What We Do
A.R.I. system solutions protect the pipeline from destructive forces such as surge, pressure transients and entrapped air. These are the leading causes
of pipeline bursts, fractures and cracks which cause irreparable environmental damages such as water losses from leaks, pathogen and contaminant
intrusion through pipe cracks and energy losses from inefficient flows. A.R.I. is committed to solving these problems by providing a system analyses
that helps reduce surge related phenomena by selecting the most efficient A.R.I. air valves and size and locate them on the liquid transmission system.
Another innovative product which reduces water losses in the consumer market is the Unmeasured Flow Reducer (UFR). The UFR, installed near
the water meter, will detect household leaks and change the flow regime to enable the measurement of previously unmeasured water flow into the
home.

caused by these pressure and other hydraulic phenomena. They also provide data reports on the optimum placement and sizing of air valves on
the pipeline.
The main benefits of these abovementioned solutions are lower energy costs, a decrease in corrosion, surges, and pipe bursts, and a reduction in
pipeline fractures and cracking. These are the main causes for water loss and pathogen intrusion in the pipeline.
The applications engineering department also cooperates with numerous academic institutions worldwide by participating in research projects
that develop a better understanding of water conveyance systems. A result has been the publication of numerous articles and research works
documenting the results of these projects.
The A.R.I. air flow laboratory is unique (the only one of its kind in the region) and is designed for testing air valves. The air flow lab was designed and
operates according to the ISO 17025 global standard and was adapted to meet the ISO 9001 quality standard and the ISO 14001 environmental
standard. Bench test assessments are carried out according to worldwide testing standards as well as the European standard EN 1074. The initial
calibration for the air flow lab was based on results from the CESAME (France) High Pressure Test Bench used for flow calibration and testing.
This lab calibrates large diameter gas meters based on the principle of the ORIFICE PLATE.
The A.R.I. air flow laboratory performs assessments of air flow rates during intake and discharge, air flow tests for air valve premature closure as well
as a vacuum bench test which tests the flow rate for air intake into air valves when the pipeline is under negative pressure.
These tests are carried out and calculated in accordance with international standards for moisture and temperature variables.
The air flow laboratory tests all types of air valves (air release, air & vacuum, combination, non-slam, one-way etc.) that operate on water and
wastewater systems and are in the diameter range of 1/2 to 12.
The air flow laboratory employs 4 air storage tanks, each one with a volume capacity of 10 cubic meters, plus an additional 10 cubic meter air tank
that is employed as the working tank.
The air is stored at 13 bar of pressure and enables testing of air valves up to 12 in diameter and, with an additional compressor, enables automatic
air valves to be tested at a pressure of 16 bars.
EnC-IMAGE-11 5
The air flow laboratory is computerized; therefore, once the characteristics of the tested air valves are entered in the computer and the air valve is
connected to the test bench, the test is run. At its conclusion, the test reports are immediately available on the computer without further processing.
The air flow lab is open to invited guests and trainees, who are able to view the testing and receive the results in real time, either viewed on a large
screen or printed as a hard copy.
In early 2010, A.R.I. opened up a new coatings factory for the fusion bonded coating process of all A.R.I. products. The equipment was purchased
specifically for the A.R.I. Coatings Factory. The technology and software components were specifically designed for the A.R.I. product line.
The main processes performed at the coatings factory include:
1- Preparation for painting - heating for the removal of gases, shot blasting and plugging of holes in the casting.
2- Painting - heating, powder coating and oven curing.
The painting process is controlled by monitoring sensors that collect and transfer all conveyor operation data during the entire process. This data is
transmitted to a central computerized controller that has the ability to control the process and change the operational regime of the system as need
be. The data, collected real-time in the computer, controls and documents the whole process. At the end of the coating process, a quality control
process is initiated which includes visual inspection, testing of coating thickness, coating continuity, durability and adhesion testing.
The coating system is adapted to process castings of small, medium and large diameters and is able to customize the process to meet specific
customer requirements for coating thickness. The shop operates on a schedule synchronized to meet required delivery dates as requested by A.R.I.

