Title
Firefly-Inspired Synchronization of Wireless Sensor Networks (Research Based
Project)
Description
This project aims to enhance and develop new scheme for tome synchronization in
wireless sensor networks using biological phenomena of firefly to achieve
synchronization among wireless nodes with the minimum consumption of energy
since energy is critical issue in such networks
Requirements
-

Motivation toward research (reading papers and then learn how to write
papers)
Design as a scheme that supposed to outperform the schemes in the state of
arts and then implement this scheme using a simulation tool or using hardware
(TelosB or MicaZ already available) to run the experiments and then compare
the achieved results with the existing schemes and protocols

Output for the Project

1. Graduation Project Report
2. Publish a research paper with the achieved results

Project #2 (Dr Iyad Tumar)

Title
Car Parking Monitoring System Based on a Wireless Sensor Network
Description
System to monitor the occupancy of vehicles within a car park or roadside
environments, each parking space equipped a wireless vehicle detection sensor which
feeds back occupancy information in real time to a base station that send information
to a server that accessible by end user who can displays the vehicle occupancy in real
time manner and take decision based on these information
The aim of the project was to develop a car parking monitoring system, with a view to
designing a suitable prototype and with multiple vehicle detection sensors; the final

product was desired to provide simple installation, operation and high reliability,
whilst ensuring low cost design. The system will be aimed to be a parking solution
ideal for end users in Ramallah and other cities

Requirements
-

Motivation to learn about wireless sensor networks

Learn about Contiki operating system or nesC language (dialect of C
language)
Design and build a system using a simulation tool or using hardware (TelosB
or MicaZ already available) to run the experiments and get results
Build a website and database for real time information supposed to received
from the sensor nodes in the car park/s

Output for the Project:

1. Graduation Project Report
2. Produce a Car Parking Monitoring System solution that could marketable
3. In case students achieve scientific contribution then a paper could be
published

The following are the projects of Dr Khader

Awwad

1. Medical Lab system: This will be to build a complete medical laboratory

system which include: database for medical laboratory tests, billing, and
can expand on it to build recognition system for some of the test to be
automated.
2. Arabic OCR recognition System: Build a complete printed Arabic
recognition system, this will require to deal with image
enhancement, feature vector extraction, text localization,
segmentation, and classification.
3. Memory Compiler: Build memory compiler, this will be based in using a
reference design to generate different memory design. For example if you
are given a design for 256x4 your compiler can generate 64x4 or 128x4.
Required knowledge of architecture, c/c++ , layout and IC design
4. BZU University Car/Plate recognition system: able to identify a
vehicle, there needs to be a triggering mechanism so that the image is
captured at the correct time. The system also requires some means by
which the plate is located, read and checked against existing plates. The

system then requires an output for if the plate has been recognized. This
can display on a computer screen some distance away
5. Evaluation of Feature Extraction Methods for Arabic texts : Image and
pattern recognition have been developed and used for quite a long time.
The recognition of unconstrained handwritten numerals is still a
challenging problem in pattern recognition. This is because there are a lot
of different hand writing styles and various image qualities. The aim of
this research is to evaluate different ways of feature extraction methods
for Arabic recognition systems
6.

A 3D Computer Game: Design and develop a 3D computer games.

Educational game learning system using OpenGL or any other tool
for elementary student (1st to 6th Grade (Math, Arabic, Englesh). Can
also build virtual tour of a school, class then start the class game.

7. Medical field: Human body virtual tour for Medical student or anyone

using OpenGL or any other tools, can work with the pharmacy
department, nursing to simulate or build human body and by clicking on
some specific part can explain in more detail. This might be done in
hirarecal way to go in different level. It be used such as if someone has a
leg (knee) pain, it can suggest what things that could cause it based on
the area

8.

Automatic Mobil phone Shop Names : Automatic Detection and

Recognition of Shop Name in Outdoor Images and translate the name into
voice (English/Arabic).

9. Architectures for Energy Efficient Computing Heterogeneous and

Homogenous Chip: Power consumption is a key concern for all computing
applications due to not only power supply limitations but cooling and reliability
costs as well. As such low power techniques are an area of primary focus in the
design of computing systems. Confronted with the limitations of the power
wall, architects and designers are now addressing the problems at all levels of
abstraction. The solution that has seen the most amount of success has been to
parallelize the work load over multiple cores. In light of this emphasis we first
need to survey the low power core architectures and then expanded into
Heterogeneous and Homogenous Chip Multi Processors as well as Transactional
memory. The outcome of this project will be to build a tool to estimate power
based on C/c++ emulation code of the architecture.

10. Automated quantitative analysis and assessment of human tissue images of

several types of cancers . This required in getting Tissue samples which sampled

by urologists from different areas. When biopsy samples are taken from tissues, they
are prepared for observation under microscope by specialized pathologists. Cores
are sampled from suspicious and non suspicious areas in order to have prognostic
information on the areas where cancerous cells may spread to. Also, sampling
different cores would identify cases where cancer is slowly growing compared to
other areas where cancer is growing more aggressively.
11. Cache Power reduction : Reducing Cache Power with Low-Cost, Multi-bit Error-Correcting

The following are the projects for Dr Abualsoud

Hanani
1) "How May I Help You" automatic spoken dialogue system.
2) spoken language identification system
3) speaker recognition using multi-core processor (GPU)
4) spoken keyword spotting
5) bird species recognition corpus (if enough birdsongs recordings are available)

I will send later ideas from other instructors.
