Tell us about your university experience, and what you consider to be your
greatest achievement since being at the University of Nottingham.
My experience with this truly global university has been nothing short of
fantastic. Being a student of business in-particular International Business, it is a
pre-requisite that I interact with people from different cultures, reflect upon the
interaction, learn about the cultural differences and effectively formulate
strategies based upon them. University of Nottingham apart from providing solid
grounding in theoretical aspects, also provide the platform for interacting with
people from different cultures and nationalities as it boasts a large and diverse
student community thus providing an all-around educational experience in my
case. The opportunity to be associated with this university which is recognized as
the brand leader of sustainability especially when I personally believe and
profess the goals of sustainability just makes me feel proud to take that extra
step and push my beliefs and do my part effectively.
One of my greatest achievement since being at the University of Nottingham,
would be the experience of taking part in the creative problem solving module,
leading the team and coming up with a novel business idea. This module as part
of its course completion requires the module takers to work in a group, identify a
commercial gap or problem and solve it by finding commercially viable solution.
The module is judged based on a written business proposal and business pitch in
front of potential investors. I and my team during the course were able to find a
commercially viable solution for one of the real life problems and pitch it
successfully in front of panel of investors. The business idea was received warmly
and highly appreciated by all the judges. My team was also credited with one of
the highest score in the module.
2. The theme of this years International Student Summit is focused around
the sustainable development goals of the UN. How will you use your place
to advance these goals and what skills will you bring? (300 words).
I am a person, who is of the belief that there is no true value to any innovation
until an entrepreneur builds a business model around it and cater it to the
demand of the consumers. The process of innovation in itself is mostly driven by
all the funding that comes in by an entrepreneur who sees future for that
innovation. To ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern
energy for all, it is of essence not only to bring forth new innovations but also
look into affordable ways to produce and make it available in the market. Only
then these innovations can be made to reach the common public especially in
the developing and under-developed countries.
I consider myself to be a bit of both, innovator and an entrepreneur. During my
bachelors (engineering) in the field of biotechnology, I was able to work on some
cutting edge research in the field of microbial nanotechnology. As of now, to my
credit have 3 publication in various leading national and international research
journals and a few others are currently under review. Apart from this I have also
made several paper presentation in various conferences. My current masters
degree is equipping me to fill in the entrepreneurial gap. Being part of this
summit, I am hoping to feed the knowledge seeking hunger of my
entrepreneurial side. Having said that I disagree with the opinion of many that
solar cells are going to be the solution and face of the energy crisis in the near

future and believe that the algae power cells are the solution we are looking for.
These algae can also double as the source of proteins thus ending hunger.

3. Name an environmental initiative that has interested you recently and

explain why?
Universities being the bridge between the present and the future need to make
efforts to mould environmentally responsible citizens and also contribute to their
local environment. With the combined total student population of around 43000
in University of Nottingham. It is very easy to lose track of its goals. Thus making
the Green-Initiative by University of Nottingham, very challenging but at the
same time much more rewarding. The University, through its initiative is not only
trying to be green on itself, but also encourages its student community to lead
a green life. The graduating student cohort every year is spreading the word and
taking the cause to a global level which cause the initiative to be of high impact.
From the time, one steps into the campus, it is easy to observe and feel the
initiative changing the world for better one step at a time. The University pushes
this green revolution by creating environmentally efficient building designs,
generation of energy from renewable sources, green IT projects, waste
minimization and
recycling, water conservation, energy usage reduction
processes such as low energy lighting systems, day-light usage maximization,
cutting down on air conditioners and most importantly raising awareness thus
encouraging behaviour changes. This initiative has already significantly cut down
its carbon foot print and it aim to further reduce its carbon foot print by 40% of
its 2009 base line in the period 2015-2020.