INTRODUCTION
Innovative Valves for Liquid Transmission Applications
A.R.I. Flow Control Accessories is among the world leaders in the development, manufacture and distribution of liquid transmission accessories.
A.R.I. engineers have developed a wide range of sophisticated valves made from various types of metals and composite materials. The valves are
designed for a variety of applications. Our engineers are working constantly to broaden the range of products, improve and enhance existing product
lines and develop new product lines. We incorporate the highest standards of quality control in compliance with Israeli and international standards.
Most of the A.R.I. products are protected by registered patents. A.R.I. operations, development and marketing systems comply with the requirements
of the international ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 standards and are certified as such.
A.R.I. is committed to respond to the needs of a changing market. To do so, we strive for a high standard of quality, innovation and advanced
technological development as our principal objective.
At A.R.I., we focus on providing products with longevity and minimal maintenance. We offer a comprehensive warranty, excellent service, consulting
and training for each customer at the plant, in the field or at any installation site, as necessary.
Air Valves
The A.R.I. line of automatic air release valves and the automatic air release components of A.R.I. combination air valves are based on the rolling seal
technology. The A.R.I. patented sealing mechanism replaces traditional configurations that incorporate a ball float closing against a round orifice.
While the system is under pressure the A.R.I. rolling seal mechanism, with its aerodynamically-designed float, releases air in large quantities, often
greater than in traditional valves. They also provide for the soft dynamic closure of the valve. This concept of a rolling seal mechanism enabled A.R.I.
to develop small, lightweight, cost effective air valves.
The self-cleaning feature of the rolling seal mechanism greatly reduces the possibility of clogging, leaking and the adhesion of suspended particles to
the rolling seal surface.
The valve body and interior components are made of corrosion-resistant materials. This ensures years of corrosion-free and maintenance-free
operation, even under extreme environmental conditions.
The A.R.I. line of products also includes a wide variety of air & vacuum and combination air valves. They are made of the same quality materials as
the automatic air release valves and provide the same level of quality and assurances.
These valves are offered in dimensions of 1/2 to 1 (automatic air release valves) and 1" to 12"(air & vacuum and combination air valves). They
provide solutions for various applications in all industrial fields. These products are lightweight, have a compact profile and are offered at competitive
prices.
The quantity of free air must be controlled in liquid transmission systems. The presence of air/gas bubbles and pockets can be beneficial or
detrimental to the transmission system under different conditions. The absence of air, such as exist under vacuum conditions, prevents suitable
protection for the transmission systems.
EnC-intrWTR/SWG-11 7
1. Air blockage in the line causes unstable flow of the liquid and, in extreme circumstances, a total stoppage of flow.
2. High head losses, resulting in large energy losses.
3 The impact of surge, as a result of the presence of air in the system, can cause damage to pipes, accessories and connectors.
4. Erroneous readings of water meters and automatic metering valves.
5. Extensive damage to impeller systems in water meters, flow regulators, sprinklers and sprayers.
6. Pitting and increased corrosion in metal components of the systems.
7. Safety risks to operators increase due to the possibility of high energy bursts in locations where there are concentrations of compressed air.
INTRODUCTION
Using A.R.I Air Valves to Control Air and Prevent Damage
There are three principal types of air valves used in liquid transmission applications:
Air & Vacuum Valves
Automatic Air Release Valves
Combination (double orifice) Air Valves
Air & Vacuum Valves automatically discharge air at high flow rates during filling of the system and admit air at high flow rates during draining, at
water column separation, and in cases of down-surge in the system.
Air & vacuum valves are known also as: large orifice air valves, vacuum breakers, low-pressure air valves and air vacuum valves.
Automatic Air Release Valves release air entrapped in the system while under pressure. The air release flow rates of the automatic air release valves
are lower than those of the air & vacuum valves. They are also known as: air release valves and small orifice air valves.
Combination Air Valves include both air & vacuum and automatic air release components in one unit. They perform both functions:
- They discharge air at high flow rates during filling of the system and admit air at high flow rates at drainage or water column separation, AND
- They release entrapped air while the system is under pressure.
Combination air valves are also known as double orifice air valves.
It is highly recommended that a basic review be made before selecting the appropriate air valves and determining their sizes and locations:
- The chemical composition of the liquid that passes through them.
- The possibility of extreme pressure changes such as up-surges and down-surges.
- Analysis using ARIavCAD software for efficient design of the system (software available from A.R.I).
Typical installation locations:
- In pump stations.
- At locations where pressure drops.
- At peaks along the line.
- At locations of large convex slope changes
- Along line segments without air valves.
- Near isolating valves on the line.
- On filter setups.
- Before flow meters and automatic devices.
- At line ends.
INTRODUCTION
Recommendations for the Determination of the Required Diameter of Air &
Vacuum and Combination Air Valves
To determine the diameter of air valve required, the first essential step is to define the task that the air valve must perform and the level of protection
that the valve must provide.
1 - The controlled or free discharge of air during the line filling stage:
A. Controlled discharge The air valve diameter is determined in order to limit flow / filling speed.
B. Free discharge The air valve is used to discharge air during line filling, but is not used to limit flow / filling speed.
