Selection logic architecture

As a general rule, if a signal is out of configured range, an alarm shall be generated in the
control system.

When two or more measurements are available for the same process value, the value used
for interlocking will depend on the selected logic architecture.

In a DUAL SELECT logic architecture, two measures are available, if both are healthy the
average of the two measurements is used. In case of bad quality of one of the
measurements, automatic change-over to the healthy measurement takes place and an
alarm is generated.

In a MEDIAN SELECT logic architecture, three measures are available if all of them are
healthy the average of the three measurements is used. In case of bad quality of one of the
measurements, automatic change-over to the other healthy measurements takes place and
an alarm is generated.

The selected logic architecture of each instrument has been identified in the previous table
(see section 2.5.1).

2.5.3.

Bad quality concept

In case of bad quality of one of the redundant measurements, automatic change-over to

the healthy measurement will take place and an alarm will be generated. Bad quality
means that the signal is out of range < 4 or > 20 mA.

2.6.2.

Drivers/Actuators Fault Tolerance

When redundant actuators are available, at least one of the followings strategies shall be
configured:

Automatic pump selection

If there is a fault in one of the selected pumps which are in operation, the control system
will start automatically another pump in order to keep the required demand of pumps. The
required demand could be one of two pumps running. If it is not possible to keep the
required demand, the control system will generate an alarm.

Maximum waiting time

When it is required to start an actuator or to change its position, the control system shall
monitor the maximum admitted time to finish its maneuver. If this time is exceeded, the
control system will generate an alarm.

- Drain pumps expected starting time is 15 seconds (to be confirmed)

Fail safe position

It will be considered the Fail Safe Position the one that the device will go to in case of
control signal or air supply failure.

The fail safe position of each actuator has been identified in the previous table (see 2.6.1).

Step 02: ST Area Atmospheric drain tank drain valves (A115-MAL20-AA081 & 082) and
2

attemperation valve (A115-MAL20-AA083) to AUTO MODE.

Step 03: High Energy Condensate recovery tank attemperation water valve (A115MAL30-AA101) and temperature valve (A115-MAL30-AA102) to AUTO MODE.
Step 04: Low Energy Condensate recovery tank attemperation water valve (A115MAL40-AA101), temperature valve (A115-MAL40-AA102) and drain pumps (A115MAL41-AP001 & A115-MAL42-AP001) to AUTO MODE.

3.4. NORMAL OPERATION

HRSG Area Atmospheric drain tank A115-MAL10-BB001

In normal operation, the on-off valve A115-MAL10-AA081 will control the temperature
inside the HRSG Area Atmospheric drain tank. When the temperature is higher than 356C
2

the valve will open to reduce the temperature inside the tank up to the value of 210C when
the valve will close. In this way, the temperature inside the tank will be controlled. In case
the temperature exceeds the value of 357C an alarm will be generated in DCS but if the
temperature is higher than 362C the valve will be forced to open in order to protect the
tank against high temperatures.

ST Area Atmospheric drain tank A115-MAL20-BB001

In normal operation, the on-off valve A115-MAL20-AA083 will control the temperature
inside the ST Area Atmospheric drain tank. When the temperature is higher than 356C the
valve will open to reduce the temperature inside the tank up to the value of 210C when the
2

valve will close. In this way, the temperature inside the tank will be controlled. In case the
temperature exceeds the value of 357C an alarm will be generated in DCS but if the
temperature is higher than 362C the valve will be forced to open in order to protect the
tank against high temperatures.

Similarly, the on-off valves A115-MAL20-AA081 and A115-MAL20-AA082 will control the
level inside the ST Area Atmospheric drain. When the level is higher than 35% these

valves will open to evacuate the water inside the tank up to the value of 20% when they will
close. In this way, the level inside the tank will be controlled. In case the level exceeds the
value of 5% an alarm will be generated in DCS but valves wont be forced to open. On the
contrary, these valves will be forced to close if the level in the high energy vacuum tank is
very high or if the level in the tank is very low.

It is important to note that this tank has an overflow line in order to evacuate the water to
the drain system if the valve doesnt open.

High Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank A115-MAL30-BB001

In a normal operation, the control valve A115-MAL30-AA101 will control the temperature
inside the High Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank introducing attemperation water
(through diffuser nozzles) from demin water system to reduce the temperature inside the
tank. In case of exceeding the temperature of 82C the valve will be forced to open.
2

The control valve A115-MAL30-AA102 will control the water temperature in the High
Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank, to avoid pumps cavitation, introducing cool water
from demin water system. In case of exceeding the temperature of 70C the valve will be
forced to open.

At the same time, High Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank level will be controlled by
selected pump (A115-MAL41-AP001 or A115-MAL42-AP001) which will start when the
level is higher than 44% to evacuate the water inside the tank up to the 20% level when the
pump will stop. In this way, the level inside the tank will be controlled. In case the level
exceeds the value of 46% an alarm will be generated in DCS, but if the level exceeds the
value of 56% the DCS will trip the ST.

Low Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank A115-MAL40-BB001

In a normal operation, the control valve A115-MAL40-AA101 will control the temperature
inside the Low Energy Condensate Recovery drain tank introducing attemperation water
(through diffuser nozzles) from demin water system to reduce the temperature inside the
tank. In case of exceeding the temperature of 82C the valve will be forced to open.

4.2. CONTROL DESCRIPTION

Once the HRSG System is in operation, the Master Sequence Following Controller
(M.S.F.C) will send an automatic command to Steam Turbine Vents and Drains Functional
Group (STDV GROUP) to set in AUTO MODE this system. The STVD GROUP will send
an automatic command to each pump, to each control valve and to each pneumatic on-off
valve. After being in AUTO MODE, drain pumps will start or stop according to process
conditions. Similarly pneumatic on-off valves will be open or close if required.

In AUTO MODE, on-off valves, control valves and pumps will operate as described in
section 3.4 NORMAL OPERATION.

On the contrary, during the shutdown sequence, the M.S.F.C will set the system in OFF
sending a command to the functional group (STVD GROUP) which will stop the pumps (if
running) and close all valves (if open). After that all devices will be set in MANUAL mode in
2

order to continue with the shutdown sequence.

See attached sketch for better understanding of above explanation.
