SUMMARY

The aim of this experiment is to understand and investigate tensile test and stress-strain
behaviour of metal bars. This is done via achieving an important objective. The objective
is to perform tensile test on two or more circular cross-section metals samples. The two
metals used in this experiment are a steel bar and aluminium bar. This is to explore their
respective stress-strain behaviour and relationship.
The equipment used in this experiment to conduct the tensile test is a Tinius Oslen
tensile machine, a digital vernier calliper and computer. This equipment will enable the
investigator to achieve the main aim and purpose of this experiment. The methodology
used in this experiment is to carry out a simple tensile test using a tensile machine.
The results obtained from the experiment shows that steel will show to have a higher
tensile strength when compared with the aluminium. The results will also show that the
steel will have a higher young modulus value when compared with the aluminium. This is
in lieu with known general knowledge, which states that still is far more firm and stiffer
when compared with the aluminium.
In conclusion, the major findings of this experiment are elucidated, in order to provide
recommendations. The values obtained are checked to consider if the results converged
with published literature and known publications. All discrepancies are investigated and
discussed. This section of the report contains further recommendations relating to
improvements on this experiment and ways to mitigate any risks involved.

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1.

This experimental study looks into and investigates the stress- strain
relationship using two metals, one steel bad and another aluminium bar.
This is in order to understand their behaviour and conduct a tensile test.

1.2.

Tensile test is used in order to understand how different materials respond

to different forces, and when they are put through a situation and
conditions. It is widely used by quality control departments in all
organisations dealing with metals. This is in order to investigate the metals
behaviour and characteristics.

1.3.

There are many uses for such test as it assists in ensuring that the
qualities of products are up to the standard. For instance, some machinery
such as bulldozer require to be made from steel and iron in order to ensure
their job is carried out in the most effective and efficient way required.
Therefore, it requires such tests to confirm it is up to the required
standard.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE
2.2.

The experimental procedure are listed below

A) The first step is to measure the diameter of the metal bar and its
length.
B) The specimen is placed into the grips of the tensile test machine.
C) Slack is taken up by applying a small load onto the test specimen
D) The load is applied and gradually increased with care and with the
extension of the metal specimen. This specimen is test until there is
deformation.
E) All data is collected and recorded by the computer.
F) The last step is to measure the length of the broken specimens.

CALCULATIONS AND RESULTS

This section of the report will show all the calculations used in this report
and all data collected during the experimental procedure. This section
covers all needed data and gives a preliminary explanation of the data
obtained.

ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This part of the experimental report covers the main data obtained during
the experiment. The data assist in ensuring that any major findings are
explored and further investigated. The results obtained from experimental
data are compared with theoretical hypothesis, in order to assess the
differences and similarities. This section assists in deriving clear
conclusions and recommendations that are discussed in conclusion section
of this report.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This part of the report covers the all major findings derived from the
experiment and all main points discussed in the discussion section. This
part concerns on finding the major conclusions, as well as commenting on
these major findings. This section includes recommendation on the subject
and how to improve the experimental lab. This section also includes any
risks involved in the experiment and how to mitigate such risks.
