Name: Jennifer Wong

Subject: Math 8

Grade Level: 8

Objectives:
SWBAT identify inverse operations in order to solve one-step and two-step equations.
Standards:
8.EE.7b. Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations
whose solutions require expanding expressions using the distributive property and
collecting like terms.
Assessment:
As the first part of the worksheet is completed as a class, the teacher will
continue to ask students to give a thumbs up or a thumbs down to indicate whether or
not they agree and understand.
While the students complete the rest of the worksheet independently, the teacher
will walk around the classroom to make sure every student is on task. She will also
make sure that every student understands how to apply the formula.
The students will complete a little half-sheet at the end of class. The half sheet
will ask the students about one thing they enjoyed about the lesson and one thing they
learned and its importance. There will be another question asking what could be
improved or any misconceptions or questions that they have. These questions will be
answered by the beginning of the next class.
Instructional materials:
Tic-Tac-Toe Boards
o One-step
o Two-step
o Create your own
Introduction/Warm-up: (6 minutes)
The students will be given two equations that they must solve. There will a one-step
equation and then a two-step equation. After about 2 or 3 minutes, the teacher will ask
the students how to solve the equations. The teacher will ask the following questions:
Is this a one-step or two-step equation?
What should I do first?
What do I have on the right side now?
What am I trying to cancel out?
Guided Practice (9 minutes):
1. As a class, we will complete some more practice problems. There will be one and
two step equations. There will be three practice problems.
2. The teacher will walk through these problems with the students, similar to how
the warm-up was reviewed. There will be 3 problems that will be done as a class.

Independent Practice (29 minutes):

1. Students will work with a partner and play a game of Tic-Tac-Toe by solving
equations. There will be an easy version with just one-step equations that will be
the first round. After the first-round is finished, they will move on to the second
round, two-step equations.
2. Students will choose which box they would like, solve the equation in that box,
and then have the partner to check it. If their partner agrees, then the student can
mark that box.
3. If students finish both rounds, then they will have a chance to create their own
board when given the value of x. Students will have to create their own
equations.
Closure:
1. All game boards will be collected.
2. Students will be given an exit ticket.