2- Intake of air to prevent negative pressure (vacuum), down-surge and/or cavitation:
A. When the line is drained through drainage valves with a defined location and size.
B. When the line bursts at predefined or not defined points along its length; it's bursting up to a pre-determined size of burst in the pipe and the free
drainage of water out of the line through the burst.
C. When there is water column separation consequential to extreme changes in the regimen of water flow through the pipe.
The required air flow rate and the air valve diameter are determined in accordance with the objective sought when installing the air valve
and as explained below:
- If the purpose of the air valve is only to limit filling speed the required air release speed is equal to the filling rate (for the system), which is a
function of the required filling rate.
- If the purpose of the air valve is to protect the system in the event of an burst, which splits the pipe across its entire cross section, with
consequential free flowing drainage of the line, the accepted method is to determine the required rate of air intake according to a burst analysis
based on one of the flow equations, such as the Hazen Williams equation:
Burst Analysis
The burst analysis is based on the Hazen Williams Equation:
Q B =KC H W D 2 . 63 ( h f / L a c t ) 0 .5 4 a nd L a c t = ( h f 2 +L hp 2 ) 0 .5
Where, in our case:
Q B = Air intake flow rate requirement for vacuum protection at full diameter pipe burst m /sec
K = Unit constant = 0.278 for metric units
C H W = Hazen Williams Coefficient for the pipen- no units
D = Diameter of pipe m
h f = Elevation change between the two ends of the pipe segment being analyzed m
L a c t = Actual length of the pipe segment (not its horizontal projection)- m
L h p = Length of the horizontal projection of the pipe segment - m
3
EnC-intrWTR/SWG-11 9
Given that the results of this analysis are often extreme, the common practice is to supply air at a percentage of the calculated results.
A.R.I. does not recommend using the Burst Equation.
- If the purpose of the air valve is to protect the system during drainage through a defined drainage valve or at pipe rupture, it is recommended to
use the drainage and rupture analysis based on the orifice equation.
INTRODUCTION
Drainage and Rupture Analyses
Air intake flow rate requirement at drainage through a drain valve or a rupture is:
1. Q d = C d ( D d 2 / 4 ) ( 2 g h) 0 .5
For drains or ruptures whose equivalent diameters are greater than 30% of the pipe diameter:
Qd
Cd
Dd
g
h
M
Dp
Here, the initial Qd was calculated with no losses. After the initial calculation of Qd , we calculate the Hazen Williams friction head loss, hf due to
this initial Qd:
3. h f = Q d 1. 852 L a ct / ( K 1 .8 5 2 C d 1 .8 5 2 D d 4 .8 7 ) and
L ac t = ( h 1 2 + L h p1 2 ) 0 .5 + ( h 2 2 + L h p2 2 ) 0.5 + (h n 2 +L hp n 2 ) 0.5
Where:
hf
K
L ac t
h 1 , h 2 , h n
L h p 1 , L h p 2 , L hpn
4. N e w h = h - h f
Use this New h in either equation 1 or equation 2 above (depending on the size of the drain valve or rupture, relative to the pipe diameter),
and calculate the final Q .
d
Given that the air valve diameter required must be calculated separately for each separate air point in the system, the scope of the calculation work
required is very considerable.
To solve this problem, A.R.I. has developed a unique program ARIavCAD. The ARIavCAD program determines the diameter and the location
for each air valve and selects from the range of valves manufactured by A.R.I., the most appropriate air valve for installation at each point. Use of
the ARIavCAD program is highly recommended. For further details, please contact the A.R.I. Service Department.
INTRODUCTION
Check Valves
One-way or check valves are liquid direction devices that allow one-directional flow in the pipeline.
- Controlling directions of flow of liquid in systems in which there are different sources of supply.
- Preventing reverse flow into pumps when pump operation stops.
- Maintaining down-stream pipe pressure in case of a pressure drop at the supply source.
- Preventing drainage from high to low areas.
- Swing-type check valves, check valves with top covers, check valves with a tilting disc, dual-leaf check valves, wafer type check valves, spring-loaded
check valves, etc.
All one-directional valves are built from a basic combination of a body (straight or angular) connected to piping and to a one-way sealing mechanism.
The valves are distinguished from one another by the structure of the body and the various sealing mechanisms.
The purpose of the various types of check valves is to provide solutions and adaptations for various applications.
The R&D, engineering and manufacturing divisions of A.R.I. worked together to develop a basket of check valves for a variety of applications. They
meet the needs of designers, installers, users and maintenance personnel.
A.R.I. check valves are adapted for industry, wastewater, desalination, hot water, contaminated water, seawater, agricultural and gardening
applications, potable water, water treatment systems, municipal lines and oil installations on offshore platforms.
1. The body and cover are cast from a variety of corrosion-resistant materials which cover a wide range of chemicals.
2. The body has a barrel-shaped structure that allows unrestricted flow.
3. A sealing mechanism incorporates a disc that opens fully even under low flow rates and swings up and out of the flow path (full flow). These two
properties:
- enable for the flow of solids-laden liquids without blockage or stagnation, AND
- ensure particularly low head losses (in the range of only a few centimeters), resulting in large energy savings.
4. The top cover provides access for inspection and maintenance without the need for dismantling the valve from the pipeline.
5. The sealing seat assembly is accessible for replacement without dismantling the valve from the line.
6. The internal configuration inhibits cavitation.
7. The shaft that hinges the disc extends from the body of the valve. It serves for mounting counter weights which regulate the closing time of the
disc, and greatly reduce the effects of slam and surge.
8. The enhanced bearing assembly is unique and the shaft sealing is reliable and long-lasting.
9. The hinged arm is connected to the disc by two pins that prevent premature wear of the sealing assembly.
10. A variety of structural materials are used in the sealing mechanism, the disc, and the sealing seat.
11. Interior and exterior coatings are resistant to corrosion, chemicals and to UV.

