March 2016

Dear Parents
As you know, every year in the Senior High School there is a Prizegiving Ceremony, held in April,
when we honour students for their academic ability and progress. This ceremony is a very grand
occasion, which the prizewinners will always remember. Each time this event is held, strict criteria are
applied in choosing the winners. I thought it would be in your interest to know the criteria applied
in each subject.
The criteria are as follows:
In English, French,
Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Arabic & Islamic
Studies.

Results of examinations, practical assessments if appropriate, other

tests, classwork marks, and homework marks throughout the year. If
there is a tie, students who play an active and positive role in class as
well as displaying consistent effort, along with class teacher and HOD
recommendation, will become the prizewinner. PLEASE NOTE THE
WINNER IS NOT CHOSEN ON EXAMINATION RESULTS
ONLY.

Business Studies

previous academic year), practical assessments if appropriate, other
tests, classwork marks, and homework marks throughout the year. If

well as displaying consistent effort, along with class teacher and HOD
recommendation, will become the prizewinner. PLEASE NOTE THE
WINNER IS NOT CHOSEN ON EXAMINATION RESULTS
ONLY.

recommendation, to become the prizewinner. PLEASE NOTE THE

class and display consistent effort and gain the class teacher and HOD
recommendation, to become the prizewinner. Factors such as effort,
genuine interest in the subject and engagement in class will be
considered. Therefore the selection is not based solely on exam
results and thus first place in the mid-term examination will not
necessarily guarantee the prize.
For Year 10: there will be two prizes, one for Year 10 accelerated, and
one for Year 10.
For Year 11 there will be TWO prizes, one for Year 11AS and one for
Year 11.
For Year 12 there will be one prize. It will be given to the pupil showing
the most promise and commitment to their studies, whether it be for AS
or A2 Mathematics.
For Year 13 there will be TWO prizes, one for A2 and one for Further
Mathematics. As with Year 12, these prizes will be awarded on overall
class work, homework and attitude standards.
In Drama

In Years 7 13, the prize will be awarded for the highest standard of
excellence in class and for making the greatest contribution to dramatic
activities within the school e.g. the Senior School play and/or extracurricular drama clubs. The ability to be a great leader, actively
encourage others, demonstrate unwavering subject commitment and be
a dynamic and charismatic performer will greatly determine who will
receive the prize.

In Social Studies

Prizes awarded for a very high standard of work throughout the year,
including contributions to display work, good examination results,
assessments, project work if appropriate, along with a positive attitude
within the class.

History

The aggregate mark from term 1 assessments and the December exam
will be of fundamental importance in determining the prize winner.
However, ultimately the award will be at the discretion of members of
the department and factors such as effort, genuine interest in the subject
and engagement in class will be considered. Therefore the selection is
not based solely on exam results.
