Dear Parishioners,
In our readings today, we are reminded of Acts of the
Apostles: A major dispute arose in the early church as to how much
of the Laws and tradition of Moses should be imposed on the
Gentiles (non-Jews) who became converted to Christianity. Todays
reading gives the solution four items needed to be followed.
Revelation: We see the New Jerusalem Gods Kingdom in
all its glory. This is our promise.
St John: We see a further part of the words of Jesus to his disciples at the Last Supper.
He will be leaving them but will not leave them orphaned here is the promise of the Holy
Spirit.
In the Gospel today we hear some of the most beautiful words of Jesus: Peace I leave
you, my own peace I give you, a peace which the world cannot give, this is my gift to you. So do
not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. (Read these words again, please!)
Notice that it is his own peace he is giving us. Jesus knew too that peace in our lives and
peace in our world Is often a scarce commodity. He knew that peace would be always
challenged by hate, violence, selfishness, power and many other mostly human characteristics!
That is why Jesus prayed for peace. That is why we need to work for peace in our lives and in
our world. We must never despair, but always trust in Gods goodness and mercy also believe
in the goodness of human beings.
PASTORAL LETTER: Cardinal Vincent has a Pastoral Letter for us this weekend: It is
based on the Letter of Exhortation from Pope Francis, The Joy of Love Amoris Laetitia
which was the follow up to the Synod of Bishops.
PRESS STATEMENT: There is also a Press Statement from our visit to Strasbourg
available. I should mention too there was a historic meeting at the House of Commons last
Monday evening. Several Trade Unions have taken up the cause of Abdullah Ocalan, the
imprisoned Kurdish leader. His niece, Dilek Ocalan, HDP MP in Turkey, was part of the Council
of the Freedom for Ocalan campaign. I found it very heartening to see the wider support for
what we have been working in for years.
CONGRATULATIONS to all the children receiving their First Holy Communion this
weekend and next and all who have helped in the preparations.
Thats all for now. Have a good week.