High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water will lift the
float which seals the valve.
At any time during system operation, should internal pressure of the
system fall below atmospheric pressure, air will enter the system.
The smooth discharge of air reduces pressure surges and other
destructive phenomena.
The intake of air in response to negative pressure protects the system
from destructive vacuum conditions and prevents damage caused
by water column separation. Air entry is essential to efficiently drain
the system.
The air release component releases entrapped air in pressurized
systems.
Without air valves, pockets of accumulated air may cause the
following hydraulic disturbances:
- Restriction of effective flow due to a throttling effect as would a
partially closed valve. In extreme cases this will cause complete flow
stoppage.
- Obstruction of efficient hydraulic transmission due to air flow
disturbances.
- Accelerate cavitation damages.
- Pressure transients and surges.
- Corrosion in pipes, fittings and accessories.
- Danger of a high-energy burst of compressed air.
- Inaccuracies in flow metering.
As the system starts to fill, the valve functions according to the
following stages:
1. Entrapped air in the pipeline is discharged by the valve.
2. Liquid enters the valve, lifting the float which pushes the sealing

The D-040 series Combination Air Valve has the features of both an
air release valve and an air & vacuum valve.
The air release component is designed to automatically release small
pockets of air to the atmosphere as they accumulate along a pipeline
or piping system when it is full and operating under pressure.
The air & vacuum component is designed to automatically
discharge or admit large volumes of air during the filling or draining
of a pipeline or piping system. This valve will open to relieve
negative pressures whenever water column separation occurs.
Applications
- Pump stations: after the pump and after the check valve.
- Downstream (after) and upstream (before) of shut-off valves.
- After deep-well pumps.
- On long constant-sloped pipeline segments.
- At peaks along the pipeline and at peaks relative to hydraulic
gradient.
- At end lines.
- Before water meters.
- On strainers and filters.
D-040-C - additional applications
- Water pipelines vulnerable to vandalism and/or water theft.
- Water systems found in remote areas.
Operation
EnC-D040WTR-11 21
The air & vacuum component, with the large orifice, discharges
air at high flow rates during the filling of the system and admits air
into the system at high flow rates during its drainage and at water
column separation.
High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water will lift the
float, which seals the valve.
2. Liquid enters the valve, lifting the float which pushes the sealing
mechanism to its sealing position.
3. Entrapped air, which accumulates at peaks and along the system,
rises to the top of the valve, which in turn displaces the liquid in the
valves body.
4. The float descends, unsealing the rolling seal. The air release
orifice opens and the accumulated air is released.
5. Liquid enters the valve and the float rises, pushing the rolling seal
back to its sealing position.
When internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure
(negative pressure):
1. The float will immediately drop down, opening the air & vacuum
and air release orifices.
2. Air will enter the system.
Main Features
D-040
operating parts are made of specially selected, corrosion- resistant
materials.
- Due to its light weight, the valve may be installed on plastic piping
systems, as well as other lightweight piping systems.
- D-040-C the body is protected in a metal shell for anti-vandalism/
theft applications.

The low pressure air valve sealing mechanism is built with a very
soft and sensitive seal. On one hand, it enables the full and effective
discharge of air and, on the other hand, the air valve will close and
seal tightly when water fills the valve, even if the water pressure is
particularly low. Most other air valves are built so that it takes a
higher minimum sealing pressure to effectively seal the valve. The
A.R.I. air valve requires a minimum water pressure of just 0.2 bar to
effectively seal. Low pressure air valves are designed to prevent water
leaks through the discharge orifice of the air valve.

The air & vacuum component, with the large orifice, discharges
air at high flow rates during the filling of the system and admits air
into the system at high flow rates during its drainage and at water
column separation.
High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water will lift the
float which seals the valve.
In extreme cases this will cause complete flow
stoppage.
- Obstruction of efficient hydraulic transmission due to air flow
disturbances.

back to its sealing position.
When internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure
(negative pressure):
1. The floats will immediately drop down, opening the air &
vacuum and air release orifices.
2. Air will enter the system.

The D-060 series Combination Air Valve has the features of both an
air release valve and an air & vacuum valve.

Operation
EnC-D060M1WTR-11 57
The air & vacuum component, with the large orifice, discharges
air at high flow rates during the filling of the system and admits air
into the system at high flow rates during its drainage and at water
column separation.
High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water will lift the
float which seals the valve.
At any time during system operation, should internal pressure of the
system fall below atmospheric pressure, air will enter the system.
The smooth discharge of air reduces pressure surges and other
destructive phenomena.
The intake of air in response to negative pressure protects the system
from destructive vacuum conditions and prevents damage caused by
water column separation. Air entery is essential to efficiently drain
2. Liquid enters the valve, lifting the float which pushes the sealing
mechanism to its sealing position.
3. Entrapped air, which accumulates at peaks and along the system,
rises to the top of the valve, which in turn displaces the liquid in the
valve's body.
4. The float descends, unsealing the rolling seal. The air release
orifice opens and the accumulated air is released.
5. Liquid enters the valve and the float rises, pushing the rolling seal
back to its sealing position.
When internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure
(negative pressure):
1. The floats will immediately drop down, opening the air &
vacuum and air release orifices.
2. Air will enter the system.

The D-060 NS series Combination Air Valve has the features of both
an air release valve and an air & vacuum valve.
The air release component is designed to automatically release small
pockets of air to the atmosphere as they accumulate along a pipeline
or piping system when it is full and operating under pressure.
The air & vacuum component is designed to automatically discharge
or admit large volumes of air during the filling or draining of a
pipeline or piping system. This valve will open to relieve negative
pressures whenever water column separation occurs.

Operation in Rapid Filling of the Pipeline:
1. When water, rapidly filling the pipe line, pushes the air out
through the Air Valve, a differential air pressure is created across
the valve orifice.
4. When water reaches the kinetic float, it lifts it up, closing the
kinetic orifice and completing the kinetic cycle.
5. The vented Check Valve Orifice Disc will come back to its
normal open position.
6. When water is drained out of the pipe line, the resulting pressure
drop lets the kinetic float fall down, opening the orifice fully for
intake of high volume of air into the line.

- The quick connector between the adaptor and the shut-off valve
facilitates detachment during handling.
Operation
- The integrated assembly handle eases the process of lifting the air
valve assembly out from the valve box.
The D-060 NS series Combination Non Slam Air Valve is a surgedampening, slam-preventing, 3-stage combination air valve. The air
valve provides high capacity vacuum protection and, at the same
time, efficient surge suppression.
1. At sudden drainage and/or water column separation (sudden
pump trips or valve closure, for instance), the air & vacuum orifice
admits air at high flow rates, thus preventing vacuum.
2. As the water column and/or pressure wave returns, large volumes
of air are discharged at high velocities, raising the non-slam disc,
partially closing the air & vacuum orifice and allowing air to exhaust
slowly through the smaller orifice of the non-slam disc.

