QUESTION 1
a) Given that F(x) = 2x3 + 5x2 - x - 6.
i)

Find p, q and r such that F(x) = (x + 2)(px2 + qx + r).

Factorise F(x)completely.
(1 mark)

iii) Solve F(x) = 0. Hence, obtain the Solutions for F(x + 1) = 0

b) The polynomial P(x) = 3x3 +mx 2 + n x - 2 has a factor of (3x + 2). It leaves a remainder
-12 when divided by x + 2. Determine the values of m and n.

QUESTION 4
a) Two particies of mass 2 kg and 5 kg on a smooth horizontal plane are connected by a
light rod. The 2 kg particle is being pushed by a force of 40 N acting downwards at 35 to
the vertical. Find
i)

the acceleration of the particies.

ii) the tension in the rod.


(2 marks)
iii) the total force of the particies exerts on the plane.
(2 marks)
b) A cable car of mass 1200 kg is pulled at a constant speed of 10 m/s up a smooth slope
inclined at an angle of 22.5 to the horizontal. Find the power exerted on the car.

c) Four particies A, B, C and D of mass m, 2m, 2m and 3m, respectively are rigidly joined
together by light rods to form a Square ABCD (top left: A, top right B, down right: C, down
left D) with all sides equal L. Find the moment of inertia of this System of particies (in
terms of m and L) about an axis:

along diagonal BD.

a) During the SEA Game a javelin was thrown at 45 to horizontal and hit a distance 73 m
away on the ground, which was the record for the event. Find
i)

the time the javelin reached the greatest height.

ii) the initial speed of the javelin.

iii) the greatest height travelled by the javelin.

b) A 0.2 kg metal ball strikes a solid ground with a velocity of 4 m/s that is normal to the
ground. It bounces away at a velocity 2.5 m/s, still normal to the ground. The bounce
lasted 0.15 s. Find
i)

the change in momentum ofthe ball.

ii) the impulsive force between the ball and the ground.

c) A partially loaded Airbus A380 airliner of 400 000 kg lands at 25 m/s . The engines apply
reverse thrust for 15 s to slow the plane to 19 m/s. Find

the deceleration produced.

iii) the time taken for the plane to stop if the same reverse thrusts is maintained.
