Garden party a chance for home viewing

Roseville Arts’ 10th annual Art
in the Garden Home and Gar-
den Tour has you covered.
While impressive artwork
takes center stage, it’s really the
beautiful homes and gardens
that steal the show.
“It’s almost like a garden par-
ty,” said Gene Marcucci Bell,
vice president of Roseville Arts,
and a chairperson for the
event. “The tour is such a
pleasant event for the commu-
nity.”
Ionic columns and ancient
Greek touches frame one Los
Lagos home that will house a
multitude of artists on May 1.
Stunning landscapes — both
painterly and in glowing 3-D
reality — will be the corner-
stone of a day filled with fun in
the glorious Granite Bay sun.
Vibrant, volcano granite atop
rich, maple flooring is a perfect
backdrop for acrylics, oils and
pastels in the 6,000-square-
foot home.
“The Realtor brought us over
here, and my husband just fell
in love with the place — espe-
cially the yard,” said home-
owner Carol Menasco.
Tour attendees are sure to
agree. The tour is always a
popular draw for garden clubs
throughout the region,
explained Marcucci Bell.
“We have people coming
from as far away as Lodi — the
groups rent busses,” she said.
“We’ve also had interior
designers bring people on the
tour for design ideas.”
Last year the tour raised
approximately $18,000 for
Roseville Arts and this year the
group hopes to almost double
that number.
“We’re hoping to sell a lot of
tickets,” Marcucci Bell said.
“We have different things we’re
doing this year, including more
raffle prizes.”
Prizes like a beautiful potting
bench from Smith and
Hawken, and various garden
art and statuary are sure to be a
hit with garden enthusiasts.
“Every year we raffle a beau-
tiful flower arrangement —
everyone loves that,” Marcucci
Bell said.

“We really try to showcase
homes that are various styles,
but that are still within a 10-
minute drive from one anoth-
er,” Marcucci Bell said.
Judy Yemma describes her

“I love the wine country, and
I love a room that looks com-
fortable and inviting,” she said.
And Yemma is inviting tour
visitors into her home and gar-
den to showcase artworks that
include her own photography,
as well as other notable pho-
tographers whose work she
admires.

Yemma obtained an art degree
from San Francisco State Uni-
versity, and has won many
awards, including first place in
KVIE’s juried art auction in the
photography division.
Photographs of hydrangeas
and other flowers dot the walls
and serve as beautiful exam-
ples of Yemma’s use of alterna-
tive, historical processing.
“I like to put my own twist on
things,” Yemma said. “I create a
montage of many images that I
re-assemble to represent my
version of the whole image.”
She describes the process as
a marriage of old and new.
“All the photographers that
will be here use unique, unusu-

hether you’re dreaming of building a

In a green home, attention is given to energy
efficiency and water and resource conserva-
tion. The use of sustainable or recycled prod-
ucts is expected.
“Building green doesn’t mean just meeting

Susan Prang, a certified green-building profes-

Dave Mullen has been work-
ing with trees and plants for
more than two decades. As a
certified arborist, he’s an
expert in the field.
In 1988, he and his wife Sun-
ny started a tree company
servicing both Placer and
Sacramento counties.
Golden State Tree Care, Inc.
services include pruning, tree
removal, lot clearing, planting
trees, shrub care and much
more. Rain or shine, Dave said
it’s a great job and something
he really enjoys.
“The good thing about doing
tree work is you’re out there
working with nature,” Mullen
said. “The only argument we
get into is with the occasional
squirrel.”
With Arbor Day just around
the corner on April 27, Mullen
answered a few questions
about trees.
1. What types of trees do you
recommend for this area?
The Orientals and Japanese
maples are popular and fun to
prune. Also, the flowering trees
such as the ornamental pear
trees and purple lead plum are
good. Magnolias have a pretty
flower and good trees and
since the oaks are native, they
are great trees for this area.
2. What is the best way to
take care of a tree?
You need to emulate nature.

For the native oak trees you
can use wood chips around the
tree. This helps insulate the soil
and maintain soil moisture.
For the oriental pear tree, you
need to prune every couple
years.
3. When is the best time of
year to plant a tree?
I like to plant in the fall. It
gives the tree the chance to
plant their roots. Fall is a great
time, too, because the temper-
ature is cool and the tree has
time to get established.
4. What is the best soil for
planting?
A lot of times when you’re
planting trees you want to
work with the existing soil. If
you bring in too much organic
mulch you can actually create
a soil disaster. The main thing
is you want your soil to drain
well so your roots can grow.
You can also add some fertiliz-
er.
5. How much yard is needed
for planting a tree?
It depends on the kind of
tree you are trying to plant.
Oftentimes we come to a
home 10 years after a tree was
planted because it was a poor
selection for the area so the
tree isn’t doing as well as it
should. I recommend doing
the research and finding out
how much area to have to work
with. Then find a tree that fits
that area.
6. If you already have a tree,
how do you keep it healthy?
Proper maintenance, prun-
ing and fertilization will keep it
healthy.
7. What are signs that the
tree might be sick?
Off-colored leaves means it’s
lacking specific nutrients. It
could mean the roots haven’t
developed. Most of the time it’s
too much water or not enough
water. Insects are a secondary
problem for the tree, meaning
the bugs move in when the tree
is already weak.
8. When is a good time to
prune?
Pruning can be done
throughout the year depend-
ing on the type of tree that

fruit trees are pruned when the
tree is dormant.
9. What is the tallest tree in
our area?
Redwood trees are the
tallest. They are not native to
the area but a lot of people
have planted them. They are
beautiful, but although they
can live hundreds of years in
their natural environment, in
this area they can outgrow
their environment in 20-30
years if the area isn’t large
enough to support the tree.
10. Overall best tree to plant?
The native oak trees are easy
to maintain and require little

Consignment shops are the ultimate recycle
‘Formerly-owned’ and
‘gently-used’ items
gain in popularity

ometimes you have to
S spend a lot of green to be a
little green, but at consign-
ment stores you can get a lot
for just a little.
Consignment stores allow
you to be a good steward of
resources and satisfy your
shopping urge at the same
time. These businesses are
usually locally owned and offer
quality, pre-owned, name
brand items at a fraction of
their original price.
Owners of a local consign-
ment clothing boutique and a
consignment furniture store,
both located on Douglas
Boulevard, say business is up
because of a tough economy
and a desire by customers to
recycle and re-use.
In January, Trish Beverly
added consignment clothing at
Friday Nite Boutique, her
Granite Bay women’s clothing
shop. She said the economy
led her to include “formerly
owned” items along with new
clothes. She says it’s a 50-50
mix of new and old.
Beverly says many of her
fashionable consignment
items carry name brands and
their original tags. The shop
owner says her stock appeals to
women and teens.
“There aren’t many stores
where mothers and daughters
can shop together and each
find something they like at a
great price,” Beverly says.
This past October, Becky
Rose opened Consign & Design
Furniture in Roseville, where
“gently used” newer dining, liv-
ing, family and bedroom furni-
ture is sold.
“The business has been very
well received. People are excit-
ed because it’s something dif-
ferent,” Rose says.
Both women say they have
to be very selective about what
they choose to consign.
Rose says being selective
helps “keep a certain vibe” in
the store. Those interested in
consigning e-mail photos to
her, or for numerous items, she
makes house calls to preview
the furniture.
Friday Nite carries formal
dresses, many of which are
“one-of-a-kind.” Recently,
