A CD-ROM drive.
For connecting with an SPSS Server, a network adaptor running the TCP/IP network protocol.
Your license code, which is included with your system on a separate sheet of paper. This enables you
to install the Base system and any SPSS options that you have purchased. If your license number is all
zeros or if you cannot find it, call your sales representative.
Note: You cannot install the single-user version of SPSS on an NT operating system that uses NT Terminal
Server.
Note for Users with Previous Versions of SPSS (version 7.5 or later)
If you have customized menus or toolbars in your software and you want to keep your customized settings,
do not uninstall the existing version of SPSS before installing SPSS. Uninstalling the existing versions will
remove any record of your product customizations. When you install SPSS, install over the existing version
of SPSS, in the same directory. This will preserve your customized settings.

In the Run dialog box, type d:\setup. (If you arent using the D drive, enter the appropriate drive
location.)
Setup Type
Typical. A Typical installation includes the sample data files, help files, TableLooks, and the Statistics
Coach. This does not include versions of the syntax reference manuals in electronic (PDF) form.
The Statistics Coach requires Internet Explorer version 4 or higher. If you dont have Internet Explorer, an
installable version of Internet Explorer 6 is available on this CD.
If you dont want to install Internet Explorer, you should use the Custom installation and deselect the
Statistics Coach.
Compact. A Compact installation includes only the minimum set of files necessary to run SPSS.
Custom. A Custom installation allows you to specify which components are installed. If you want to install
electronic (PDF) versions of the syntax reference manuals on your hard drive, you need to choose the
Custom option.
Custom Installation
Sample Data. Sample data files, including files used to create many of the examples that appear in the
manuals.
Basic Scripting. Installs Sax Basic, several sample scripts, and the files necessary to use OLE Automation
with this software.
Production Mode Facility. The Production Facility provides the ability to run this software in an automated
fashion. The program runs unattended and terminates after executing the last command, so you can
perform other tasks while it runs. Production mode is useful if you often run the same set of timeconsuming analyses, such as weekly reports.
Statistics Coach. The Statistics Coach is an interactive, wizard-like 'advisor' designed to help you choose
the type of statistical analysis or display to use with your data. The Statistics Coach asks you a series of
questions about the kind of data you have and what you want to do with it, showing you an illustrated
example of each option. When you've decided what you want, you can open the appropriate dialog box
from within the Statistical Coach itself. The Statistics Coach requires Internet Explorer 4 or higher. An
installable version of Internet Explorer 6 is available on this CD.
Syntax Guides. An Adobe Acrobat version of the Syntax Reference Guide is included with the CD-ROM
version of this software, providing comprehensive on-line instructions for using the command language. If
you select this option, Setup will install the Syntax Guide on your hard disk. If you choose not to install the
Syntax Guide, you can still run it directly from the CD-ROM.