When the system is charged and the pipeline begins to fill with
water, air flows in the pipeline and enters into the dynamic air valve,
raising the rolling diaphragm sealing assembly to the open position.
Air is then discharged, mainly out through the lower chamber large
orifice as well as small amounts of air released out through upper
chamber operating valve orifice. When the ensuing water enters the
dynamic air valve, it fills the lower chamber and some of it flows
up through the orifice chamber and enters into the upper operating
chamber, raising the float of the operating valve which rolls the
sealing mechanism to its sealed position. Pressure develops inside
the upper operating chamber, bringing about a controlled lowering
and sealing of the rolling diaphragm sealing assembly, which, in
turn, closes the lower chamber large orifice.
NOTE: It is recommended to attach a drainage pipe to the
connection on the large orifice outlet as some water will be expelled
from the orifice during this closure stage. The size of the drainage
pipe should be, at a minimum, the diameter of the outlet and the
unattached end should remain open to the atmosphere.
At this stage, only the automatic air release component continues
to function and releases air through its small orifice. With a
reduction in line pressure, during drainage or shut-off, the pressure
in the valve is reduced and is lower then the outside atmospheric
pressure. The vacuum created will cause the rolling diaphragm

The K-010 series Air & Vacuum Valve discharges air during the
filling or charging of the system and admits air into the system
during system drainage, valve or pump shut-off or at water column
separation.
Applications
Operation
The air & vacuum valve discharges air at high flow rates during the
filling of the system and admits air at high flow rates during the
drainage , pump shut-off or at water column separation.
High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water entry will cause
the sealing of the valve.
At any time during system operation, should internal pressure of the
system fall below atmospheric pressure, air will enter the system.
The smooth discharge of air prevents pressure surges and other
destructive phenomena.
The intake of air in response to negative pressure protects the system
from destructive vacuum conditions and prevents damage caused
by water column separation. Air entry is essential to efficiently drain
the system.

The K-010 M1 series Air & Vacuum Valve discharges air during
the filling or charging of the system and admits air into the system
during system drainage, valve or pump shut-off or at water column
Air entry is essential to efficiently drain
the system.
As the system starts to fill, the valve functions according to the
following stages:
1. Entrapped air is discharged by the valve.
2. The liquid enters the valve, lifting the float and sealing the valve.

The S-014, S-015, S-016 series automatic air release valve releases
accumulated air from the system while it is under pressure.
The presence of air in a water system can reduce the effective
cross sectional flow area resulting in increased head loss and
flow. Unwanted air may also cause water hammer and metering
inaccuracies, while hastening corrosion.
Applications
- On high-pressure pumps.
- On high-pressure delivery pipelines.

The
ARI air valve requires a minimum water pressure of just 0.2 bar
(3psi) to effectively seal. Low pressure air valves are designed to
prevent water leaks through the discharge orifice of the valv

valves body.
2. The float descends, unsealing the rolling seal. The automatic air
release orifice opens and the accumulated air is released.
3. Liquid enters the valve and the float rises, pushing the rolling seal
back to its sealing position.
Note: Automatic air release valves are designed to release air as it
accumulates at peaks in pressurized systems. They are not normally
recommended for vacuum protection or for discharging large
volumes of air, because of their inherently small orifices. For this
purpose, air & vacuum valves are recommended as they have much
larger orifices.
However, automatic air release valves will permit air to re-enter the
system under vacuum conditions. If this is not desirable, specify the
one-way out check valve.

Description
The NR-040 series Swing-Type Check Valve allows for onedirectional flow and prevents the return flow of the liquid to its
source.
The check valve is designed with a removable top cover which allows
for cleaning and maintenance of the check valve without the need to
remove it from the pipeline.
The disc is attached to the check valve body with the aid of an arm.
The check valve seals with the closure of the disc against the sealing
ring which is located at the opening of the check valve body.
Applications
Operation
- Liquid flow through the check valve raises the disc to its open
position and allows for the flow of liquids to the pipeline.
- Two Possible Situations for Disc Closure
1. Regular quiet closure of the disc.
2. Closure during the return flow of the water column, a situation
that can cause slam of the disc and damage to the check valve.
- In order to prevent this destructive phenomenon, it is
recommended to install a counterweight on the shaft of the check
valve. With this addition, the disc will close at the point of water
flow cessation and before the water column returns. The returning
wave will impact on a closed disc and the acceleration of the disc
closure will result in a minimal slam effect.
- Another option is to install a hydraulic piston to control the
closure of the disc.

Water Supply
PN 10
Backflow Preventer
Description
Applications
Operation
EnC-RP500WTR-11 137
During normal flow, the two check valves open to supply water
downstream. The Relief Valve is power-activated by upstream
pressure and is kept shut by a diaphragm, through the internal
control system.
In the zone, the area between the check valves, pressure is
maintained at approximately 0.43 bar lower than the water supply
pressure. The Outlet Check Valve is spring-loaded to maintain a
minimum pressure decrease of 0.07 bar.
When negative pressure or sub-atmospheric conditions occur, the
Inlet Check Valve closes to prevent backflow. If the Outlet Check
Valve fails, the pressure between the two check valves rises, opening
the Relief Valve and releasing the water to the atmosphere.
The Relief Valve operates on differential pressure. Supply pressure
on the upstream side of the Inlet Check Valve acts against the
diaphragm to close the Relief Valve during normal operation. In the
event of backpressure or backsiphonage, the Relief Valve will open
to maintain the pressure in the zone at 0.14 bar less than the inlet
pressure.
Note: If water continues to drain from the Relief Valve, check the
Troubleshooting section for probable causes and solutions.

