Questions 11 16 are based on the following passage.

childhood.

The dark skies over Ipoh, Perak, threatened rain as Puan Lisa, her son,
Mustafa, and her parents, Ismail Hassan and Fatimah Ishak walked down the street
after Raya shopping.
Lisa stopped and saw a portable CD player in a shop window. Mustafa
would love that, she whispered to her mother making sure nine-year-old Mustafa
hadnt overheard.
She then realized Mustafa was missing. After a terrifying search, they found
him lying on his side, crying in agony a block away. Other shoppers watched as
she comforted him in her arms.
Through his tears he said, Im sorry, Mum. My legs forgot to work. They
hurt so much. Unable to stand, he was given a piggyback ride by his grandpa to
the car.
The pains started when Mustafa was just five. Mustafa would fall to the floor
and scream. The doctor could do little more than put him on a morphine drip to
deaden the pain. Mustafa had dystonia, an illness that affected his muscle tone.
Mustafas dystonia was severe. It affected much of his body, including his left
leg, back, hands and even his face. There was no cure. The older he got, the
worse it became. He regularly fell down the steps at home, when his left leg
would go into convulsions and collapse beneath him. At other times, his jaw
would lock and he could barely speak.
A doctor explained Mustafas options to his parents. Im afraid weve tried
everything except to numb his nerves. We have to inject a painkiller into his spine
but he will lose the use of his legs. Then he will be confined to a wheelchair.
He immediately shot back, No! No! Youre not doing that to me. He was
just nine but suddenly seemed much older. He made Lisa promise to find alternative
treatment.
After that he experienced several attacks, forcing him to use a wheelchair
during prolonged painful sessions. Although the spasms would recede and his
bruises heal, Mustafa was always in pain. He wrote in his diary: The pain is like
a strong electric shock. It is like I am being stabbed. I hide my pain because I am
frightened, embarrassed and frustrated. He had to study at home.
In 2002, Mustafa had been in the hospital for two months for physiotherapy,
recovering from a particularly bad attack. First he mastered a balance board, then,
holding the rails of a treadmill, he walked a little more each day. Finally, he was
ready to try slow jogging.
Lisa watched in amazement as he managed to slowly jog. His progress was
quick and amazing. He did this in spite of the doctors warning to slow down.
When Lisa heard what he wanted to do next, she was at first alarmed but knowing
how determined Mustafa was, she relented.
Krishnan Gopal had coached numerous boys and girls in the athletics class at
Young Athletics Club, but there was something about Mustafa that made him
different. Mustafa had raw talent and the willingness to practice. He had the fire

in his eye that all champions have.

Over the years, Mustafa had mastered how to cover up his pain and hide his
disease. If he felt a dystonia attack was imminent, he would retreat to his
bedroom.
But, remarkably, when he was running, the pain receded. And he was fast:
coaches stopped to watch him blow past other runners. Mustafa was ecstatic when
other runners were asking who he was. The family leapt and hugged ecstatically
as Mustafa broke the tape at the head of the field.
