Common Core Standards:

Academic Content Standards describe the knowledge and skills that students should
attain - often called the "what" of "what students should know and be able to do." They
indicate the ways of thinking, working, communicating, reasoning and investigating,
and important and enduring ideas, concepts, issues, dilemmas and knowledge essential
to the discipline.
HSASSE.A.1

Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context.

a. Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients.
b. Interpret complicated expressions by viewing one or more of their parts as a single
entity. For example, interpret P(1+r)n as the product of P and a factor not depending
on P.

HSASSE.A.2

Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see x4 y4 as
(x2)2 (y2)2, thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (x2 y2)
(x2 + y2).

Write expressions in equivalent forms to solve problems

HSASSE.B.3

Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the
quantity represented by the expression.
a. Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
b. Complete the square in a quadratic expression to reveal the maximum or minimum value of
the function it defines.
c. Use the properties of exponents to transform expressions for exponential functions. For
example the expression 1.15t can be rewritten as (1.151/12)12t 1.01212t to reveal the
approximate equivalent monthly interest rate if the annual rate is 15%.

HSASSE.B.4

Derive the formula for the sum of a finite geometric series (when the common ratio is not 1), and
use the formula to solve problems. For example, calculate mortgage payments.

Lesson Summary:
This lesson is designed to allow students to gain knowledge in algebraic mathematics. Each students will be
have his/her own personal computer, where they will move at their own pace learning different mathematical
problems and equations. This is a strict math technology class. I, the instructor will be present in the class for
the whole period to help, but the computer will also have a help button where the problem will be broken down
and better explained with more examples.
Estimated Duration:
This lesson will take about 1 hour 50 minutes. I will be dividing the lesson into 3 days, with each class period
lasting, each class period lasting 50 mins.

Commentary: I plan to approach this lesson with an open mind. I think the challenge is going to be that this
class is strictly computers. There are no books or quizzes to take home. What will hook the students is the fact
that theyll be able to move at their own pace.

Instructional Procedures:
Day 1:
First 15 minutes students will create unique username and password to log onto their account daily.
25 minutes: I will explain to the students how the class works, whats expected out of them, and the basics on
how to use the computer. The students will take a brief tutorial on how to maneuver throughout the computer
for the remainder of the course, and then take a brief quiz pertaining to the tutorial.
10 minutes: I will explain to the students that although this is a computer course and youre allowed to move at
your own pace, all work should be completed by the deadline given.
As Im explaining how to move through the course the students will be at their desk on their computer
following along with me.

Day 2:
35 minutes: The students will have the opportunity to move forward through the chapter. It is expected the
students will get through chapter one today.

25: We will go over the work and any problems the students face I will address.
Day 3:
50 minutes: The students will be equipped with username and password and move throughout the course as
they want.

Pre-Assessment:
A pre-assessment quiz will be used determined where the student is academically.
Scoring Guidelines:
The scoring guideline for the pre-assessment will be based upon the number of correct answers the
students get. There will be 10 questions and the test will be worth 10 points. Its a basic assessment
that will test here the student is. If a student is struggling this test will determine where a student needs
more help.
If a student needs help this test will determine that, and that child will get that extra help.
Post-Assessment:
My post-assessment will let know what the students weaknesses and strengths. Instead of an exam we will use
youtube for demonstrations.
Scoring Guidelines:
After the youtube demonstration the students will then get a chance to make their own demonstrations
for other students. It will not be a grade but it will be a pass fail.

Differentiated Instructional Support

Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to meet the needs of gifted or accelerated
students: this might be an extra challenge assignment using technology, or an opportunity for these students
to peer-tutor students who are struggling- explain. For the gifted students they will have a chance to move
through the chapter as they want. For the students that present challenges I will take the time out to assist
them. I will also offer tutoring.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the
material: I will actually give them a hard copy of the book, tutoring them, and even encourage peer tutoring.

math.tutorvista.com

This site for students that need help with the upcoming sections. When used correctly a student can learn from
the examples given.

Homework Options and Home Connections

Because lessons are web based homework that will be generated by myself will consist of questions pertaining
to the lessons being learned. I will give a study guide to each student. To make the assignments web based
students will have the opportunity to complete homework online.

Interdisciplinary Connections
This math class will be integrated with reading. Because the math problems require a lot of reading and paying
attention to intricate details. It will also contain social studies, there will be graphs and questions involving
income and economics.

Materials and Resources:

For teachers

I will need a computer, a valid email address, I will also design a website exclusive to
students taking the course. I will answer all question promptly that any student or
parent may have.

For students

Each student will need a computer and a valid email address to effectively
communicate with the instructor.

Key Vocabulary
PC- personal computer
Web based- A Web-based application refers to any program that is accessed over a network
connection using HTTP, rather than existing within a device's memory. Web-based applications
often run inside a Web browser
