Salmo Launches
Firesmart Campaign
The Village of Salmo has launched a public education

and support campaign to raise awareness of the risk that
wildfire poses and provide information to residents and
businesses on actions they can take to reduce wildfire risk
on private property.
A street banner, new information web page, leaflets to
residents in the Salmo Fire Protection Area, free home fire
risk assessments, and support for public education events
are all part of the FireSmart campaign, made possible by
a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM).
This entire region is vulnerable to wildfire. Last years
fire season was another wake-up call, says Mayor White.
Our goal is to provide residents with the knowledge and
organizational means to significantly reduce their neighbourhoods vulnerability to wildfire.
Salmo Volunteer Fire Department Chief, David Hearn,
has been appointed as the Local FireSmart Representative
and can be called upon by residents for assistance in home

assessments, information on fuel mitigation and how to
organize their neighbourhood to become a FireSmart
Community.
Hearn points to the advantages of having neighbourhoods,
defined as a group of 20 to 50 homes, deemed FireSmart
by the national Partners in Protection Program. FireSmart
neighbourhoods act as a fire break and deliver the peace of
mind that comes with reduced wildfire risk, says Hearn.
He also notes that property values stand to improve while
insurance companies note the reduced risk of loss.
The Village also hopes to inform residents of the reality of firefighting capacity during a major fire event and
that the best fire suppression is fire hazard mitigation and
prevention.
Salmo residents are reminded that Spring Yard Waste
Pick Up Day, a residential service provided by the Village,
is set for May 3 and May 4. This is a great opportunity to
clean up and reduce fuel (woody debris and hazardous
vegetation) and have it picked up and taken away by the
Village crew.
It is also noted that Saturday, May 7 is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day and a great opportunity for
residents to prepare for this years fire season.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Village office
at 250-357-9433 today to book their free home fire risk
assessment and find out how their neighbourhood can
become a FireSmart community. For more information,

Thursay, May 5 is International Day of the Midwife. Registered Midwives in BC offer primary maternity care to
healthy pregnant women and their newborn babies from
early pregnancy, through labour and birth, until six weeks
postpartum. Midwives listen, observe, educate, guide and
care. They order and interpret tests and discuss results.
They screen for physical, psychological, emotional and
social health and can prescribe when necessary. They are
with women during normal pregnancy, labour and birth;
and collaborate with other health professionals if complications arise. They catch babies in hospitals and at home.
They do home visits postpartum. They help with breastfeeding and adjusting to life with a new baby. Midwives
practice evidence based, woman centered maternity and
newborn care and are an established part of the BC health
care system. Midwifery care is covered by BC Health.

Emergency Preparedness
Disaster Day
Disaster will strike Nelsons Hall Street on Saturday,

May 7 when local agencies come together as part of
National Emergency Preparedness Week to host Disaster
Day. The event is meant to promote personal, family and
community emergency preparedness as well as promote
Fire Smart principles for our community.
Disaster Day will bring together local agencies to show
how we all work together during a disaster, says Len MacCharles, Fire Chief for the City of Nelson. It can help our
community and residents be better prepared for a large
emergency.
Everyone is invited to come down to meet agency representatives and participate in the fun. Therell be kids
activities, fire trucks, an ambulance, hazmat, a sprinkler
protection unit and free hot dogs! All located on Hall
Street between Baker and Vernon, from 11 am to 3 pm.

Bikes Not Pipes Rides Again!
Bikes Not Pipes rides again. Cyclists are going for the 3rd
annual critical mass bike ride in Nelson on Saturday, May 7.
Once again the ride highlights support for a clean
energy future and to break free from fossil fuels.
The ride starts at 2 pm at 719 Vernon Street, in front
of the Civic Theatre. It winds through Nelson arriving at
Lakeside Park for a rally with refreshments, music and
visiting at 3 pm.
