Departmental
Notice Board and Institute Website (www.nerist.ac.in). No separate offer letter shall be issued
to the selected and wait listed candidates.

10. Admission
a)

TheselectedandwaitlistedcandidateswillberequiredtoreporttotheAcademicSectionofthe
Instituteonthespecifieddateforcounselling/admissionandRegistration.Counselling/admission of
selected candidates of PG and Ph.D. programme is on 25th July, 2016 and wait listed candidates
is on 26th July, 2016 only. Further, admitted candidates of PG and Ph.D. programme have to
register on 27th July, 2016 fixed for one day only failing which their admission shall stand
terminated.

b)

Candidatesmust produceallthecertificatesandmarksheetsofallexaminationsin original for


verificationatthetimeofcounselling/admission.Admissionwillbeallowedsubjecttoproduction
ofmedicalfitnesscertificateandverificationofallcertificatesandmarksheets.Iftheresultofthe
qualifyingexaminationsoftheselectedcandidateisnotdeclaredbeforeadmission,he/shemaybe
allowedforprovisionaladmission,providedthatthecandidatesubmitsexaminationcompletion
certificatefromthePrincipal/HeadoftheInstitutionandadmitcardofthesaidexamination.Acandidate
hastogiveanundertakingintheprescribedformatforsubmissionoftherequisitedocumentsby30th
September,2016,failingwhichhe/shewillnotbeeligibleforregistrationinthisInstitute.If the
candidate fails to submit the requisite qualifying documents within specified time period, his/her
registration from the 2nd semester will be discontinued/terminated.

11. Hostel facility


TheInstituteisfullyresidential.Thereareseparatehostelsforboysandgirlsinthecampusofthe
Institute with all facilities. There are seven boys and two girls hostel in the campus. Hostel
accommodationtofemalestudentsofPostGraduateandPh.D.Programmes(FT)willbeprovided
subjecttotheavailabilityofseats.
11.1 Ban on Picnic
Based on the past experiences of loss of precious lives of students while organizing picnic on
rivers side, the Academic Council of the Institutes has resolved in its 13th meeting that such
picnics are banned with immediate effect.
12. Scholarship/Stipend
TheGATEqualifiedcandidatesadmittedtotheAICTEapprovedcoursesareeligibleforScholarship/
StipendandbookgrantsbytheAICTE,subjecttoavailabilityofgrant,receivedfromtheAICTE.
ThereisopportunityofTEQIP(TechnicalEducationQualityImprovementProgramme)scholarship
andNEQIPintheInstituteforM.Tech.students.However,irrespectiveofthesourceofscholarship/
stipend,astudent mustattendatleast75%ofclassesineachcourseinwhichhe/shehasregistered,
failingwhichthescholarship/stipendmaybeterminated.

TheGymkhanaisthecentreofco-curricularactivitiesofthestudentsofNERIST.Itprovidesfacilities
tothemfortheirall-rounddevelopmentinthefieldofsports,culture,hobbiesandcreativity.Allthe
activitiesofstudents areconductedunderthecontrolandguidanceoftheChairmanandaVice(7)

Introduction and Brief profile of the Department

AgriculturalEngineeringdealswiththeuseofengineeringtoolsandpracticestosolvecropproduction,
handlingandprocessingproblemsforfoodandfiberalongwiththeproductiontoconsumptionchain.Itincludes
theapplicationofscientificknowledgeindiverseandmulti-disciplinaryactivitiesfortheoveralldevelopmentof
thenationandfarmingcommunityunderprotectiveenvironment.
TheAgriculturalEngineeringDepartmentcameintoexistencesinceinceptionoftheInstitute.Thedepartment
alsofollowsatwoyearsmodularpatternofeducationasadoptedbytheInstituteviz.Basemodule,Diploma
moduleandDegreemodule.
AgriculturalEngineeringisaninterdisciplinaryprogramme,comprisingofspecializationlikeSoilandWater
conservationEngineering,Irrigation&DrainageEngineering,FarmMachineryEngineering,FarmPower

