Date/time of session: Friday 29th January 2010 Unit: 8

Class/age: Year 6
Objectives should relate to EYFS/NC/ Primary Framework for Mathematics Key
YEAR 6 BLOCK D – CALCULATING, MEASURING Vocabulary &
Resources:
AND UNDERSTANDING SHAPE
Select and use standard metric units of measure and convert between units
using decimals to two places (e.g. change 2.75 litres to 2750ml, or vice
versa)
Oral and Mental Starter Time: 15 minutes IWB
Objectives: Mental arithmetic.

Use IWB to explain measure to the class.

http://www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks2/maths/measures/inde
x.htm
The children look at the IWB and read the scale on the ruler and write down their
answers on their whiteboards.

This activity is to prepare them for the main activity.

Main Teaching Time: 35 minutes

Objectives: To investigate different ways to measure length.

Identify the following: Student teacher’s own role / focus group Length, height,
Role of additional adults width,
Differentiation & assessment Metres (m),
centimetres
Recap units of measure with children using key vocabulary. Show examples (cm),
using the IWB to allow children to learn at their own individual pace. millimetres
(mm),
Explain that 10mm = 1 cm, 100cm = 1m, 1km= 1000cm 1km = 10,000 mm...etc kilometres (km),

Ask questions: Estimate

• How many mm in 1cm…10cm etc. Guess,
• How many cm in 1m…2m etc. Rectangle,
• If a man walks 1km, how many cm did he walk? Get children to see the Square,
relationships between units of length. Perimeter.

Show objects in height, length and width on IWB. Children have to estimate the
lengths.

Identify and explain any misconceptions.

Maths Zone NNS How to use a ruler IWB activity.

Plenary/Review Time: 15 minutes
Focus:

Activity/Focused Questions

Children each receive a shape which they have to measure with a piece of string.
The children are to guess the perimeter and write this down before measuring the
shape.

Focussed group: Mr XXXX to take a small group of children out of class to

measure various area around the school. They rejoin just before the plenary.

Extension activity: Children complete worksheets whereby they calculate

distances in kilometres, metres and centimetres.

Higher achievers complete worksheets giving conversions from metres to

centimetres and then kilometres. HEINMAN 6, p73 & p74.

Medium achievers complete worksheets calculating length in metres and

centimetres. HEINMAN 6, p70.

Lower achievers will carry out calculations using millimetres and centimetres.
HEINMAN 6, p69.

Prior learning/Relationship to previous teaching Cross-curricular links& use of ICT

• Finding the area and perimeter of shapes.
• The properties of 2d shapes.

By the end of the lesson the children should be able to: Probing/key questions
• Convert millimetres into centimetres.
• Convert centimetres into metres.
• Convert metres into kilometres.

Who is to be assessed & by whom? How? (This might include:

Observation, Focused / open ended
A questions, Self / peer assessment
b Work samples / Portfolios)
C
d Observation of interactivity during
e lesson and direct questioning
followed by assessment of work
produced.
