is important to recycle
responsibly as plastic bags

contaminant and will not
be recycled.”
Pitcher explained that
the fee does not go to pay
her wages, but is used
strictly for the cost incurred
for the bins, transporta-
tion and processing of the
materials being recycled by
Allied Waste.
“I am paid by a grant
and this plan with the $12
fee is a lot less expensive
than putting out those
items in bags by the curb.”
Onekama Township
supervisor David Meister
said residents of his town-
ship are excited at the pros-
pect of having expanded
recycling capabilities. He
said the ones they have run
in the past were very well
received by the residents.
“We have been recycling
for years, and the township
has been paying the bill as
it was a community effort,”
said Meister. “We took the
next step with the county,
and it is better than our
past situation as the bins
look very nice. We do get

new bins look, and see the
amount people taking part
in it.
“We hope it will really
take off and more people
want to get into recycling,”
said Pitcher. “Hopefully,
more townships will want
to recycle once they see
how good it works for these
townships.”

A good problem to have
Last week, the weather
just demanded a strawber-
ry milkshake from House
of Flavors and who am I
to say no? I took my milk-
shake down to my favorite
spot at First Street beach
and settled in to enjoy it,
but I ran into a problem.
The strawberries in the ice
cream kept getting stuck
in my straw. I was a little
frustrated at first, but even-
tually I just had to laugh as
I thought, “That’s a pretty
good problem to have.” I’m
definitely a “glass half full”
sort of person, so I started
thinking about other good
problems to have. Here are
some examples:
More traffic, and more

I have to drive a little
slower. But it’s good to see
these folks on their way “up
north” to spend some time
and money in our com-
munity.
I had a hard time carry-
ing all the books I bought
at Anne’s Books on River
Street (hardcover best sell-
ers in excellent condition
for just $5), but I managed.
The Maple Street Bridge
was up last week and I was
running late for a meeting,
but it’s hard to mind that
when I see sailboats and
freighters moving along
the river. No matter what
the cargo, I envision them
carrying jobs and money
into Manistee. As a bonus,
blaming the bridge for
being late is a universally
accepted explanation.
I’m planting a new
flower garden this year in a
shady spot in my backyard.
I don’t know much about
shade-loving flowers, so I
did some reconnaissance at
Weesies last week. It took
forever because there are a
lot of flowers in that place.
That’s a pretty good prob-
lem, to wander around for
an hour or so in a green-
house full of flowers.
