If people were all of one race, there would be no discrimination Do you agree?

Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of

people based on their belonging to a certain group rather than on their merits.
Race is a social construct and more than often it is defined as a group of people
having the same identifiable features such as the colour of their skin. When put
together, racial discrimination is the abusive or aggressive behaviour towards
members of another race, spurred from intolerance and hatred for them. Racial
discrimination is seemed to be one of the form of discrimination as it was present
since the time of imperialism and colonialism in Europe. It is conceded that if
people were all one race, there would not be any discrimination in the name of
race but it does not mean that there would not be discrimination at all. There are
many forms of discrimination and racism is just one of them Sexism. Classism
and Ableism are also forms of discrimination. In fact, George Aiken has once said,
If we were to wake up some morning and find that everyone was the same race,
we would find some other causes for prejudice by noon. Hence I do not agree
that if people were all one race, there would no discrimination.
Some may argue that if all people were one race, there would not be any visible
racial difference, i.e. skin colour, which is often the trigger for racial
discrimination. It would then considerably reduce a lot of prejudice and
discrimination in the society. History has many instances of racial oppression and
they still exists today. The horrific Charleston mass shooting earlier this year in
June is an apt example of how terrifying it could be when races are intolerant of
each other However, it is not always true that people of the same race would not
discriminate each other as the root cause of discrimination itself is not based on
race but rather different societal norms and beliefs. For example Eastern
Americans and Western Americans still discriminate each other despite having
the same skin colour and other similarities pertaining to race. Eastern American
like Western Americans, are whites who suffer from a much lower economic
status. They are backward in thinking and face many problems fitting in to the
society. They have low employment rates and hence are obliged to become
thieves or hooligans to survive. Some of their people such as the Romani people
or gypsies are greatly frowned upon as they are infamous for dabbling into
black magic and curse those insult them. While whether these alterations are
true is questionable, it is highly unfair to make gross generalisation on the whole
of Eastern Americans.
Even if people were all one race, differences such as such as the type of gender
will still cause discrimination. In this age and day, socially constructed gender
roles are still imposed on both men and women. Men are faster and stronger
while women are programmed to find good providers and to care for their
offspring , and that is manifested in a more nurturing and docile manner .Women
are crudely stereotyped to be more empathetic and better consensus seekers.
Such stereotypes has women facing discrimination in terms of employment
opportunities such as glass ceiling in terms of pay and career, limited political
participation ,and access to education and healthcare . Furthermore it is not also
women who face gender inequality but men too. Nursing school have tried hard
to recruit men in the past few years with negligible success .Pre-school such as
Kindergarten generally do not have men working. The idea of them being caring

individuals and picking up jobs that are societally constructed for women is
deeply frowned upon. Hence even if people were all one race, gender inequality
would have given rise to discrimination.

Differences in socio-economic class also results in discrimination where a certain

group of people may abuse, whether verbally or physically, another group of
people who are of lower status. Such differences are identifiable via markers
such as ones family background, ethnicity, and choice of clothing etc. These
markers are then used to judge a persons social placement within society and
the perceived value of that placement. These perceptions and judgments are
damaging because they are often used as a way of devaluing people that are
thought to be of lower status. For example, 2 in 3 Malays and 3 in 5 Indians have
faced discrimination at least at some point while applying for jobs in Singapore. It
was also concluded that discrimination was more often perceived by minorities,
those who were less educated, from lower socio-economic status backgrounds.
As such, it is undeniable apart from ones race, there are other factors such as
classism that could lead to discrimination.
Differences in religion can also lead to discrimination. Religious discrimination is
unequal treatment of an individual or group based on their beliefs. Racial
prejudice stem from the difference in culture and tradition across different
religions and when different religious groups cannot accept and tolerate each
others way of life they discriminate against each other. An example would be
the ethnic cleansing in Burma which has been going on for the recent years
where the Buddhists and Muslims dont see eye to eye due religious differences.
Muslims are kidnapped, tortured or killed as their religion is not accepted in
Myanmar. Recent reports have also warned that Rohingya women who were
taken hostage at human-trafficking camps in Thailand and Malaysia have
been gang-raped by their kidnappers. Hence this is evident that even if people
are of the same race, there would be other causes on which people discriminate
against each other.
