A Critical Review of Andrew Edkin, Joana Geraldi, Peter Morris and Alan Smith (2013) :

Exploring the front-end of project management, Engineering Project Organization Journal, 3:2,
71-85

Using the research method of interview with the senior project management
representatives from some organization experienced in managing projects, the authors; Andrew
Edkin, Joana Geraldi, Peter Morris and Alan Smith (2013), were conducted a study on the
influenced of front-end of management on the projects development in their journal of
Exploring the Front-End of Project Management. The research is about the early stage of
project and their management that may lead towards the result of the development. Their
finding shows that the project management could have different aspects from the normal project
management.
In the journal, the authors believed that the front-end project management are often
ignored by the official project management guidance. The project management are commonly
known as the action to accomplishing an undertaking on time, in budget, to scope. However,
according to the Project Management Institute, the project management can be define as the
application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques towards the activities in order to achieve
the project requirements. The operations of the project management must be guided using
these five disciplines group which are initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling
and closing. The front-end of project management is include in the initiating, planning and
executing group as it is the beginning part of the projects development. By referring to the
journal, the authors state that the front-end of project management must be applied or practiced
for every project planning. It is important to have the proper planning before develop any project
as well as to give the best impression before proceed the project. The project that is well
managed, therefore prima facie, would be potentially useful for the future result. Instead, the
front-end of project management that is poorly understood will lead to the failure of the project in
the future.
In summary, this research is well explained about the front-end of project management
as it is proposed the practice of the beginning strategy for the projects development. However,
better measures must be develop and larger sample must be used to improve the
understanding about the benefits of the practices. Despite having some deficiencies in

methodology, the research has provided some insight about the front-end of project
management in order to have the bigger successful project in the future.
