1. Unit, measurement and uncertainty (20 points)

Gold, which has a density of 0.698 lb/in3, is the most ductile metal and can be pressed into a
thin leaf or drawn out into a long fiber. (a) If a sample of gold with a mass of 29.34 g is pressed
into a leaf of 1.000 m thickness, what is the area of the leaf? (b) If, instead the gold is drawn
out into a cylindrical fiber of radius 2.500 m, what is the length of the fiber?
Hint: Convert into c.g.s. (1 lb = 453.59 gram; 1 in = 2.54 cm) . Determine the least uncertainty in
the density, mass, and thickness or radius, and then calculate the uncertainty in the area or
length value. Express the uncertainty in the area (A) or length (l) as an absolute value A or
l , as a fractional ratio A/A or l/l, and as a percentage A% or l%

2. Dimensional Analysis (10 points)

Consider a simple pendulum consisting of a massive bob suspended from a fixed point by a
string. Let T denote the time (period of the pendulum) that it takes the bob to complete one
cycle of oscillation. How does the period of the simple pendulum depend on the quantities that
define the pendulum and the quantities that determine the motion? (Do the dimensional analysis
to derive the relationship)

3. Vectors (20 points)

A. Displacement d1 is in the yz plane 63.0 from the positive direction of the y axis, has a

positive z component, and has a magnitude of 4.80 m. Displacement d 2 is in the xz

plane 30.0 from the positive direction of the x axis, has a positive z component, and has

magnitude 1.40 m. What are (a) d 1 d 2 , (b) d 1 d 2 , (c) d 1 d 2 d 1 5d 2 , and (c) the

angle between d1 and d 2 ?

B. In the product F qv B , take q = 3,

v 2.0i 4.0 j 6.0k and F 4.0i 20 j 12k

What then is B in unit-vector notation if B x B y ?