Operation
The air & vacuum component discharges air at high flow rates
during the filling of the system and admits air into the system at
high flow rates during its drainage and at water column separation.
Air entry is essential to efficiently drain
the system.
The air release component releases entrapped air in pressurized
systems.

pressurized systems.
-Danger of high-energy bursts of compressed air.

Two-directional discharge outlet cover
The D-023 combination air valve for wastewater is available with an
optional stainless steel two-directional discharge outlet cover.
One outlet is always open for air discharge while the other is closed
with a plug. Both outlets have a 3 female thread.
With this option, air can be discharged either in a horizontal or
vertical direction, depending on the installation. This option allows
for easy vertical air discharge from valves installed in manholes.
This cover is standard on all D-023 SB underground air valves and
is optional for all D-023 air valves, both stainless steel and epoxy
coated.

D-023 NS
Combination Air Valve for Wastewater - Non Slam
The D-023 Combination Wastewater Non Slam accessory will
dampen surge and prevent slam. The non slam accessory provides
efficient surge suppression.
At sudden drainage and/or water column separation (sudden pump
trips or valve closure, for instance), the air & vacuum orifice admits
air at high flow rates, thus preventing vacuum. As the water column
and/or pressure wave returns, the large volumes of air are exhausted
slowly through the smaller orifice of the non-slam acessory. This
slowly exhausting air pocket dampens the slam of the returning
water column, thus suppressing the pressure surge. As the water flow
arrives at a much slower rate, dampened by the slower air discharge,
it buoys up the main float, gently closing the air & vacuum
component of the air valve.

may cause the following hydraulic disturbances:
- Restriction of effective flow due to a throttling effect as would a

- Obstruction of efficient hydraulic transmission due to air flow
disturbances.
- Accelerate cavitation damages.
- Pressure transients and surges.
- Corrosion in pipes, fittings and accessories.
- Danger of high-energy bursts of compressed air.
- Inaccuracies in flow metering.
As the system starts to fill, the combination wastewater valve
functions according to the following stages:
1. Entrapped air/gas is discharged by the valve.
2. When the liquid level reaches the valves lower portion, the lower
float is lifted, pushing the sealing mechanism to its sealing position.
3. The entrapped air is confined in a pocket between the liquid
and the sealing mechanism. The air pressure is equal to the system
pressure.
4. Increases in system pressure compress the trapped air in the upper
section of the conical chamber. The conical shape assures the height
of the air gap. This enables separation of the liquid from the sealing
mechanism.
5. Entrapped air (gas), accumulating at peaks and along the system,
rises to the top of the valve, and displaces the liquid in the valves
body.
6. When the liquid level is lowered to a point where the float is no
longer buoyant, the float drops, unsealing the rolling seal.
The air release orifice opens and allows part of the air that
accumulated in the upper portion of the valve to be released to the
atmosphere.
7. Liquid enters the valve. The float rises, pushing the rolling seal to
its sealing position. The remaining air gap prevents the wastewater
from fouling the mechanism.
When internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure
(negative pressure):
1. The floats will immediately drop down, opening the air &
vacuum and air release orifices.
2. Air will enter the system.

The S-020 and S-022 Automatic Air Release Valves are specially
designed to operate with liquids carrying solid particles such as
wastewater and effluent.
The valves release accumulated air (gases) from the system while
under pressure and operating.
The valves unique design enables the separation of the liquid from
the sealing mechanism and assures optimum working conditions.
The presence of air in a wastewater system can reduce the effective
cross sectional flow area, resulting in increased head loss and
decreased flow.
Unwanted air may also cause water hammer and metering
inaccuracies, while hastening corrosion.
Applications
Operation
EnC-S020SWG-11 193
A.R.I. models S-020, S-022 are air release valves for wastewater
systems.
As the system starts to fill, the automatic air release valve
functions according to the following stages:
1. When the liquid level reaches the valves lower portion, the lower
float is lifted, pushing the sealing mechanism to its sealing position.
2. The entrapped air is confined in a pocket between the liquid
and the sealing mechanism. The air pressure is equal to the system
pressure.
3. Increases in system pressure compress the trapped air in the upper
section of the conical chamber. The conical shape assures the height
of the air gap. This enables separation of the liquid from the sealing
mechanism.
4. Entrapped air (gas), accumulating at peaks and along the system,
rises to the top of the valve, and displaces the liquid in the valves
body.
5. When the liquid level is lowered to a point where the float is no
longer buoyant, the float drops, unsealing the rolling seal. The air
release orifice opens and allows part of the air that accumulated in
the upper portion of the valve to be released to the atmosphere.
6. Liquid enters the valve. The float rises, pushing the rolling seal to
its sealing position. The remaining air gap prevents the wastewater
from fouling the mechanism.
However, air release valves will permit air to enter the system under
vacuum conditions. If this is not desirable, specify the one-way out
check valve.

