A-Z INTERNATIONAL TOOL CO.

HOUSTON, TEXAS

A BRIEF HISTORY
Founded in 1958, A-Z International began business with a
charter to supply superior products and services to the oil and
gas well drilling industry on a world-wide basis. The initial products were downhole milling tools which were marketed both
domestically and internationally. The bulk of A-Z's initial sales
were in Venezuela, more specifically, sales and service operations were centered in the Venezuelan states of Anzoategui and
Zulia which are the equivalent of Texas and Louisiana in the
domestic market. A-Z International Tool Company draws its
name from the first letters of these states.
In 1960, underreamers were added to the product line and
A-Z's domestic service operations were expanded to meet
growing industry needs. Casing cutters were introduced in 1964
which led A-Z to develop proprietary plug and abandon
methods for offshore wells and a variety of new tool systems for
the offshore drilling industry. Focusing engineering and operational talent on marine drilling needs eventually led to the
patented "One-Trip Cut and Recovery System" for recovering
subsea wellheads from the ocean floor.
A-Z's first international service center opened its doors in 1965
in Venezuela. Since that time, international service centers have
been founded in Scotland, Singapore, Brunei, Indonesia, China,
Egypt, Oman, Norway, and Angola.'Domestically the company
operates from several locations on the Gulf and Pacific coasts.
Enjoying a steady growth and profitability, the company
established its own product manufacturing operation in 1963 at
3317 West 11th Street in Houston, Texas, and has been headquartered at that location since. To meet market demands, A-Z's
Service Tool manufacturing capability and capacity have been
increasing steadily since 1963 and currently are housed in a
30,000 square foot facility in Houston.
Drilled-in permanent anchor piles were introduced by A-Z to
the floating drilling industry in 1958 and have been successfully

applied in most active offshore basins throughout the world. A-Z

pioneered drilled-in piling systems for both the offshore drilling
industry and the offshore construction industry and is the recognized "expert" in this field.
In 1975, A-Z was acquired by the Masco Corporation of Taylor,
Michigan. Masco's energy related group of companies and
divisions has since grown to include such organizations as Grant
Oil Tools, Drillex Systems, Inc./Redi-Drill, Mountain States Oil
Tools, MWL-Lindsey Completion Systems, Foster Oilfield Equipment Co., Arrow Oil Tool, Walker-McDonald, and Arrow Specialty
Products. Being a member of a group of energy related product
and service companies has strengthened and broadened
A-Z's capability to deliver superior, innovative products, systems,
and services to its customers.
In 1981 and 1982, A-Z International continued to demonstrate
its engineering leadership and product innovations. A-Z introduced a combination packer and whipstock designed to provide
a means of sidetracking in a cased hole. Named the Pack-Stodk,
this unique tool saves time and money by reducing the number
of trips needed to cut a casing window. Later in 1982, A-Z added
the A-Z Hole Opener to its line of drilling tools. Made entirely of
forged components, the A-Z line of Hole Openers enables A-Z to
offer its customers a complete line of hole opening and underreaming services.
With new tools such as the Pack-Stock, Hole Opener, and the
Dyna-Cut, A-Z's new explosive wellhead severing system, A-Z
International has continued expanding its capability to meet
industry needs. While the other Oilfield Service Companies have
been maintaining the status quo during the mid 80's, A-Z
International has continued its aggressive R&D efforts which
have led to innovative developments stated above as well as the
Mud Saver Valve and Hydraulic Junk Retriever.

TOTAL SERVICE PLAN

A-ZS TOTAL SERVICE PLAN FOR OFFSHORE OPERATORS

Six reasons why we are No. 1 on floaters, jackups and semisubmersibles:
One String of Tools One Package One Company One
Invoice One Operator One Responsibility and Total Service.
We are offering total service to make offshore drilling faster,
more efficient and more economical. With only one string of A-Z
Tools, you can now do all of the cutting, milling, pulling, fishing
and patching jobs that will ever be necessary.
And A-Z is the ONLY company that has all the tools necessary
to offer this ONE-PACKAGE service:
Marine Cutters Casing Scrapers
Marine Swivel
Pilot Mills
Underreamers
Junk Mills
Spears
Valumills
Casing Patches

