TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR SUB-CONTRACT WORK OF THERMAL, SOUND
AND FIRE CLASS INSULATION OF THE VESSEL - 11184
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.
SCOPE OF WORK :
1.1
The specification herein described with Thermal, Sound and Fire Class Insulation of the
vessel under construction in Shipyard.
1.2

The insulation work including pin welding is to be carried out as per the latest laid down
insulation practice under Shipyard inspection and follow safety norms.

1.3

The work is to be carried out as per drawings issued along with the specification and to the
satisfaction of HSL, IRS, DNV and Ship Owners. The thicknesses at various bulkheads,
decks, deck heads are to be followed as stipulated in the drawings to maintain required
temperatures inside the rooms during heat balance tests and also noise level tests at the
time of commissioning, thereafter during the guarantee period of the vessel.

1.4

To arrange inspection of work for the satisfaction of Shipyard personnel, Owners, Class at
different stages. A record of inspection is to be maintained by the contractor and produce
the same for obtaining completion certificates and arranging payment.

1.5

The contractor shall execute within the price quoted during or after completion of
insulation, any other job connected with insulation to improve the performance and
workmanship as may be found necessary whether such jobs are included or not in the
specification. Shipyard reserves the right to make minor alteration in design for
improvement and for any other reason arising out of circumstances.
Due to some Co-ordination jobs etc., some times small areas of Insulation laid may have to
be removed and refixed. Such areas are to be carried out by the contractor with in the cost
of original contract value with out claiming extra cost.

1.6

The work shall be carried out by the contractor in close co-operation with Shipyard
departments and other contractors on board the ship.

1.7

All materials under the contractors scope shall be brought in Shipyard one month prior to
commencement of work on board the ship.

1.8

The job shall be carried out under the supervision of OA Departments to that effect, for the
purpose of payment of bills. Contractor has to maintain a record of inspection carried out
by OA Department / Owners / Class at different stages of works as may be required by the
concerned for the purpose of certification for payment of bills.

1.9

Contractors shall be responsible to make judicious use of the materials supplied by


Shipyard and shall maintain a record of materials drawn and the areas where these
materials are used. The same shall be shown to the concerned before drawing successive
quantities.

1.10

Contractor should deploy skilled workman, supervisors and Engineers to perform good
workman ship

2.

QUANTUM OF WORK:
The following are the approximate areas of different types of insulation to be carried out.

Payment will be made on the actual measurements jointly taken by Contractor, OAD
department.
2.1 FOR THERMAL ACOUSTIC INSULATION:
2.1.1 The estimated quantity required for Thermal/Acoustic insulation is as follows:
a) Thermal Insulation: 1000 x 600 x 50mm, 45 kg/m3
b) Acoustic Insulation: 1000 x 600 x 50mm, 45 kg/m3

- 3840 m2.
- 4870 m2.

2.2 FOR FIRE CLASS INSULATION:


2.2.1 The estimated quantity required for Fire Class insulation is as follows:
a) A15 Fire Class Insulation: 1000 x 600 x 50mm, 45 kg/m3
b) A30 Fire Class Insulation: 1000 x 600 x 50mm, 45 kg/m3
c) A60 Fire Class Insulation: 1000 x 600 x 50+30mm, 100 kg/m3

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF WORK :

3.1

Total insulation works to be carried out as per drawing.

3.2

CLEANING OF SURFACE :

- 4320 m2.
- 2350 m2.
- 8240 m2.

All steel surfaces including frames, stiffeners, brackets and beams over which insulation is
to be laid are to be cleaned and primed with one coat of ZSP primer/Approved Primer by
HSL before releasing the areas to insulation contractor. The burnt areas due to pin
welding and any damaged areas during the execution of work shall be mechanically
cleaned and primed by the contractor.
3.3

BRIEF LAYING PROCEDURE FOR VARIOUS TYPES OF INSULATION :

3.3.1 THERMAL, SOUND AND FIRE CLASS INSULATION ON WALLS AND


CEILINGS :
The extent of insulation and various methods of laying for wall and ceilings shall be as per
the drawings.

In general, the insulation slabs of various thicknesses and densities are to be impaled over
the M.S. pins referred at item 2 above against the steel surfaces and held in place with clip
/ washers.
The Insulation of a deck or bulkhead shall be carried past the penetration, intersection or
terminal points for a distance of at-least 450mm in case of steel and Aluminum structures.
If a space is divided with a deck or a bulkhead of "A" class standard having insulation of
different values, the insulation with the higher value shall continue on the deck or bulkhead
with the insulation of the lesser value for a distance of at least 450 mm.
3.3.2

FIRE CLASS INSULATION OF AIR DUCTS :


The ducts penetrating fire class divisions shall be insulated with the respective type of
insulation to an extent of 450 mm on either side of division.

Also ducts requiring Fire Class Insulation to be provided with Fire Class Insulation.
Details of Insulation over ducting will be similar to Bulkheads/Deck and areas are included
in the quantum of work in Fire Class Insulation.
3.4

Weight recording of all materials that are taken on board and used shall be
maintained as per weight recording procedure and a copy of the record is to be sent
to Drawing Office through the supervising department periodically.

4.

SCOPE OF SUPPLY OF MATERIAL AND WORK BY SHIPYARD :

4.1

Shipyard will supply


a) Insulation slabs.
b) Stud pins and washers (clips).
c)

Primer for touch ups, and scheme paints as per para 3.2.

d) Lighting, Power and Crane will be supplied depending on their necessity


and availability so long as their supply does not interface with normal work of the
Shipyard.

Staging Materials are in HSL scope and will be supplied on returnable basis. Staging
required for the work is to be arranged at site by the Sub-Contractor.

SCOPE OF SUPPLY OF MATERIAL BY CONTRACTOR:


All materials other than supplied by Shipyard, that are required for carrying out the job
satisfactorily, shall be arranged by contractor such as :
a) Insulation pin spot welding Machine / Electrodes, tools and other accessories for
carrying out the job satisfactorily.

6.

GUARANTEE :
Contractor shall guarantee successful performance of the insulation for a period of 12
months from the date of delivery of the vessel and agree to repair / rectify / relay the
complete insulation, if any defect in workmanship or quality is noticed during the
guarantee period. They may also furnish further guarantee of one more year for the areas
if rectified, from the date of completion of such rectification.