the upper portion of the valve to be released to the atmosphere.
6. Liquid enters the valve. The float rises, pushing the rolling seal to
its sealing position. The remaining air gap prevents the wastewater
from fouling the mechanism.
However, air release valves will permit air to enter the system under
vacuum conditions. If this is not desirable, specify the one-way out
check valve.
Main Features
S-025-SB
- Maximum intermittent temperature: 90 C.
- The unique design of the valve prevents contact between the
wastewater and the sealing mechanism by creating an air gap at the
top of the valve. These features are achieved by:
1. The conical body shape: designed to maintain the maximum
distance between the liquid and the sealing mechanism and still
obtain minimum body length.
2. Spring-loaded joint between the stem and the upper
float: vibrations of the lower float will not unseal the air release
component. Release of air will occur only after enough air
accumulates.
3. The Rolling Seal mechanism: less sensitive to pressure
differentials than a direct float seal. It accomplishes this by having a
comparably large orifice for a wide pressure range (up to 10 bar).
4. Funnel-shaped lower body: designed to ensure that residue
wastewater matter will fall back into the system and be carried away
by the main pipe.
- Dynamic design allows for high velocity air discharge while
preventing premature closure.
- All inner metal parts made of stainless steel. Float made of
composite materials.
Valve Selection
- Two different installation lengths:
1. 800 mm tube; complete system length: 875 mm.
2. 1000 mm tube; complete system length: 1075 mm.
- Air valve body: Composite Materials or Stainless Steel SAE 316.
- Additional Accessories:
With a One-way, Out-only attachment, allows for air discharge
only, prevents air intake.

Operation
EnC-NR040WTR-11 209

Control and Effect of Air in Irrigation Systems
Air in an irrigation system must be controlled because the presence of air bubbles and air pockets, or their absence (vacuum), can cause problems and damage
to the system.
Problems and Damage Caused by the Presence of Air Pockets and Air Bubbles in Water Pipelines
1. Uneven flow through the pipe sometimes even stopping water flow altogether.
2. High losses of water head and consequently, energy losses.
3. Water hammer damage to the pipes, accessories and connectors.
4. False readings of water meters and automatic metering devices (and consequent payment for water not supplied, virtual use of water above licensed
pumping limits, under utilization of available water supplies, inadequate supply of water to crops because plants receive less water than the volume measured
by the hydrometer or water meter).
5. Inadequate supply of water to agricultural crops caused by throttling of flows and accumulated pressure losses at system ends.
6. Extensive damage to impeller systems in water meters, hydrometers, sprinklers and sprayers.
7. Corrosion damage.
8. Physical risk - when large volumes of air are released at high velocity.
1. Mud and dirt are sucked into the system through drippers.
2. Seals, drippers and other accessories are sucked into the main distribution lines.
3. Uncontrolled entry of chemicals and fertilizers injected into agricultural and landscape irrigation systems.
4. Vacuum-induced collapse of pipes and accessories (sub-atmospheric pressures).
5. Increased risk of surge and slam conditions during the release of air pockets.
6. Cavitation damages..
There are three main types of air valves installed in irrigation systems: air & vacuum, automatic air release and combination (double) valves.
Air & Vacuum valves discharge large quantities of air from non-pressurized pipes and are used mainly when filling a line. These valves also make it possible
to admit large quantities of air when lines are drained and at water column separation. Air & Vacuum valves are also known as: kinetic valves; large orifice
air valves, vacuum breakers, low-pressure air valves and air-relief valves.
Automatic air release valves continuously release relatively small quantities of air from a pressurized line. The automatic air valve is also known as an: air
release valve; small orifice air valve and as a pressure air valve.
Combination air valves fulfill the tasks required of both types of valve air & vacuum and automatic. In other words they discharge or admit large
volumes of air when filling or emptying a system and continuously release small volumes air when the line is pressurized.
Combination air valves are also known as double orifice air valves.
The Range of Advanced Air Valves from A.R.I. Flow Control Accessories
A.R.I. is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of air valves. A.R.I. engineers have developed a range of advanced composite material air valves, specially
designed for use in agricultural and landscaping applications.
Technologically, the product range is based on the A.R.I. patented rolling seal mechanism, which replaces the old system that uses the valve float to seal air
valve orifices. The rolling seal mechanism and the aerodynamically designed float, in this line of air valves, provide much greater efficiency (larger orifices)
and have better resilience to withstand dynamic valve closure.
The new sealing mechanism enabled the development of small, lightweight air valves with a superior cost / benefit ratio. The width of the SG-10 automatic
air valve from A.R.I. is a mere 87 millimeters; it stands no more than 140 mm high and weighs just 330 grams. Despite its small dimensions, the area of air
orifice in this valve reaches 12 mm, which permits the release of 152 cubic meters of air per hour and can withstand pressures of up to 10 bar.
The valve's integral self-cleaning mechanism prevents blockages, leaks and particles from sticking to the sealing faces.
EnC-RCMAGR-11 13
The DG-10 model valve is just 180 mm wide, (including the protruding drainage funnel) 209 mm tall and weighs only 1.1 kg. With 12mm of automatic
orifice area and 804 mm of kinetic orifice area, intake and release of air is very efficient even more efficient than much larger and much heavier air valves,
which are overwhelmed and slam closed at lower differential pressures. The valve's integral self-cleaning mechanism prevents blockages and leaks and
particles do not stick to the sealing faces.
The R&D team at A.R.I has also developed the AV-010 air & vacuum valve to provide solutions for agricultural and landscaping irrigation systems. The
product is manufactured from composite materials and is available in 3, 2, 1 and 3/4 sizes. It is lightweight, compact and very competitively priced.

