Crow Hill, the title itself is acting as a oxymoron: crow being a living
being and hill being part of nature, justifying the poem as it presents nature
and living beings in an opposing light towards each other through the use of
language and imagery.
Although the crow isnt explicitly stated in the poem, the author may
have reflected the crows persona when writing the poem, the crow being an
animal of higher perspective has displayed his high vision in the structure as
seen in the first stanza, which talks about the conflict of nature and living
things. The first stanza talks about the inner world inside an outside view
one sees, in this poem, when talking about the farms, who seem to be
spread out like oozing craters ;are actually inside the sheer sides, who are
further under the sodden moors, this explains to the readers the higher
vision of the poet through his structure displaying the hidden caves inside
caves that we most often ignore the details in our daily life. The power of
nature almighty seems to disrupt the flow of the stanza, displaying the
unknown power of nature of how it can appear anywhere and at anytime
when it is not wind it is rain, after this run-on line, the structure depicting
the higher vision is again taking its role, but this time in relation to humans,
talking about the doors inside which are beds and inside our sleep are the
dreams it cannot break. There are some things nature can do very well
such as damp our beds even when we have doors to protect us but there
are also things such as dreams that it cannot break. This ambivalent
viewpoint seems to favor both sides.
The second stanza is also conveying the concept of living beings
against nature. The 2th ,3rd and 4th lines are talking about living beings being
very soft and delicate thus the structure is as such that these lines are made
short, to convey the feeling of smallness against the 1 st line being, conveying
the existence of nature Between the weather and the rock. longer than the
ones talking about living beings conveying the feeling of its dominance over
the living. The last two lines of this stanza are the longest to show the
ultimate power of the humans against nature, giving these last two lines
the most words, human should be proud enough to hold off the sky above
their heads and that even after all of natures mightiness, it is we that walk
on the hills.

The third stanza has all balanced lines to convey the feeling of
stability between the forces of nature and the living. The contrast of winning
and losing is seeming to take turns between the two forces of creation for
example in the 1st line of the third stanza is talking about the buttoned from
blowing mist, visualizing the wind being so chilly, that humans need to
button up, here nature is winning alternatively in the 2nd line of the same
stanza, humans are winning as they walk the ridges of ruined stone.
Overall in order to emphasize the battle of life between nature and living
things, the whole poem is in alternate rhyme schemes example of moors
and doors or shake and break, to show that this is a constant battle in
which both sides win and lose
Language is another tool used to bring out the conflict between nature and
living things. The fragile nature of living things is described through the
poets careful choice of words example delicate feet, bony backs to
convey the feeling of hopelessness against these natural forces. The use of
adjectives being used of verbs, is another unique style of Hughes writing
using lit in order to convey the imagery of light, heat and fire. The
advantage of doing so is that it brings out more than one images in the
readers mind and hence leads to broader thinking skills.
