The lesser or 2 evils?????

Rapid rise of use of drones- Ability to be operated remotely at

great distances from across the continents
Can loiter over areas for quite long, looking for suspicious
behavior, looking for targets etc.
Problem: unmanned systems make it easier to resort to lethal
military force a lot easier- too easy. Playstation mentality. Lowers
the threshold of whats actually happening. Rather than seeing
flesh and blood, you see pixels on the screen.
Reality is that there is evidence of this playstation mentality.
Drones give political leaders bias/propensity towards kinetic
attack. In modern times theres a real political cost to launching
overseas military intervention. Grieving parents awaiting
bodybags/coffins- real restraint on political leaders, so theyd
rather try to use lethal military force rather than diplomatic long
term solutions.
Each time a crisis blows up, there will be more pressure to
intervene, to send drones, beause there is no perceived cost in
doing so.
Drones lower the cost of engaging in lethal military action.
Musnt be fooled by Hollywood idea of pinpoint precision air
strikes. There is no such thing. Precision weaponry doesnt exist.
Of course weapons are much precise now than at ww2, but the
idea that we have that drone warfare can take out a particular
individual with no collateral damage is nonsense. Air strikes,
blast radiuses, weather etc..all affect the precision. THINK
AGAIN.
Ethical and effective because there are no alternatives? Its the
only game in town? If you have a hammer, every problem looks
like a nail. The solution to every problem is a drone strike.
<<<<THIS IS THE PROBLEM.
Missile strike, mass bombing would be worse, ground troop
invasion would be worse. If you can think of a worse option,
therefore anything you want to do can be justified.
Involves the maintenance of a secret death list, unaccountability,
lack of transparency etc.
Involves an expansion of the target- preachers, propagandists,
recruiters,
Drone warfare involves covert activity in territories which are not
defined as a theatre of operations. Expands the area operations.
Those who participate are CIA operatives, not subject to military
ethics.

When you acknowledge that drone warfare is legitimate for

yourself, you have to accept that it would be legitimate in the
hands of your opponents.
Imagine a world in which not only our adversaries, but also
countries which are not presently our adversaries. We are
considering a general situation in which every government will
maintain a secret death list, every government will use this
technology to take out those who are considered enemies.
Imagine the tables being turned, and these methods being used
against you. Pulling back from our anxieties-imagine a world of
death lists and death squads.

Is it effective for the US, the people of Pakistan? There is no

evidence that drone warfare is effective for people who live in
the countries where drone strikes take place.

Threat of terrorism. Terrorism is not abstract its a human rights

violation. Its REALITY in Pakistan. Its only talked about in the US,
but it is actually happening in other contries. More the 35000
people have died due to terrorism.

Boston is important to US. Karachi is important to Pakistan. They

are the same, why is Boston seen as more important? Blew up a
mosque in Pakistan. Doomsday.

Is drone warfare effective for reducing terrorism for the people of

Pakistan? Terrorism has not decreased at all, some say it has
increased, but this cannot be proven.

Terrorists move out of outlying regions and into the cities,

because of drone strikes, because precision warfare doesnt work
in these cities.

Drone warfare makes it worse for these countries, Pakistan and

Yemen, in the long term. if we conduct enough drone strikes,
well take out enough leaders, we will no longer face a threat in
the US <this is wrong. We have to gauge effectiveness by what
happens in that country-ineffective in terms of stability.

Drone warfare is about secrecy.

If you are a citizen of Pakistan and see drone strikes continuing

to occur, what faith can you have in your government? What
democracy? How can you believe in this democracy. How is US

building up and sustaining military power in these countries by

using drones? No democracy at all

CIA-poor accountability. Controls drone strikes.

Whats so great about this technology. Sure its a huge advance

in terms of precision. Hypothetically. But we have to see what
happens.we havent seen drone warfare be effective in terms
of the livelihoods of those people living in Pakistan etc.