Junk Baskets
Reamer Mills
Taper Mills
Rotary Shoes

Section Mills
Rotary Subs
Subsea Anchoring
Systems

And all of our tools are engineered to withstand the severe

service encountered in underwater operations
Beefed-up marine cutters that can cut 20", 30" and even 60"
pipe with varying wall thickness.
Marine spears that can be used with right-hand rotation to
release underwater connectors.
Marine swivels that can be used for abandonment, patching,
fishing and cutting, or for drilling, setting and cementing conductor pipe.
Special marine casing patch tools with extra long extension to
accommodate any amount of stretch.
Single and dual rock-type underreamers that can be used for
drilling large holes through small blowout preventers, or for
drilling in, setting and cementing anchor piling or conductor
pipe with one trip in the hole.
All of these add up to a compact package that will get the job
done faster and more efficiently for less money. By doing so
many jobs with so few tools, savings are multiplied:
LESS CAPITAL INVESTMENT
LESS INVENTORY

LESS MAINTENANCE COST

LESS STORAGE SPACE

By getting the complete package from one company, only

one service engineer is needed. A trained specialist who knows
every part of every tool and can operate all of the tools is
certainly the best approach to cutting, fishing and patching.
And if that is not enough, we are making it still easier to drill
offshore where the tab is running from $50,000 to $200,000 per
day. You can buy our tools outright, or you can rent or lease them
at a small monthly cost, as you prefer.
Expense them or capitalize them! It's all the same to us. We
want to design and tailor your next cutting and fishing string to fit
your needs one string of tools manufactured to do every
cutting, fishing, patching and directional job that you will ever
do!
If you will furnish us with the details of your casing program,
including the specifications on your subsea hangers and blowout preventers, our engineering department will study your
program and come up with a complete string of tools to fit your
particular needs. No charge for the Sales Engineering, of
course.

HOUSTON, TEXAS

A-Z "DYNA-CUT"EXPLOSIVE MULTI-STRING SEVERING SYSTEM

USE
The "Dyna-Cut" Wellhead Severing System is capable of
severing up to five (5) cemented strings of casing (7" - 9-5/8" 13-3/8" - 20" - 30") at once with no danger to the drilling rig, rig
personnel orthe environment.'' Dyna-Cut'' can be combined with
the conventional A-Z marine casing cutting tool package for a Dual
Plug & Abandonment System, which allows the small casing sizes
to be cut and pulled mechanically and the remaining casing strings
to be severed explosively.

ADVANTAGES
The "Dyna-Cut" charge filler is stored on the rig in separate
containers as aflammable liquid (Nitromethane) and as acorrosive acid (Diethylenetriamine). Both are biodegradeable and
are not combined until A-Z technicians prepare the charge
container just before lowering it into the well bore.
The exploding bridge wire (EBW) detonators contain no
primary explosive and can only be actuated by the A-Z firing
module, which is hand-carried to the rig by an A-Z technician.
There is no possibility of accidental detonation by other
sources such as radio signals, allowing the rig to maintain
full communications throughout the operation.
The "Dyna-Cut" system is safe and the method of storing,
handling and detonating the explosive charges makes the
system fool-proof.
This system can also be used to jar a subsea wellhead loose
from the ocean floor after all casing has been cut mechanically.
Occasionally friction or excess cement will prevent the wellhead from being retrieved. The "Dyna-Cut" charge will free
the wellhead for retrieval.

OPERATION
The "Dyna-Cut" Wellhead Severing System is shipped to the
rig in the offshore box with sufficient materials to assemble two (2)
charges. The firing control box and the firing module are handcarried by the A-Z service operator to the rig. The service operrator assembles the charge and mixes the chemicals the
chemicals are not explosive until they are properly mixed by percentage of volume. The charge can be lowered into the wellhead on
a sandline using guide wires or on a running tool using drill
pipe/stinger. The method illustrated is the sandline method.

A-Z MARINE CASING CUTTER

USE
The A-Z Marine Casing Cutter is builtto withstand extremeshock
encountered in cutting multiple strings of uncentralized conductor
pipe. Dueto the unique construction of thistool, the rugged cutter
arms expand outward up to 5 times the diameter of the tool body
and achieve maximum stability under all types of adverse cutting
conditions, including hard spots, eccentricity, interrupted cuts, eta.
For example, the 133/s" casing cutter measures only 11%"
diameter and cuts all ranges and weights of pipe through 60".

OPERATION
The A-Z Marine Casing Cutter is simple to operate. The tool is
run to the desired depth and slow rotation is started. The pumps
are turned on and, as the pressure in the tool increases, a piston
is actuated, moving the cutter arm into cutting position. Rotary speed
is accelerated and pump pressure is gradually increased until the
cutter arms have expanded to their maximum position. After
finishing the cut, the tool is retracted by simply shutting off the pumps
and picking up.

inner string, outer string and any intermediate strings.
*C-13-2-1, CX-13-2-1, C-16-2-1 body and bullnose are a single assembly.

