HYDRAULIC FLUID

Hydraulic system has much advantage as power sources for operating various a/c used. It have
many advantage
1. Light weight
2. Easy installation
3. Simplification of inspection
4. Minimum maintenance requirement
Hydraulic operations are also 100% efficient with negligible loss due to fluid friction.
The hydraulic systems liquids are used primarily transmit and distribute force to various units to be
actuated. Liquids are able to do this because they almost incompressible they also act as a lubricating
medium, to reduce the friction between moving parts and carrying away some of heat.
PROPERTIES OF HYDRAULIC FLUIDS-

1. Low viscosity
2. High viscosity index
3. High flash point
4 High fire point
5. High chemical stability
Types of fluids-there are three types of hydraulic fluids used
1. Vegetable base (MIL-H-7644)
2. Mineral base (MIL-H-5606)
3. Phosphate ester base (SKYDROL)

IDENTIFICATION AND PROPERTIESMIL-H-5606- It is basically kerosene type petroleum fluid . Its color red. They are used in many
systems especially where fire hazard is comparative it less corrosive and less damaging to certain
parts than the other type of fluid .It having good lubricating properties and additives to inhibit
foaming. It is quite stable chemically and have little viscosity change with temperature and system
using this fluid may be flushed with naphtha, varsol, or Stoddard solvent. Neoprene seals and hose
may be used. This type of fluid is also flammable .It is mostly used in landing gear system
Phosphate ester baseIt is very fire resistant but not fire proof under certain conditions it will burn .It color green
/purple/amber. The continue modification of this fluid specification has resulted in utilization of type

I ,II ,III ,IV. Mostly we used type IV are SKYDROL LD-4&500B-4. type are classified in two class
Class I- Low density and offer weight saving (LD-4)
Class II-process handling characteristics that are beneficial in some a/c.
Seals gaskets and hose used with it are made of butyl synthetic rubber or Teflon fluorocarbon resin.
Fire resistant fluid will soften and dissolve many types of paints and lacquers
PRECAUTIONS
1 Always use correct type of fluid
2. Make certain that hydraulic fluid and fluid container are protected from contamination.
3. Never allow hydraulic fluid of different kind to become mixed
4 Do not expose fluid to high heat or open flame
5. Avoid contact with fluid, although the mineral base do not cause any irritation if SKYDROL skin
contact occur, wash the fluid off with soap and water
6. Wear protective gloves and face shield whenever handling phosphate ester base fluid.
