where the character s smoking, this connotes danger and lack of care for his wellbeing, the typical thriller convention of not being worried about repercussions of actions. The opening scene also contains the use of match on action, allowing the audience to gain an orientation of the setting and establish a more detailed understanding of the setting. The iconic music used sets the mood of a high adrenaline, high octane movie, using a fast tempo and lots of repetition of notes. A close up is used during an opening conversation showing detail in emotion. Film opening analysis (shorter) the purge
Before any acting has occurred, a montage of clips containing replicated CCTV footage (not actual footage just acting) is shown. This instantly sets the heavy influence of the movies theme (crime) which is a common feature of a thriller movie, also the frequency of the variation in clips suggests chaos and lack of order. The music chosen in this opening contradicts the violent nature of the film as classical, Beethoven type music does not possess the same qualities and thoughts as violence and crime. This clash of themes however in this case works as the movie is about normal, functioning members of society committing crimes in one night known as the purge so the clash in music could replicate the two things not normally paired with each other. The main character is presented in the first two minutes as your typical business man chasing the American dream the way he is represented as this is through his expensive suite, nice car, high tech gear etc., therefore making him a realistic type character that most types of audiences can understand. The stereotypical ideas in this may be presented to build their knowledge of the equilibrium set in this movie and allow the audience to easily get to grips with the situation of the movie before things become affected (due to the unrealistic nature of the plot in the film). There are a few POV shots shown in the opening scenes, this allows the audience to see the action from the characters perspective and position, instantly making it more applicable to the audience and allowing them to understand how the situation is for the individual character.