NOTE:
1.) When cutting casing strings larger than 20", we recommend using an A-Z Four-Bladed Free-Wheeling Stabilizer. This tool is 17'/4" O.D. and features
replaceable stabilizer blades. By interchanging the blades, stabilization can be achieved in all sizes of pipe from 20" up to and including 60" diameter. See page
15 for specifications.
2.) We strongly recommend that the largest possible cutter be used for a particular size of casing. The large sweep cutter arms are for use in cases where the
casings are cemented together.

OPERATION

KEYED STOP RING RETAINER

The A-Z Spear is easy to operate. The spear is made up on

the bottom of the string and run into the hole. Thereupon the
string is carefully lowered until the nose piece of the spear
enters the fish. When the slips enter the fish, a sharp decrease
of string weight will be noted, indicating that the fish has been
entered.
When running the spear as a stringer type it should be
lowered several feet into the fish so that a firm grip on the pipe
will be maintained and also to reduce the tendency to split the
fish if severe pulling or jarring is encountered. When running the
spear as a bumper type, sufficient weight should be applied to
the string to insure that the bumper ring is resting solidly on top
of the fish.
Pick up on the string. This action causes the slip to spread
outward on the mandrel, biting into and securely engaging the
fish. The fish may then be pulled from the hole or may be jarred
repeatedly if necessary.
If, for any reason, the fish cannot be pulled or jarred from the
hole, drop the string sharply on the spear. Bumping down on
the spear will break the friction between the mandrel and the
slips, allowing the mandrel to move downward with relation
to the slips.
With the spear in this position, rotate the string one or two
turns to the right and pick up. Right hand rotation causes the
slips to remain in the released position, in which position the
spear may be withdrawn from the fish. The spear may be
re-engaged and released as many times as desired without
coming out of the hole.

The A-Z RSP 30 Marine Spear has a rugged heavy duty body.
It is a bumper type spear designed for engagement and pulling
of 30" casing. The slips arecarburized to ensure positive engagement of the fish. This tool has an integral packoff element which
seals against the casing I.D. when the slips are set. By sealing off
on the casing I.D., hydraulic pressure may be applied below the
tool which adds lifting force to the fishing string. It operates the same
as standard A-Z Marine Spears. The spear may be re-engaged and
released as many times as desired without coming out of the hole.
The RSP30 may be converted to a RSP 36 for workinSS" casing
by simply changing the slips and adding a bumper ring adaptor.
This conversion may be made without disassembly of the tool.

USE
The A-Z Marine Swivel is used on floaters to suspend the A-Z
Marine Casing Cutter in the hole and maintain it at the same
level during the cutting operation.
It is also used on jackups when running the A-Z Single Trip Cut
and Recovery System. The swivel can be seated on the casing
hanger or wellhead. With the use of the compensator the wave
action imposed on the vessel will not affect the vertical position
of the cutter.
The AZ Marine Swivel comes in two designs, the MSA-10 and
the heavy duty MSB-10.

CONSTRUCTION
THe MSB-10 is stronger than the MSA-10. In both tension and
torsion it is approximately twice as strong. For this reason we
strongly recommend that the MSB-10 be used in most deep
water applications especially where heavy seas, strong ocean
currents, and other adverse factors exist. As the water depth
increases, the eccentric motion of the drill string increases and
this, coupled with the fact that the vessel may at times be
misaligned with the center of the hole, imposes severe bending
and shock load on the swivel. The MSB-10 swivel is built to
withstand these loads.

ADVANTAGES
Insures smooth cut even in the roughest seas.
By accurately spacing out between the swivel and the cutting
tip of the arm, a cut can be made at a precise level within
fractions of an inch.

16

MSB-10

Sealed, oil-bath construction insures long, trouble free

operation and low maintenance costs.
Precision roller-type bearings take thrust loads up to
500,000 Ibs.
By simply changing adapters on the rig floor one size of swivel
fits all sorts of hangers from 51/2" up.

OPERATION
The A-Z Marine Casing Cutter is run on the bottom of the
string. The exact point of cutting can be determined by measuring from the swivel to the cutting tip of the arm. The proper size
of adapters for the casing hanger are then installed on the
swivel. The swivel is slowly lowered into the hole until it seats on
the casing hanger or well head and sufficient weight is set on the
swivel to allow the compensator to separate.
Slow rotation of the pipe is begun, usually from 10 to 20 rpm,
and the pumps are turned on. The housing of the swivel, seated
in the wellhead, remains stationary while the mandrel rotates
with the string and turns the cutter below.