To calculate the number of DG-10 (Barak) air valves required in an irrigation system, two criteria must be considered:
- The need to protect against vacuum damage (achieved by admitting air into the system)
- The need to discharge air from the system when it is filled with water
Air discharge requirements are usually lower than the air intake requirements for a line because the rates at which lines can be filled are generally
lower. Diagram Number 1 can be used to establish air discharge requirements during line filling. In Diagram Number 1, it can be seen that one
DG-10 valve is enough for pipes with a diameter of up to 8 (and sometimes up to 10).
This diagram is based on the release of air with a differential pressure of 0.4 bar.
The number of 2 DG-10 air valves required during the filling
of a line according to line filling rate (with a pressure differential
of 0.4 Bar) and pipe diameter.
Vacuum protection demands are usually higher, and this is particularly true when the line has acute angles of ascent and descent and / or when the
pipe has a large diameter. Diagram Number 2 is based on the Hazen Williams friction loss equation; a Hazen Williams coefficient of 110 and a
negative pressure differential of 0.4 bar.
The number of 2 DG-10 air valves required to protect against
vacuum damage during line drainage according to pipe diameter
and slopes of up to 15 (with a negative pressure differential
of 0.4 Bar)
RECOMMENDATIONS
Critical Velocity Required for Transporting Air Bubbles
At the point where the rate of water flow drops below the critical velocity for air movement, air valves should be located at these critical points.
Installation of air valves is particularly important along long horizontal sections of line because flow rates are too low to carry air pockets and bubbles
to the downstream air valves. Installation of air valves is also important on long descending sections of pipe in which the flow of water must overcome
the opposing flow of air (flowing naturally to the high spots). See: Graphs describing critical speeds.
Calculating the Number of AV-010 Air & Vacuum Valves to be Installed in a Sub-surface Dripper
System
An AV-010 air & vacuum valve, used to prevent vacuum conditions as low as a negative pressure of 1 m, must be installed in every sub-surface drip
system to prevent suction of dirt into the drippers and subsequent blockages.
An AV-010 air & vacuum valve must also be used to prevent the formation of a vacuum in dripper system laterals and thereby prevent their collapse.
If the dripper-irrigated field is relatively flat and has no significant topographical changes, planning of air valve location will be based on the systems
working pressures and flow.
If the dripper-irrigated field contains substantial topographic changes, calculation of the AV-010 air & vacuum valve numbers and locations will be
based on the maximum drainage flow or on the flow of fluids during a burst the size of the pipe diameter, or the larger of the two
An Example of How to Evaluate The Size of Valves Required for Vacuum Prevention in a Dripper
System with a Negative Pressure of 0.1 Bar.
Sample: At a slope of up to 10%, when air supply must reach 300 m3/hr.

The D-040 series Combination Air Valve has the features of both an
air release valve and an air & vacuum valve.
The air release component is designed to automatically release small
pockets of air to the atmosphere as they accumulate at peaks or
along a pipeline or piping system when it is full and operating under
pressure.
The air & vacuum component is designed to automatically
discharge or admit large volumes of air during the filling or draining
of a pipeline or piping system. This valve will open to relieve
negative pressures whenever water column separation occurs.
Applications
- Pump stations: after the pump and after the check valve.
- On main lines and heads of systems.
- At the end of lines and at the end of a sub main
- On strainers and filters.
Operation
EnC-DG10AGR-11
The air & vacuum component, with the large orifice, discharges air
at high flow rates during the filling of the system and admits
air into the system at high flow rates during its drainage and at water
column separation.
High velocity air will not blow the float shut. Water will lift the
float, which seals the valve.

Applications
Recommended installations:
-Standard installation on water systems when the pipeline diameter
is 8 or greater.
-Installation on water systems for all pipeline diameters when the
slope of the pipeline is greater than 2%-3%.
Operation
When the system is charged and the pipeline begins to fill with
water, air flows in the pipeline and enters into the dynamic air valve,
raising the large orifice sealing assembly to the open position. Air is
then discharged, mainly out through the lower chamber large orifice
as well as small amounts of air released out through upper chamber
operating valve orifice. When the ensuing water enters the dynamic
air valve, it fills the lower chamber and some of it flows up through
the orifice chamber and enters into the upper operating chamber,
raising the float of the operating valve which rolls the sealing
mechanism to its sealed position. Pressure develops inside the upper
operating chamber, bringing about a controlled lowering and sealing
of the large orifice sealing assembly, which, in turn, closes the lower
chamber large orifice.

1. Entrapped air is released by the valve.
2. Water enters the valve, lifting the float and sealing the valve.
When internal pressure falls below atmospheric pressure
(negative pressure):
The float will immediately drop down, opening the air & vacuum

Check Valve
Description
The NR-030 Swing-Type Non-Return Valve allows for onedirectional flow and prevents the return flow of the liquid to its
source.
This check valve is designed for installation on horizontal pumps,
boosters and filtration systems, preventing return flow and providing
for quiet closure and total sealing of the sealing face.
The length of the NR-030 check valve is designed to allow
installation between two flanges of short spacing, allowing for
installation of the check valve in small and narrow systems.

The base (5) of the limit switch and the limit switch itself (6) should
be installed on the brass plug (2) of the non-return valve, being
firmly fastened there by the bolt (1) located on the side of the base.
The activator (3) should be installed on the shaft of the non-return
valve, with the straight part pointing at the limit switch gate pulley.
The activator can be adjusted in such a way that it activates the limit
switch according to the desired opening / closing angle of the nonreturn valve. Once it is properly set, the activator is fastened to the
shaft with the fastening bolt (4).
