CNC MILL SYSTEM

MODEL 5600

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The CNC Mill System, model 5600, provides training in
computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) with an industrialgrade microprocessor-driven CNC mill. The system
allows students to practice computer numerical controlled
(CNC) code programming and editing, learn to operate
mill components, controls, and tools, set a programmed
reference zero, follow the steps necessary to machine a
part to programmed specifications, and apply the machine
code language to current mill technology.
The CNC Mill can machine pieces of soft materials
such as plastic and wax, as well as harder materials such
as aluminum, mild steel, and brass. It consists of a milling
table, a headstock carrying the spindle motor, and a castiron vertical column with dovetail slide. The CNC mill is
mounted on a solid steel chassis and is equipped with
R8 tooling. The stock to be milled is secured in a vise that

holds it to the milling table. Two ball screws, each driven

by a stepper motor, are used to move the table along the
X axis (left and right) and Y axis (backward and forward)
to feed the stock through the periphery of the end mill. A
third ball screw, also driven by a stepper motor, is used
to move the headstock along the Z axis (up and down)
for positioning the end mill. The speed of each stepper
motor can be programmed separately for feed rates up
to 508 mm/min (20 in/min). A 746-W (1.0-hp) DC motor
rotates the spindle at speeds programmable up to
3400 rpm. The end mill can be changed to accommodate
different stock materials and milling designs.

A computer (not included) is used to create NC part

programs with G and M machine codes or their conversational code equivalents. The created programs are downloaded to the on-board microprocessor of the CNC mill,
which stores and executes them. Since the CNC mill
connects directly to the serial or Ethernet port of a computer, or directly to a network, no additional interface card
is required. The computer is free to be used for any
additional applications, since it is not dedicated to the
control of the mill.
The CNC mill is designed for use with the included
Lab-Volt CNC Mill Software, Model 5660. This Windowsbased software permits creation of G and M code part
programs for download to the CNC mill. It features tool
path emulation, which allows students to set up the tool
paths and the cut steps, and create a part program to
simulate tool motion on a monitor in order to verify NC
codes and the finished part prior to the actual cutting.
Canned cycles can be programmed. The software can
import NC part programs created with other
CAM programs that support G and M codes.
The CNC mill features a control panel that permits the
mill to be operated manually. This panel includes a
multiple-line LCD display, an easy-to-use membrane
keypad, an error indicator/pause button, and a key-released emergency stop push-button. The mill parameters,
including the spindle speed, the feed rate, the reference
point, and the X, Y, and Z axes coordinates can be set
by accessing different menus. During the machining, the
control panel displays the X, Y, and Z axes coordinates,
as well as the current feed and spindle speed.
The CNC mill is designed for maximum safety. Safety
doors provide protection during machining. Magnetic
interlocks located on the doors stop the spindle and the
axes if a door is opened during machining. Limit switches
prevent over-travel of the mill's spindle and table. Pressing the emergency stop push-button on the control panel
cuts off the power to the spindle motor and stops the
axes.

The CNC mill supports low-voltage communications

with robotic units to permit students to create automated
work cells, ideal for implementing computer-integrated
manufacturing (CIM). For this purpose, the CNC mill
features a 15-pin TTL/IO port providing four 5-V digital
input and four 5-V digital output lines for
TTL communication to an automation work cell. This port
can be connected to the Lab-Volt Servo-Robot, Model
5250, offered as an option to achieve automatic loading
and unloading of the stock with a robot arm. The CNC mill
also features a 5-pin solenoid driver port providing connections for up to four auxiliary devices. This port can be
connected, for example, to the pneumatic control box of
the optional Pneumatic Vise, Model 5616, to achieve
automatic clamping and unclamping of the stock loaded
in the CNC mill. The TTL/IO and solenoid driver ports of
the CNC mill are M-code supported through the CNC Mill
Software, Model 5660.
The CNC Mill System comes with the accessories,
software, and cables required for system operation.
These include, among others, a vise, a basic milling kit,
100 blocks of industrial machinable wax, a serial cable,
a cross-over Ethernet cable, and a copy of the CNC Mill
Software, Model 5660.
Also included are two user guides. One user guide
gives students experience with equipment designed to
prepare them for the automated manufacturing environment. A user guide for the CNC Mill Software,
Model 5660, is also included. It provides documentation
describing the features of the CNC Mill Software.
To enhance or expand the capabilities of the system,
an assortment of milling tools and stock materials of
different sizes are offered as option.