ADAPTERS
The MSB-10 Swivel can be used with adapters for all sizes of
pipe from 133/s" to 30". In situations where smaller casing is
encountered (51/2", 7", 9%") the adapter is replaced with an
adapter sleeve and sub. In the MSA-10 swivel the adapter
sleeves and subs are only required when cutting 51/2" and 7"
casing.

USE
The A-Z Free-Wheeling Stabilizer is used in conjunction with
the A-Z Marine Cutter when cutting 20" or larger pipe. It is also
used in the A-Z Conductor Pipe System when setting conductor
strings of 100' lengths or longer.
When cutting 20" pipe and larger, the use of the A-Z Freewheeling Stabilizer insures a smoother, faster cut, especially
when two or more strings are cemented eccentrically with
respect to each other, resulting in an interrupted cut.

TOP STABILIZER
BODY

SLEEVE

ADVANTAGES
Blades remain stationary in pipe while string rotates.
Only one size body needed for all sizes of big-inch pipe.

BLADE

OPERATION
The A-Z Free-Wheeling Stabilizer is installed in the string
directly above the A-Z Marine Cutter. Since the sleeve of the
stabilizer is only 17V*" O.D., it can be run through a small rotary
to the spider deck level where the blades are quickly and easily
installed. It is necessary to remove only one bolt in order to
change each blade.

A-Z CASING PATCH

USE
The A-Z Casing Patch Tool is used to connect and seal 2 strings of casing of the same
diameter. Over a period of time, due to adverse well conditions, casing deteriorates and
becomes damaged beyond use. In many instances, it is possible to remove the upper portion
of the damaged casing and, by means of the patch tool, connect a new section of casing to the
bottom portion. In other instances, casing sometimes sticks when going in the hole and when
this condition occurs on a floater, then it becomes necessary to remove the upper portion of
the stuck casing and re-connect below the ocean floor suspension system by means of a
casing patch in order to continue normal operations.
ADVANTAGES
The A-Z Casing Patch is designed for use in land operations and also for use on jackups in
offshore operations. An alternate design with extension is also available for use on floaters.
The A-Z Casing Patch utilizes high grade alloy. Three packoffs assure a tight seal under
adverse well conditions.
OPERATION
The A-Z Casing Patch is simple to operate and maintain. The Casing Patch Tool is made upon
the bottom of the casing string and run into the hole until the bottom of the casing patch is a few
feet above the casing to be patched. The pumps are started and the hole is circulated clean.
Slow rotation of the casing string is then begun and the casing patch is slowly lowered until the
bowl of the patch engages the lower string and bumps up against the stop in the upper part of
the bowl. When the casing patch shoulders up, a definite indication can be noted on the
weight indicator. A strain is then taken on the casing string. The casing is then pressure-tested
after which normal operations are resumed.
For detailed operational procedure used in setting the casing patch on floaters, please refer to
Page 10 of this catalog.

CASING PATCH
DRESSING TOOL/PILOT MILL

A-Z TYPE R DRESSING TOOL AND PILOT MILL

USE
The A-Z Type R Dressing Tool and Pilot Mill has two uses:
1. It is used to smooth and bevel the top of a cut fish prior to
setting a casing patch.
2. It is used to mill stuck wash pipe, liners, casing, and screens.
-BODY ASSEMBLY

ADVANTAGES
For dressing, the bottom of the cutting element is dressed at
45. The resulting angle cut on the casing prevents damage to
the packoff elements in the casing patch.
The nose piece is provided with stabilizer blades to insure
proper centralization of the cutting element. The O.D. of these
blades is generally Va" less than the I.D. of the casing to be
milled.
The A-Z Type R Pilot Mill and Dressing Tool is extremely
versatile and, in special cases, can be used with over-size
cutting elements to cut several sizes of casing.
Cutting elements are easily changed on the rig floor.

