Heat Pump Water Heaters

Applied to Commercial Kitchens

The Technology

Commercial Heat Pump Water Heating

If you understand how air conditioners

work, then you are familiar with the basic
process that allows an air conditioner to
concentrate cold in one coil (inside the house)
and heat in another coil (outside the house).
Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners
are all examples of heat pumps.

Commercial Heat Pump Water Heating

Heat pump water heaters work using this

same principle.
Instead of dumping heat outdoors, as in an
air conditioner, heat pump water heaters save
the heat for useful purposeswater heating.

Commercial Heat Pump Water Heating

Heat pump water heaters do not create

heat, they move heat, which is significantly
more energy efficient than other technologies.
The efficiency can be 300 to 500 times
more efficient than standard gas and electric
commercial water heaters.

The Savings Story

Setting the Stage

Daily hot water usage: 1,000 gallons per day

Entering water temperature: 45 F
Final tank temperature: 140 F
Delta T: 95 F
Commercial Average Cost/kW: $0.0958
Commercial Average Cost/Therm: $0.931

Energy Formulas

Formulas
1. Gallons of use per day to Btu/day
Total gallons/day X 8.346 X T = Btu/Day
2. For our example:
1000 gallons/day X 8.346 X 95 = 792,870 Btu/Day

Heating Water: Heat Pump Water Heater

Formulas
1. HPWH Cost Per Day Formula:
Btu/day X Cost of Electricity kW/h = $/Day
3413 X COP X Standby Loss %
2. HPWH Cost Per Day Example:
792,870Btu/day X $0.0958 kW/h
3413 X 3.5 X .95

= $6.69/Day

Heating Water: Electric Resistance

Cost per Day Electric Water Heating:

1. Electric Water Heater Cost per Day
Btu/day X Cost of Electricity = $/Day
3413 X Standby Loss %
2. Electric Water Heater Cost per Day Example:
792,870Btu/day X $0.0958 kW/h = $23.43/Day
3413 X .95

Heating Water: Natural Gas

Cost per Day Natural Gas Water Heating:

1. Gas Water Heater Cost per Day:
Btu/day X Cost per Therm
= $/Day
100,000 x System Eff. % X Standby Loss %
2. Gas Water Heater Cost per Day Example:
792,870Btu/day X $0.931Therm = $11.10/Day
100,000 x .70 X .95

Water Heating Cost Summary

Heat Pump Water Heater Cost per Day..$6.69

Electric Resistance Cost per Day$23.43
Natural Gas Cost per Day$11.10
Heat Pump Water Heater Cost per Year$2,442
Electric Resistance Cost per Year..$8,552
Natural Gas Cost per Year...$4,051

Water Heating Cost Summary

Electric Resistance Cost per Year..$8,552

Heat Pump Water Heater Cost Per Year...$2,442
Yearly Savings $6,110
Natural Gas Cost per Year...$4,051
Heat Pump Water Heater Cost Per Year...$2,442
Yearly Savings $1,609

Heat Pump Water Heaters also Provide Space
Cooling

But Theres More!!

But Theres More!!

Approximately 2 tons of cooling from the HPWH

will offset about 2 tons of building air conditioning

Cooling is Useful in Commercial Kitchens

For every ton of room air conditioning offset by the

HPWH, approximately 1.3 kW/hr is saved.

Cooling: Less Quantifiable Impact

Productivity: cooling on the cook line

reduces heat fatigue
