2.1 Industry Growth
Industrial Growth, Current
I see the graphic design industry as expanding to meet the needs of industry, or whatever exact
commerce entity might desire to represent themselves with meaningful branding. I feel that
technological developments have allowed for products to be more efficiently available to consumers,
which has allowed for more particular products aimed at small segments, and digital media is without
the sort of physical manufacture of books and such. So, there are opportunities for many brands to
form that arent so much with their branding roots planted in industrial capital, like a warehouse
heater company. However, movements towards the reduction in the gimmicky complication of logos
while preserving the archetype.
Apple recently gave its iPhones and iPads a facelift with the launch of its new
operating system iOS 7, stripping away small design details like drop shadows and
high gloss from their default icons and opting for
a simplified design which has launched the term
flat design into the mainstream. (OBrien,
2013)1
However, again, there are definitely many other brands
and products that are free to be accompanied by any
sort of artistic concepts, and everything ironic between
there and absolute corporate branding.
The Dominos pan pizza box appears to a compromise
amongst extremes to accomplish a thoughtful, confident
aesthetic:

Industrial Growth, Direction

I see graphic design retaining the ultimate in corporate branding, while simultaneously, more
fantastic, vintage designs becoming meaningful. This situation should present a good era for brands
that have retained relatively outdated to successfully find an inspired reinventing.
Vintage logo designs, inspired by the blissful consumerism of the 1960s or the rugged,
frontiersman-chic stamp emblems of the late 19th century, are all the rage nowadays.
But soon the recent past will lose its novelty, and logo designers will have to find a way
to renew the vintage look. Well, theres only one way to go and thats backwards, so

look forward to a crop of hip designs invoking medieval design feudal family coats
of arms, regal seals and ornamental scrolls. Once there, hieroglyphics arent far off.
(Bigman, 2013)3
I forecast that branding will in way or another will become more inspired. I think the average person
is becoming more knowledgeable and consciously inspirable due to developments in digital
technologies and increased availability to information and artistic media. Such allows for the average
person to appreciate a larger range of concepts which can be utilized in graphic design. I think
elements of art deco and nouveau will be used sensibly to pave a way back towards creativity being
more respected in design.
Industrial Growth, Future
Perceiving as far into the future as 25 years, digital media will continue to merge media and brands.
The art of visual artist, musicians, writers, etc. will be brands that combine for the purpose of various
digital media, especially as video games. For example, developed brands of musical groups will be
attached to visual and other creative artist as actors are to movies. The creators of media, like video
games, will be presented as a selling point. The brand reputation of the artist will be an aspect to the
media, like often a musician
has developed a persona.
Many examples of this have
occurred, so me more
obscured to the masses.
The early Wipeout (video
game, 1996) titles combined
exceptional gameplay, the
design of The Designers
Republic, music fro m
prominent electro nica
musicians, and Red Bull
advertisements (before Red
Bull was sold in The U.S.) to
create something that
worked well.

Personal Growth, Future

For myself, what I want is to have a career involved with working with others to create inspired media
of any sort. I am choosing to specialize in graphic design, because it has been such an interest of
mine. Im acquiring the education and will be developing my knowledge and skills during the next
years. Im sure that I will continue to develop what I think about relevant things. I will eventually seek
employment in the field. I have creative projects that I would like to accomplish personally. I will look

for opportunities to live near the Western coast, where I feel I can fully embrace a lifestyle based
around the practice of graphic design.