One set of cutter arms will underream several sizes of hole

by simply changing gauge links and piston stop.
Cutter arms can be easily changed on rig floor. .
By combining two operations into one, the A-Z Dual Rock
Type Underreamer saves rig time when setting surface casing.
At the same time, by eliminating the need for large blowout
preventers, time to nipple up and tear down is greatly reduced.
In addition, the rental or purchase price of the large preventers
is eliminated.
The exclusive linkage feature of the A-Z Dual Underreamer
makes it possible, by simply changing gauge links and piston
stop, to use only one size cutter arm for all openings, a feature
which reduces cutter inventory.
In addition to a jet bit, the A-Z Dual Underreamer utilizes a jet
sub. Nozzles between the cutter arms and rock bit are so
directed that a jet stream of drilling fluid is in contact with each of
the underreamer cones at all times, cleaning these elements
and reducing the tendency to "ball up" in sticky formations.

OPERATION
The operation of the A-Z Dual Rock Type Underreamer is identical with that of the A-Z Rock Bit Underreamer described on
page 26 of this catalog except that a sufficient volume of fluid is
utilized to conform to good jet drilling practices.

A-Z BIG "M" HARD-ROCK UNDERREAMER

USE

TOP SUB

As drilling moves to greater depths, including the Continental

slopes and eventually the ocean basins, harder and harder
formations are in evidence. Sand, shale and gumbo have suddenly changed into hard rock. Result available underreamers were inadequate and failed to perform.
The Big "M" design is not based on theory alone. It is based
on thousands of runs and thousands of hours of actual downhole
experience. The big "M" Hard-Rock Underreamers have the
beef and guts to get the job done wherever and whenever they're
put to work. In Labrador. In the Mediterranean. In the North Sea.
Or any sea. It's the one underreamer that is tailored to meet the
demands of offshore operators everywhereon drillships, on
semi-submersible, on jackups and. platforms.

Figure 1 pinpoints the massive strength of the Big "M" Cutter

Arm as compared to that of a Dual Conventional Rock-Type tool
of the same diameter. For instance, the 16 "M" Arm is 86%
greater in cross section. The moment of inertia and section
modulus are each increased by 129%.
The U 16 Big "M" uses cones and bearings which are comparable to those used in a 143/i" O.D. rock bit, whereas those used
in the DDR 16 Underreamer are comparable to those of a 10%"
O.D. rock bit.
All of this adds up to:
1. 65% more cutter life.
2.150%-190% overall increase in arm strength.

SPADE
(ORBULLNOSE)

24

Hydraulics Stepped Up
But that's not all. To keep pace with this sharp increase in
strength, we've stepped up the hydraulics accordingly.
The piston diameter of the U 16 Big "M" is 8" with an effective
area of 49.03 square inches as compared to the DUR 16 piston
diameter of 51/2" with an effective area of 15.45 square inches.
The U 16 "M" is, therefore, capable of operating with approximately half the pressure required by the DUR 16 tool.

153

BIG "M" UNDERREAMER

A-Z BIG "M" HARD-ROCK UNDERREAMER

The U 13 "M" requires only about 40% of the

pressure required to operate the DUR 13.
The inside diameters of the Big "M" tools are
extra large.
Due to these larger I.D.'s and correspondingly
reduced velocities at equal flow rates, the Big "M"
tools have much less tendency to wash out than
conventional tools with smaller I.D.'s.
The larger I.D.'s of the Big "M" tools permit the
use of larger orifices.
At equal pressures, the larger orifices in the Big
"M" tools provide greater annular velocities which
in turn support greater weights and faster
penetration rates.
If one feature of the Big "M" tools stands out
above all others, it is the fact that recommended
weights are Vk times those recommended for
Dual conventional tools of the same diameter.
This is the big bonus which offshore operators
have needed. With twice the weight, "onbottom"
time can be cut by as much as 50%.
Trip Time Speeded Up
The A-Z Big "M" Hard-Rock Underreamers are
designed for fast tripping. These tools can be lowered
into the hole any desired speed and the cutter arms
will remain retracted at all timesa feature which
does not hold true for all competitive brands.
Big "M" Tools Easily Withdrawn From Hole
After completing the underreaming operation,
the pumps are turned off and the expanded cutter
arms are retracted into the tool body by means of a
spring. If, for any reason, the spring does not
retract the cutters, the tool is simply picked up
and, as it enters the casing, the cutter arms are
mechanically forced into the tool body and the
tool is withdrawn from the hole.
Two-Stack System Not Needed
The Big "M" Hard-Rock Underreamers are designed
to out-last and out-perform their predecessors by as
much as 2 to 1. That's why you do not need to consider
a two-stack system for deep sea drilling. With A-Z's
package of underreamers, all you need is a one-stack
system. The Big "M" will do the rest. This means a
savings of hundreds of thousands of dollars in capital
investment as well as eliminating one to three days' rig
time lost changing stacks when using the two-stack
system.

