COIL BREAK
Defect Description:
Creases/Ridges, transverse to the rolling direction. Generally covers total width of the
strip. It may also be found near the edges with regular or irregular spacing. Formed
during uncoiling of the strip after annealing.
Possible Causes:
High yield point elongation particularly with low yield strength values.
Remedial Measures:
Increase speed of uncoiling at SPM, particularly for thicker guages.

Generally, they have localized presence on the strip surface and can be present
randomly.
Size: Usually varies from 1 to 40 mm, sometimes even bigger.
Shape: Irregular.
Possible Causes:
Seperation of Rolled in Scab/External Matter.
Blowholes/Coarse inclusions.

INDENT
Defect Description:
Indentation (depressions) can be distributed at definite distances apart or irregularly
throughout the length and width of the stock.
Possible Causes:
These are mainly caused by damaged rolls, by proturbences on the rools ar rollers.
The distance between the periodically appearing defects often provides indications of
origin and source.
Remedial Measures
Regular cleaning and inspection of the the work rolls and pinch rolls is
required.
Possibilities of confusion:
Indentation can be mistaken for minute blistering and spilliness.

They are patches on the rolled surface, appearing as large number of minute iron
particles spread over that area. They largely occur in bands. the particles are strongly
adhered to the surface, and amount to a highly rough surface.

The mechanical wear of the sheet material due to friction results in minute iron
particles, which are transferred from the work rolls to the rolled surface.

Possibilities of confusion:
Prominent iron-particles could be mistaken for fine dents.

ROLLED IN SCALE
Defect Description:
Other types of rolled in defects are marks in the surface caused by rolled in metallic or
non-metallic foreign bodies of varying shape and size. Largely, they could be identified
as scales on the sheet surface
Occurence:
Rolled in defects are caused by foreign bodies imprinted in the stock during rolling.
Possibilities of Confusion:
Rolled in types of defects can be mistaken for identations when the rolled foreign body
has been removed from the defect area. Similar defects can also be caused in the
subsequent processing plants by withdrawal and straightening gear, for example by
scale adhering to the rollers.

Primarily caused by friction between the stock and parts of the equipment due to
relative movements. Longitudinal defects occur during transportation of the stock by
way of roller tables or during coiling and decoiling. Transverse defects arise maily
during transverse movements of the plates or when hot band coils are discharged
from the coiler. If the stock is damaged when hot, scale forms on the damaged areas
and can be rolled in subsequent passes. When scratch occurs, a sliver can be formed
or there may be an accumulation of the material to the side or at the end of the
scratch.

UNDER PICKLING
Defect Description:
This defect is characterized irregular dark patches spread irregularly over the whole
surface of the steel sheet. The patches are finger like and angular in the form.
Possible Causes:
This defect is caused due to the imbalance between the composition of the acid and
the time of reaction in the Pickling Mill.
Remedial Measures:
Camera Angle
Centre/Down
Flash Used

This defect originates prior to the cold rolling mill, hence it could spoil the final rolled
surface, it is important to inspect the reaction time and the composition of the acidic
vehicle in the Prickling Mill.
