SPSS for Windows

Single-User Installation Instructions

What You Need to Run SPSS for Windows

The minimum hardware and software requirements for SPSS for Windows are:
Windows Me, Windows 98, Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 6.

Pentium or Pentium-class processor.

For Windows Me, Windows 98, and Windows XP, 32MB or more of random-access memory (64MB
or more recommended). For Window NT and Windows 2000, 64MB or more of random access
memory.

A hard disk with at least 80MB of available disk space (for the Base system).

A CD-ROM drive.

A graphics adapter with 800 x 600 resolution (SVGA) or higher.

For connecting with an SPSS Server, a network adaptor running the TCP/IP network protocol.

You will also need the following information:

Your serial number, which is included on your CD-ROM case.

Your license code, which is included with your system on a separate sheet of paper. This enables you
to install the Base system and any SPSS options that you have purchased. If your license number is all
zeros or if you cannot find it, call your sales representative.

Note: You cannot install the single-user version of SPSS on an NT operating system that uses NT Terminal
Server.

Note for Users with Previous Versions of SPSS (version 7.5 or later)
If you have customized menus or toolbars in your software and you want to keep your customized settings,
do not uninstall the existing version of SPSS before installing SPSS. Uninstalling the existing versions will
remove any record of your product customizations. When you install SPSS, install over the existing version
of SPSS, in the same directory. This will preserve your customized settings.

Installing SPSS
To install SPSS, insert the CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The AutoPlay feature will present a menu.
To run the Setup program, choose Install SPSS, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Note: To install SPSS on Windows NT or Windows 2000, you must be logged on to your computer with
administrator privileges.

Invoking the Setup Program Manually:

You can also invoke the setup program manually:
!

From the Start menu, choose Run.

In the Run dialog box, type d:\setup. (If you arent using the D drive, enter the appropriate drive
location.)

Then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Setup Type
Typical. A Typical installation includes the sample data files, help files, TableLooks, and the Statistics
Coach. This does not include versions of the syntax reference manuals in electronic (PDF) form.
The Statistics Coach requires Internet Explorer version 4 or higher. If you dont have Internet Explorer, an
installable version of Internet Explorer 6 is available on this CD.
If you dont want to install Internet Explorer, you should use the Custom installation and deselect the
Statistics Coach.
Compact. A Compact installation includes only the minimum set of files necessary to run SPSS.
Custom. A Custom installation allows you to specify which components are installed. If you want to install
electronic (PDF) versions of the syntax reference manuals on your hard drive, you need to choose the
Custom option.
Custom Installation
Sample Data. Sample data files, including files used to create many of the examples that appear in the
manuals.
Basic Scripting. Installs Sax Basic, several sample scripts, and the files necessary to use OLE Automation
with this software.
Production Mode Facility. The Production Facility provides the ability to run this software in an automated
fashion. The program runs unattended and terminates after executing the last command, so you can
perform other tasks while it runs. Production mode is useful if you often run the same set of timeconsuming analyses, such as weekly reports.
Statistics Coach. The Statistics Coach is an interactive, wizard-like 'advisor' designed to help you choose
the type of statistical analysis or display to use with your data. The Statistics Coach asks you a series of
questions about the kind of data you have and what you want to do with it, showing you an illustrated
example of each option. When you've decided what you want, you can open the appropriate dialog box
from within the Statistical Coach itself. The Statistics Coach requires Internet Explorer 4 or higher. An
installable version of Internet Explorer 6 is available on this CD.
Syntax Guides. An Adobe Acrobat version of the Syntax Reference Guide is included with the CD-ROM
version of this software, providing comprehensive on-line instructions for using the command language. If
you select this option, Setup will install the Syntax Guide on your hard disk. If you choose not to install the
Syntax Guide, you can still run it directly from the CD-ROM.

Installing Acrobat Reader

The electronic version of the Syntax Reference Guide requires Acrobat Reader version 3 or higher. Some
product brochures on the CD require Acrobat Reader 4 or higher. If you dont already have Acrobat
Reader, the setup procedure will offer to run the Acrobat Reader setup program.

Updating or Modifying Your Installation

To add or remove a component or an SPSS option, run setup.exe from your CD-ROM. Select any new
components or options that you want to include. Make sure that every option you want to include is
selected, including any previously installed components. If you are adding an SPSS option, you may need
to enter your new license code, although it will not be necessary to enter your old license number(s) again.
To remove a component or an option, run setup.exe. When you reach the dialog box associated with the
item you want to remove, deselect that item. Make sure that every option you want to include is selected,
including any previously installed components. Please note that this is not an effective way to uninstall
SPSS. (See the "Uninstalling SPSS" section for information on uninstalling SPSS.)

Renewing Your License

If you have renewed your license for the Base System or any SPSS option, you can update it without going
through the entire installation process by running licrenew.exe. To run this utility:

Running Multiple Versions of SPSS

You can install and run multiple versions of SPSS on the same computer for versions 7.5.2 and later.
Note: Although you can run multiple instances of SPSS simultaneously and you can install multiple
versions of SPSS on the same computer, you should not run multiple versions of SPSS (e.g., SPSS 10 and
SPSS 9) simultaneously.

Installing Database Drivers

The Database Wizard uses data sources to retrieve data from databases. You can read data from any
database format for which you have an installed driver.
Before you install. If you want to retrieve data from databases in a network environment (local area or wide
area network), contact your SPSS system administrator for information about how to configure your
desktop computer with data sources. If there is no system administrator at your site you can install and
configure data sources yourself. Installable versions of database drivers from SPSS and Microsoft are
available on the CD. We recommend that you use the SPSS drivers unless you need a driver for Microsoft
Access.

Troubleshooting SVGA Resolution Problems

If the setup program fails with a message that the application requires SVGA display resolution or higher,
you can correct the problem by following the steps in this section. You can:
Change the display settings on the computer. This is the recommended solution if your computer
supports an 800 by 600 or higher resolution setting.
or
Override the display requirements of the application. Use this solution if your computer does not
support an 800 by 600 or higher resolution setting. Note that this solution will cause display problems
when you view certain Interactive Graphics dialog boxes.
Changing your display settings. Use the Windows Control Panel to change your display properties. The
application is designed to run with at least an 800 by 600 pixels display setting.
!

From the Start menu, choose Settings, then Control Panel.

Choose Display and click the Settings tab.

In the Area group, drag the slider to the right, at least as far as the 800 by 600 setting.

Click OK.

Rerun the setup program.

Overriding the display requirements. If you do not want to change your display settings, you can prevent the
setup program from failing with the following steps.
!

From the Start menu, choose Run.

In the Run dialog box, type d:\setup -NOENVFAIL. (If you arent using the D drive, enter the
appropriate CD-ROM drive location. Put a space before the -NOENVFAIL switch and use capital
letters.)

Then follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Note: Many features in SPSS are designed for 800 by 600 resolution or higher. Some dialog boxes cannot
be displayed completely at lower resolutions, and many online Help features are optimized for 800 by 600
resolution or higher.
