CLASS REVISION WEEK-9 April - 15 April

1. Review the BBC session with Dr. John Campbell on the final examination especially if you
were not present at the time and even if you were unless you took notes, you should review again
and this time take notes as you can pause and rewind at your leisure.
2. Revise your reading materials carefully, and only use those materials suggested to be used.
Old secondary school books might not be your best bet because some of them would have old
ideas in them that we have sought to disavow in this course.
3. Ask any questions re: Final Examination here and I will seek to give an acceptable response.
4. Ask any questions re: the course here and I will seek to give an acceptable response.

Course Themes
1. History as a discipline is a subjective undertaking. We need to understand this point very
carefully as we often think that what we read or were taught about the past is the "truth". This is
not always the case.
2. Historians use a definite methodology in order to limit (not eliminate) subjectivity issues.
While it is true that we cannot ever totally eliminate our subjectivity we can learn to control it or,
make it transparent through our use of established academic methodologies.
3. Civilisations vary throughout the world and therefore cannot be compared. This is a very
important issue as we often think that our civilisation is the "best" or the "worst". This was the
attitude of the Europeans who came into the region at the end of the fifteenth century. As a result
of their inability to accept other cultures the native people (neoindians) were marginalised and
killed. We must take heed and not repeat this type of negative attitude.
4. To attempt to compare civilisations is wrong as this can only be done by using (consciously or
not) the standard of one civilisation as the basis for our comparison..
5. There is no such thing, in reality, as an uncivilised group or 'savage' people. We use these
terms to privilege our own perspectives and to create the context of otherness. Of course in this
context the other is always seen as less than ourselves.

6 The demographic diversity of the region was enhanced both by enslavement as well as
indentured schemes to the Caribbean.

7. The identity of Caribbean people emerges because of a number of factors. These factors are
not only biological, but are the result of historical, ethnic and political issues.
8. The diasporic individual has an enhanced sense of Diasporic Double Consciousness brought
on by the constant tug between identification with an ethnic homeland and identification with the
current place of residence.
9. The reality of colonialism and imperialism has meant that Caribbean states are not free to
decide their own destiny/identity.
10. The major tools of control (historically used by imperial governments to dominate the minds
of the Caribbean people), were rooted in religion and education.
11. The move to Caribbean respectability meant the removal of traditions and the adoption (and
elevation) of foreign ideas and ways of thinking about the Caribbean self.
12. Gender and culture are important issues and examinable themes that are important in the
second part of the Course.
13. Culture is learnt and passed on from one generation to another.
14. While many thinkers question the existence of a Caribbean culture (due to the difficulty
involved in defining it), the truth remains that we have a special way of life in the Caribbean, an
"ethos", that dictates how we interact with each other. This is enhanced even in our sporting
activities. For this reason cricket is not simply a "game" to Caribbean people.
15. Attempts at regional integration like Federation, Caricom, The Regional Court of Justice,
CXC etc are good because they again demonstrate the legitimacy of our unique cultural heritage
in the Caribbean.