andameritoriousbreedofUGandDiplomastudents.
ThedepartmenthascompletedanumberofsponsoredprojectsofMHRD,DSTandDOEofGovt.ofIndia.It
hasorganizedinternationalandnationalconferences,andISTE,TEQIPsponsoredshort-termcourseskeeping
inviewoftherecenttrendsintechnology.Studentsanddedicatedfacultymembersofthedepartmenthave

andsmokemeteretc.AseparateBiodiesellabhasbeeninstalledanddevelopedintheDepartment.TheBiodiesel
labiswellequippedwithIntegratedBiodieselReactorSystemconsistingofmechanicaloilexpeller,decorticator,
babybathboilerandoilfilteringunit.Theotherlaboratoriesequipmentsuchasmagneticoilstirrer,1-litrecapacity
biodieselreactor,Gaschromatograph(GC),bombcalorimeter,Centrifuge,Viscometer,flashandfirepoint
apparatus,cloud,pourpointapparatus,andSetavisviscometeretc.areavailable.ThestudentsofUG/PG/PhD

andmajorrolenow-a-days.ThelabcanbeusedforUG/PG/PhDscholarworksintheMechanicalEngineering
Department.TheComputerandCFDlabarewellequippedwithgoodnumberofpentium-IVs,peripherals,
printersandsoftwares.
CADDlaboratoryisundergoingdevelopmentwiththeinitiativeofMr.S.Mahto.Twonewsoftware,onebeing
PRO-EandanotherbeingANSYS,areprocuredtoprovidehugeboosttotheCADD/CAMlaboratoryduring
thisyear.Dr.M.Chandrasekaranasin-chargeoffluidpowercontrollaboratoryinitiatedtheprocurementof

TheDepartmentofForestryhasbeenthepioneercentreofteachingandresearchinforestryinnortheastregion
sinceinceptionofNorthEasternRegionalInstituteofScienceandTechnology(NERIST),ArunachalPradesh.
Montagenatureofedapho-climaticconditionshasresultedinenormousvariationinflora/faunacompositionof
thenortheastregion.Therichbiodiversityoftheregioncangenerateeconomicvalueintermsofextractable
plantproducts,compounds,genesandspecies.Inviewofincreasingbioticactivitiesintheregionandthe
upcomingpatentingregimes,thereisaneedforproperevaluation,characterization,documentationandconservation

ThedepartmentofMathematicscameintoexistenceasafull-fledgeddepartmentin1993.Earlier,itwasa
partofthePhysicalScienceGroupsincetheinceptionoftheInstitutein1986.Thedepartmenthashighly
qualifiedfacultymemberswithawidevarietyofspecializationswithamixofbothPure&Applied

1.Introduction and a brief profile of the Department:
Engineeringandtechnologieshavebecomeoneofthepredominantforcesinshapingourvisionofrealityinthe
contemporaryworld.Andthedomainofhumanisticlearningenablesafuturetechnocrattosustaintheresilienceof
humanspiritinallspheresoflife.ThedepartmentofHumanitiesandSocialSciences(HSS)ofNERISTfulfillsthis
visionofprojectingahumancontentandconsciousnessrequiredfortheexpansionoftechnologicalandscientific
knowledgebysynthesizingthesciencesandtechnologieswithsocialsciencesandhumanities.CoupledwithForestry,
theHumanitiesandSocialScienceswasinitiallytaggedwiththeAppliedSciencesgroupofNERIST.However,
since1993,ithasbeenfunctioningasanindependentdeapertmentofferingcoursesinEnglish,Economics,
Sociology,PsychologyandManagement.Thedepartmenthasearnedadistinctivenameforitself,primarilydue
tothewide-rangingexperienceofthemembersofitsfacultyandtheapplicationofinnovativeteachingmethods,
keepingintunewiththeemergingdevelopmentsintheirrespectivefieldsofexpertise.Withtheintroductionofthe
