Good morning (afternoon) first grade students. Today we have the opportunity to read a
story about a little mouse that started kindergarten. (Anticipatory Set)
First, we will review our site words and words we have been learning about all week that
go along with this story. (Review)
The teacher will then put up her good morning message and have the students write the
message in their morning message books.
After the students review the morning message and go over the sentence and edits
correctly.
After the morning message the teacher will begin to talk about the book Chrysanthemum.
The teacher will open to the first page and ask the students if the parents are happy their

The teacher will then begin reading and stopping at appropriate areas to ask questions
about the story.
The teacher will ask the students who Chrysanthemum is.. Who the bully is.. and what
emotions are Chrysanthemum feeling in the story.
The teacher will then read on and stop at appropriate spots asking the students questions.
After the book is finished, the teacher will ask the students what the book was about. Did
Chrysanthemum feel sad about her name? Did Chrysanthemum want to change her
name? Is Chrysanthemum a name for a flower? (Assessment of Background Knowledge)
Chrysanthemum did not like her name after going to school. She wanted to change her
name to fit in. Chrysanthemum is a mouse in the story and a flower in real life.
(Anticipated Responses)
If no student raises their hand the teacher will then show some pictures in the book to
help refresh the students memories.
If any students have any additional questions about the story they can do so now.
Their journals will be handed out to them so they can draw a mouse and write two
sentences about what they read in the story. (Purpose Setting)

Presentation:
14 The teacher will use a pointer to point to the morning message.
15 The teacher will then hand out their morning message books and have the students write
their sentences and edit it correctly.
16 The teacher will then explain the importance of writing morning messages.
17 . The teacher will instruct the students to close their morning message books and put on
their desk their reading notebooks. (Input)
18 Every student will hear the story and if there is a word they do not understand they can
put their thumb up or down. (Checking for Understanding)
19 The teacher will then explain the centers and how they all incorporate with the story
Chrysanthemum. (Input)
20 Throughout the story the teacher will ask questions about Chrysanthemum and discuss
her feelings and different self esteem questions. (Checking for understanding)
21 The teacher will then ask the students questions like would Chrysanthemum like her
name if she did not have Victoria in her class? (Checking for understanding)
22 After the story is finished the teacher will leave the book out for the students to look at
the pictures or re read anything they want.
23 The teacher will perform every activity in every center so the students know what to do.
(Modeling)
24 After the teacher models every center the teacher will then ask the students if they
understand. (Checking for understanding)
Guided Practice:
25 The teacher will make a group of four to five students for each center.
26 Then the teacher will then go to group 1 and have them do the center with her, in the
meantime the other groups will have to write a short story about if they went to school
how they would feel if their name was Chrysanthemum. This will be an independent
writing assignment and they can use their site words.

27 The first center will be the self esteem center the four to five students will work
together and write one self esteem word on a poster board where they can hang them up
around the classroom. Some self esteem words will be written in the front on a poster
board for help. The students will create the posters and then write the word and describe
their classmates. They then will write in their journal why self esteem is important.
28 While the one center is writing self esteem importance and another group is writing about
if their name was Chrysanthemum, the teacher will call the second center up and they
will work on the math center. (If the students are done they can draw and color a mouse)
In this center they will have colorful sticky notes and write kind words on them. After
writing the kind words they will put the notes all over the center. When they finish with
the first step they will then take out their math notebook and make a chart. We will
compare the colors turning the sticky notes into math problems.
29 For the last center, it is the science center. The students will be growing their very own
Chrysanthemums. In this center there will be a plastic bag with soil in it. The plastic bag
will be clear so the students can look at the plant process and record it daily. The teacher
will then talk about the plant parts and what plants need to live. After planting the seed
the students will work on two worksheets that discuss the plant and its parts.
30 For advance students they can use bigger words and have harder math problems.
Closure:
31 The teacher will have the students put all their worksheets in their home folders.
32 The teacher will then ask the students what they had learned today. (Anticipated
responses) We learned about a mouse. We learned about self esteem words. We
learned about the life cycle of a plant. (Summary of major points)
33 If no one raises their hand the teacher will then point to all the posters and sticky notes
around the room.
34 The teacher will tell the students how important self esteem is. She will tell the students
how important it is to love yourself and others. The teacher will then tie all the centers
together and have the students look at all their work and each others. (Trying coherent
parts to a whole)
35 After looking at their work they can complement one and other.
36 The teacher will tell the students what they learned today will be useful for tomorrows
lesson. Tomorrow they will read another book similar to Chrysanthemum, watch/record
the growth of the plant, and tell the students that on Friday they will be writing a story!
