Take dry cleaning. Today it is a regular way to clean your best shirts or dresses. In 1946, it was
considered a marvel. Imagine! Cleaning without water! No mess, no fuss, no shrinkage!
Another revolutionary invention from the 1940s is the ballpoint pen. Now cheap and plentiful,
this reliable writing instrument was the product of decades of careful refinement involving
chemistry, engineering and printing experience. The man credited with its creation was Laszlo
Biro, a Hungarian Newspaper Editor, sick of smudging ink with his hands and tearing pages with
sharp pen nibs.

COTTON BUDS
History
Invented in the 1920s by a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang
- He saw his wife cleaning their babys ears with a piece of cotton stuck on a
wooden stick
- Initially named baby gays because the product was designed to keep babies
happy
- Dubbed the swiss army knife of the household medicine cabinet
There are three primary components involved in swab manufacture: the spindle or stick, which
forms the body of the swab; the absorbent material coated onto the spindle ends; and the
package used to contain the swabs.
Spindle
Spindles can be sticks made of wood, rolled paper, or extruded plastic. They can be made to
different specifications depending on the intended use. Personal care products are fairly small
and lightweight and are only about 3 in (75 mm) long. Swabs made for industrial use may be
more than twice as long and are typically made of wood for greater rigidity.

Intro - history of Q-Tips (Sepia toned? Old-timey dressing?)
- Hello everyone, today were gonna present to you a wonderful new invention,
and its called [SUPER: BABY GAY]
-
Wait...what?
Modern day
- Back in 1923, baby gays or cotton buds, as we now know them, were invented
by a Polish-born American named Leo Gerstenzang.
- He saw his wife clean their babys ears with a piece of cotton stuck on a wooden
stick, and felt there was a safer way of doing so.
- Gerstenzang was inspired to produce a one piece cotton-swab - thus, the cotton
bud was born!
- To market his new product, Gerstenzang started the Leo Gerstenzang Infant
Novelty Company.
-
In 1926, he changed the name of the product from Q-Tips Baby Gays.
- Eventually, the phrase Baby Gays was dropped and the product were simply
called Q-Tips.
- Today, everyone has cotton buds lying around the house, and without them, we
wouldnt even be able to hear things clearly!
- Whether you call it a cotton swab, a cotton bud or a q-tip, these little guys are
everywhere.
-
Speaking of which Have you ever wondered what the Q in Q-tip means?
- Our dear friend Leo [Holds up Leo cut-out] who invented them, called them Qtips, as in [SUPER QUALITY] quality tips.
- And he sure wasnt kidding! These fantastic little wonders arent just good for
keeping your ears squeaky clean - they have a ton of different uses too.
- Thats right, and just about anyone from any profession can make use of them in
their careers - from makeup artists right up to doctors themselves.

Uses of Q-Tips
1. Amazing Use #1: Forensics
Setting: Any indoor area w/ table
a. SUPER: Forensics. Wide shot. SH sitting down at a table facing the camera. H
walking around the table CSI INTERROGATION STYLE
i. SH: I TOLD YOU IM NOT GUILTY!
ii. H: The evidence doesnt lie! But you have one last hope! [Whips
something out]
b. Extreme close up: H holding a q-tip. Fanfare music!!!
c. SUPER: Taking DNA samples
d. Medium shot: SH doing a cheek swab
e. Fade to black. Wide shot. H returning to the scene
i. H: Congratulations, youre innocent and free to go!
f.
ii. SH: *Appears with first aid kit* Where does it hurt?!
iii. H: *Points at eyebrow and frowns*
iv. SH: *Examines* The cut is too small for me to use a huge piece of
wool, but luckily, I have THIS! *Whips something out*
c. Extreme close up. SH holding q-tip. FANFARE!
d. (Actually I'm wondering whether I should be the one falling down because I have
a reddish patching my knee, actually for this it's possible to have a skit thing where you
or I fall down first and then the camera faces us and we take turns to say so)
e. Medium shot. SH applying medicine on H. H turns to camera and explains:
i. H: Cotton buds are also an essential item in a first-aid kit. They
are great for cuts, scrapes, and minor bumps.
ii. SH: Cotton buds help you apply ointment or lotion with pinpoint
precision, while keeping your fingers away from the wound, reducing the
likelihood of infection.
Firstly, they can be used to correct eye makeup. If your eyeliner a little too thick, uneven, or just not
the shape you want, take a cotton swab and wet it lightly. Then twist the edge of the swab over the
parts that you want to reshape, and the q-tip will erase the eyeliner.
You can also use it as a makeup brush. Cotton swabs make for a great blending brush to smudge
eyeliner and blend out any harsh edges.
Furthermore, get the perfect brow shape with the help of a trusty cotton bud! Take a matte brown
shadow in the color closest to your brows and apply a bit onto your cotton swab, then blend over
your brow area. To clean up the shape, flip the swab and use the clean end to apply a bit of
concealer or makeup remover to clean up the shadow. This gives you with perfectly filled-in
eyebrows that arent overdrawn.
argue with the wonderful feeling of squeaky clean ears and crystal clear hearing? Use a cotton
bud to release and get rid of the gunk in your ears!
Conclusion
(I Guess the closing shot can be conventional where it's two of us in front of a white wall and we
take turns to conclude)
So, who would have thought the invention Leo Gerstenzang created 93 years ago would have
become an essential feature in our daily lives? It is now a common household item found all
over the world, and used by millions from different countries!
That's right, but don't look down on it as a boring or insignificant item though, there are still
many interesting uses for it, such as in forensics or make-up. We hope you've learned much
more about the Q-Tip today, thank you for listening.