1. Utilizes standard rock bit cones for underreaming.

2. Underreams all formations.
3. One set of cutter arms will underream several sizes of hole by simply changing
gauge links and piston stop thus reducing inventory of cutter arms.
4. Digs like a rock bit medium formation cones are standard, but soft and hard
formation cones are available on request.
5. Smooth cutting action.
6. Utilizes larger, more rugged cone than dual underreamer.
Due to the construction of the A-Z Rock Bit Underreamer, a larger, more rugged cone
with larger bearings can be installed in this tool than in the dual rock-type underreamer.
For this reason, it is preferable to use the single-stage underreamer rather than the dual
underreamer when drilling in intermediate to hard formations. In fact, except in alluvial
and silt-type formations, it is recommended that a pilot hole be drilled first and the
underreaming performed in a subsequent operation. Since the cones and bearings are
larger in the single-stage underreamer, more weight can be carried on the tool resulting
in faster penetration rates and increased footage.
The A-Z Rock Bit Underreamer is furnished with a two- or four-way diamond point
spade which is used for wiping out bridges that may be encountered when going in
the hole.
Other underreamers require a large inventory of cutter arms for a full range of
underreamer hole sizes. The A-Z Underreamer requires only one set of cutter arms for a
full range. For example, in the 5%" O.D. underreamer, one set of cutter arms will
underream from 7%" through 121/4". The only requirement is that a set of gauge links be
ordered for each size of hole to be underreamed.
Cutter arms may be easily and quickly changed on the rig floor.
GRAVEL PACKING, CEMENTING, SETTING LINERS
When opening hole for gravel packing, cementing and setting casing liners, the A-Z
Underreamer makes a fast, uniform enlargement. Numerous caliper logs have attested
to the uniform hole diameter drilled with this tool. The clean side wall achieved by the
A-Z Underreamer assures no stuck liners, better cement bonding and uniform gravel
packing.

OPERATION
The tool is run to the desired depth and the rock bit cutter arms are raised to cutting
position by pump pressure. The velocity of fluid across a nozzle increases internal
pressure within the cylinder to move a piston which expands the cutter arms. Pump
pressure is gradually increased while the tool is rotating until the cutter arms have cut to
the maximum diameter. Weight is gradually applied and underreaming commences.
During the underreaming operation, the upper portion of the cutter arm pivots in the
body thus eliminating any weight on the cutter arm pins. After the hole is underreamed,
the pump is shut off and the tool is retrieved from the hole. Cutter arms are quickly and
easily changed on the rig floor. Notice that the Underreamer may be expanded and
retracted as often as desired without coming out of the hole.

MARINE ANCHORING SYSTEMS

A-Z MARINE ANCHORING SYSTEMS

A-Z International Tool Company has developed two types of

Marine Anchoring Systems. All of the systems are aimed at
reducing the high cost of drilling offshore. These two systems
are:
1. A-Z Permanent Anchor Pile Systems for drillships and
semisubmersibles.
2. A-Z Permanent Anchoring Systems for marine structures
such as templates, single-buoy mooring systems, and storage
tanks.
A-Z PERMANENT ANCHOR PILE SYSTEM
The A-Z Permanent Anchor Pile System is used to drill-in,
set, and cement anchor pilings for drillships,
semisubmersibles, and other floating structures. This method
requires only one trip in the hole to complete the entire
operation
ADVANTAGES:
Only one trip required to drill, set, and cement piling.
Eliminates the danger of losing the hole due to sloughing or
re-entry problems, risks which are encountered when
drilling and setting operations are conducted separately.
Eliminates the need for divers.
Installation technique uses standard drilling tools.
Anchoring time is reduced from days to hours.
Is effective in both soft and hard bottom formations.
APPLICATION
,
In many cases, the topography of the sea floor is such that
conventional marine anchors will not hold. This is especially
true in silt and gravel type bottoms where the anchors simply
plow up the sea bottom and never reach a formation which is
competent enough to hold fast. In other cases, the bottom is
too hard for the anchor to dig in. In either case, the A-Z
Permanent Anchoring System solves the problem and holds
the vessel on location, even under severe weather conditions.
In other cases, the presence of subsea structures such
wellheads, pipe lines, or communications cables may prevent
the use of conventional anchors. In these cases the precise
locating and minimal bottom disturbance of the A-Z drilled in
Permanent Anchor Pile provides an ideal solution.
