What is a value?

5 Human Values
The root word of value is from the Latin word Valere which
means to be strong and vigorous. (Refer to Khanna, 2000, p 3 -15
for more in depth understanding of a value)

A Human Value is anything which gives worthiness or respect to

life. Anything which enhances lifes beauty and its sweetness may
be called a value. Honesty, tolerance, kindness and forgiveness, for
example, result in harmonious and pleasant living. Therefore they
can be classed as human values.

RIGHT CONDUCT (Dharma)

Dharma is characterized by holiness, peace, truth and
fortitude. Dharma is yoga, union, merger; it is Sathya (truth).
Its attributes are justice, sense control, sense of honour, love,
dignity, goodness, meditation, sympathy, non-violence: such is
dharma that persists through the ages. It leads one on to
universal love and unity. Dharma Vahini, p21

5 Human Values
LOVE (Prema)
The basis for the entire world is the Prema (divine love) of the Lord.
Love is the word which indicates the striving to realize the falsehood of many
and the reality of the One. Love identifies; hate separates. Love transposes
the self on to another and the two think, speak and act as one. When love
takes in more and more within its fold, more and more entities are rendered
as One. When you love me, you love all, for you begin to feel and know and
experience that I am in all. (SSS VII, p 473)

5 Human Values
NON VIOLENCE(Ahimsa)
Ahimsa (non-violence) is another phase of Sathya (Truth). When once you are
aware of the kinship, the oneness in God, the fundamental Atmic Unity, no one
will knowingly cause pain or distress to another.
SathyaSai Speaks 6 p.128
It (non-violence) does not mean merely not injuring a living being. You should
not cause hurt even by a word, a look or a gesture. Tolerance, fortitude,
equanimity these help you to be steady in Ahimsa.SathyaSai Speaks 10, p.307

PEACE (Shanthi)
When man thinks, speaks, and acts along virtuous lines, his conscience will be
clean and he will have inner peace. Knowledge is power, it is said. But virtue is
peace. - Sathya Sai Speaks 10, p 267
Now all things have gone up in value; man alone has become cheap. He has
become cheaper than animals; he is slaughtered in millions without any qualm
because of the terrific growth in anger, hate and greed; he has forgotten his unity
with all men, all beings, and all worlds. The contemplation of that unity alone can
establish world peace, social peace and peace in the individual. - Sathya Sai Speaks
4, p 287

TRUTH (Sathya)
The chief duty of man is to investigate the Truth. Truth can
be won only through dedication and devotion, and they are
dependent on the grace of God, which is showered on hearts
saturated with Love.
Sathya Sai Speaks 6, page1

Practice of the FIVE HUMAN VALUES
Sathya Sai Baba says:
Teachers have to be lifelong students, engaged not in mere study, but immersed in
practice, too. Only a lamp that burns can light other lamps. How can a flame that has
long been off light other wicks? Many teachers have now become dispirited and the
flame of their enthusiasm is spluttering. This is the result mostly of the multiplication
of desires. The great mission of the teacher and its obligations are often ignored.~
SSS XV, 31 Aug 1981
Constant Practice of human values by the SSE Teacher is a prerequisite in order to
elicit the human values from children. While interacting with children, great
attention must be paid to the cultivation of good conduct, good speech and good
thoughts. Calm, concentrated, unshaken attention should be observed by both the
SSE teacher and students. One should not be prone to sudden fits of anger, anxiety or
agitation.~Baba
