Question 1

a.

Air at a pressure of 101.3 kPa and a temperature of 288.8 K is flowing between two flat
plates at 3.05 m/s. The plates have the dimension of 0.305 m x 0.305 m and the
temperatures are maintained at 333.2 K. Given that the physical properties of air at 1 atm
abs as Table Q1.1.

Estimate the rate of heat loss by free convection from the unit length of a long horizontal
pipe, 15.24 cm O.D., if the outer surface temperature is 38oC and the surrounding air is at 1
atm and 27oC. You may use Table Q1.1 for physical properties of air.

c.

An electric wire having a diameter of 1.5 mm and covered with a plastic insulation with
certain thickness is exposed to air at 300 K and ho = 20 W/m2K. The insulation has a k =
0.4 W/mK. It is assumed that the wire surface temperature is constant at 400 K and is not
affected by the covering,

Question 2

a.

A Newtonian liquid is flowing as a falling film on an inclined flat surface as shown in Fig.
Q2.1.The surface makes an angle with the horizontal. Assume that in this case the
section being considered is sufficiently far from both ends that there are no end effects on
the velocity profile. The thickness of the film is .

It is interested to know the boundary layer thickness of the liquid that flows over the
horizontal flat plate shown in Fig. Q2.2. Approximate method by assuming a velocity profile
equation was used by von Karman to solve the boundary-layer equations. To solve the
equations, the pressure term was neglected for simplification of the solution. By providing
three (3) boundary conditions and take the initial velocity profile assumption to be a thirdorder derivation, and without derivation, show that the function for the velocity profile below
is plausible:
