Industry Demonstrations in Food Technology

The Food Technology Department has recently welcomed visitors from the food industry into school to
demonstrate their cooking skills to our students.
7A2 thoroughly enjoyed watching a chef from Manchester University prepare and section a whole chicken
(not for the squeamish!) and cook a chicken casserole. The students then had the pleasure of sampling
the casserole, which was delicious.

9B1 gained inspiration for their multi-cultural meal design task whilst watching a member of Sainsbury’s
‘Try Team’ prepare and cook a selection of dishes. Recipes included cheese quesadillas, chicken and
banana curry, exotic fruit salad and chocolate brownies. Again, the favourite part of the demonstration
was the tasting!

Kids Corner Mrs Ainsworth’s Famous Hazelnut Meringue

Joke of the Week ☺

Why was the broom late?
It over swept!
Ingredients
Puzzle of the Week 6 egg whites For filling:
75g caster sugar 300ml whipping cream
1tsp white wine vinegar 225g raspberries
Maze Muddle No. 01 – The Picnic 1 tsp cornflour
175 chopped hazelnuts

Method

1. Pre-heat the oven to 150ºC/Gas 2. Draw two circles, one

with a 25cm diameter and one with a 28cm diameter, on
separate sheets of silicone paper.

2. To make the meringues, whisk the egg whites in a large bowl

until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, a teaspoon at a time.

3. Mix the vinegar and corn flour to a smooth paste, then fold
the mixture into the meringue with 150g of the hazelnuts.

4. Divide the mixture in half and spread it onto the two silicone

6. Whisk the cream until soft peaks form, then fold in the
raspberries. Spread the filling on the larger meringue and put
the smaller meringue, right side up, on top. Cover and chill until

CCF NEWS
April 2010
Congratulations to CSM Warren Moore, who is the first cadet to have
earned a BTEC award in Public Services, which was introduced by the
CCF last September. Warren was actually awarded a distinction grade
with a star, which is the equivalent to four GCSE’s at A*! Warren had to
complete an approved programme which demonstrated a wide range of
skills as an NCO and by completing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh.
Warren is also the first student at WHGS to have acquired a BTEC
award. We hope to have another 9 students complete their BTEC by
the end of term.

YEAR 5 TRIP TO LLANDUDNO

On Thursday 15th April, Year 5 went to Llandudno with Mrs Schouten, Mr Veevers,
Miss Lee and Ms Davies. The visit began with the children walking along the sea front
and down the pier. Then Year 5 boarded the Great Orme Tram to take them to the
Great Orme, where they had a picnic. After lunch they started a very long walk back to
the minibuses. By the time Year 5 reached the minibuses they were exhausted but they
did have a wonderful day!

YEAR 8 RUGBY TRIP TO SALE SHARKS

Mr Harrison and the school rewarded the Year 8 Rugby Squad with a fun night out to watch
Sale Sharks at Edgeley Park versus the Newcastle Falcons. The trip was organised by Mr
Harrison, for the Year 8 squad’s commitment to practices and games. Out of a team of 20,
there were never less than 16 students available. It was a trip that Sharky, Sale Sharks’
mascot, will never forget!

STUDY LEAVE INFORMATION
Study leave for Year 11 & 12 students starts on Monday, 17th May, 2010. Study leave commences

On Friday 23rd April, seven members of Year 8 went to Old Trafford to find out about the Go4SET
Project. This is a challenge to pupils in schools to work with an industrial mentor to solve a real
problem to do with conservation of energy or water in their school. WHGS will be working on this
project in school and after school hours for the next ten weeks. The prize is a CREST Silver Award
for all the pupils and an award to the school which produces the best project. The aim is to
promote science and engineering as a career and to enthuse pupils about working together to
solve a problem. The pupils who attended were; Ali Derregia, Gurdas Singh, Kira Glenn, Bisi
Adeniji, Louis Registe, Sufyaan Afzal and Angus Newman. They are pictured outside Old Trafford
(with Sir Matt looking on) and working out their first problem of the day. They narrowly missed
winning the tallest tower challenge and succeeded in completing their building in record time.
The team is looking forward to starting the real project this week.

Facebook, Bebo and other social networking sites can be great fun to use.
We do however want all of our pupils to be safe and would like to remind
everyone to take a look at www.thinkuknow.co.uk and www.ceop.police.uk to
make sure you’re safe.
The Nursery Class has recently been reading the story of 'The Very Hungry
Caterpillar'. With help from their teachers, the children have changed their role
play area into a magical forest! They have had lots of fun dressing up as
caterpillars and butterflies, and going on a nature trail in their own forest.
