PANELS MOD 57244, 57245, 57246

REVISION REASON:
This revision No. 1 is issued to:
Include MOD references and implementation rank, for production aircraft
Add reason for non mixability between HFP PN 4E33xx and 4E46xx series
Update the PN cross reference table

1. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this article is to provide operators with the necessary information to enable replacement of the heated
floor panels (HFP), Part Number (PN) 4E33xx, 4E40xx and 4E47xx series with new Titanium HFP PN 4E46xx series.

2. BACKGROUND:
2.1 Heated Floor Panels PN 4E33xx series

The combination of sixteen (16) Heated Floor Panels PN 4E33xx series and the new defined floor panel PN F5367xxxxxx
were introduced in the door 1, 2, 3 and 4 (LH and RH) areas on A330/A340 family aircraft, as a product improvement further
to airlines indications of too low temperatures on such areas.

Picture 1.: PN 4E33xx Aluminum HFP installation

Airbus has been receiving reports of Aluminum HFP (Part Number PN 4E33xx series) delamination and corrosion.
Several other reports have shown cases of damaged panel with presence of burnt holes on the inner aluminum
plate.
As a consequence the affected Heated Floor Panels lose their heating function, thus affecting the temperature level
at the doors and galleys areas. Flight diversions have been reported due to overheating of HFP located at door 2
LH or due to a burning plastic smell with an unusual high temperature of the cabin floor in the door 4 LH area.
Corrosion and delamination were found at the aluminum sheets of the HFP, mainly located at the edges and the
outer fastener bore holes. The flanges of the HFP are delaminated in between the Aluminum sheet, with
possibility of moisture ingress in that area. Findings are due to:
Damage of the surface protection mainly at the edges and in bore holes
Moisture ingress between the HFP and the honeycomb floor panel
Galvanic corrosion between heated aluminum plate and adjacent carbon fiber panels

Corroded and delaminated panels are not repairable.

Further to the above-mentioned issues, Airbus initiated the development of new integrated composite heated floor
panels with an aluminum top layer, with PN 4E40xx and 4E47xx series.
2.2 Heated Floor Panels PN 4E40xx and PN 4E47xx series

Picture 3.: PN 4E40xx and PN 4E47xx Aluminum HFP build-up

Note: Aluminium HFP PN 4E47xx series have the same design as the 4E40xx series except that they are FAR 25.856 (a)
compliant. To fulfil the FAR 25.856 (a) requirements, the Epoxy adhesive from vendor Stycast is replacing the foam
adhesive (Spray, vendor: 3M) and an additional stainless steel foil is installed between the lower surface of the panel and
the insulation foam.
Despite improvements, Airbus has been receiving few reports of Composite HFP corrosion, on PN 4E40xx series, but to a
lesser extent than on Aluminium HFP PN 4E33xx series.
The system, with HFP PN 4E40xx and PN 4E47xx series, is connected to the Ice Protecting Control Unit (IPCU), which
allows identification of a faulty panel via a class III Centralized Fault Display System (CFDS) message (for
instance: "252751-HEATR 3xx/IPCU FWD14DS" or "252751-HEATR 4xx/IPCU AFT16DS").
Corrosion was found at the aluminum sheets of the HFP, mainly at the edges and the outer fastener bore holes. Findings
are due to:
Damage of the surface protection mainly at the edges and in bore holes
Galvanic corrosion between heated aluminum and carbon fiber plates, bridges are created
through attachment points.

Picture 4.: Corrosion at the edges and the outer fastener bore holes
Corroded panels are not repairable.

2.3 Temporary solution for HFP, pending the availability of PN 4E46xx series
When a HFP is reported inoperative or regulating too hot, it is recommended to perform the Operational Check of the
Door Area Heating System by using the Test Button on each Control Unit as per Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM)
25-27-00-710-801 (for HFP PN 4E33xx) and Bite Test of the Door Area Heating System as per AMM 25-27-00-740801 (for HFP PN 4E33xx, 4E40xx and 4E47xx).
When a failure in form of overheat or corrosion (visually detected) of the panels is identified, three possibilities
are proposed up to availability of the Titanium HFP PN 4E46xx series:
a)

When the structural integrity of the affected panel is still intact, deactivate the heated floor panel system for
this door prior the aircraft departure by pulling and securing all circuit breakers associated to the system as
per AMM 25-27-00-040-801 Deactivation of the Heating Floor Panels and Aircraft Schematic Manual
(ASM) 25-27-00 Schema 01.

b) For HFP PN 4E33xx series: When panels are in a shape that they will no longer support mechanical
loads, deactivate the system via the respective circuit breakers and replace the corroded heated floor panels
by locally manufactured dummy panels from the same size made from al2024 or al6061 with a thickness of
3mm or 0.125inch.
c) Replace the heated floor panel (HFP) with the same PN of HFP.
For HFP PN 4E33xx, when the HFP system is deactivated, the Maintenance Planning Document (MPD) task 252700-01-1
DOOR AREA HEATING SYSTEM (interval '2C') shall no longer be applied.

3. DESCRIPTION OF TITANIUM HEATED FLOOR PANELS PN 4E46xx SERIES

New developed heated floor panels consist of a composite base plate on which a heater foil and titanium cover sheet
are laminated (Titanium HFP top plate instead of Aluminum as on PN 4E40xx and PN 4E47xx series).
Additionally, the edges of the panels are specially protected.
These laminated panels eliminate the corrosion issue, as primarily reported on HFP PN 4E33xx series.

Picture 5.: PN 4E46xx Titanium HFP buildup

In production, these new Titanium HFP PN 4E46xx series are introduced through:

MOD57244 for A330/A340 with a first implementation on

o MSN925 (for A330-200)
o

MSN928 (for A330-300)

o MSN938 (for A340-300)
