Chapter 30Meditations without Mantra

Caliber for Constant Self-Authority

Originally taught by Yogi Bhajan in March 1979

Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh.

Keep the torso straight at all times. Do not lean forward or backwards.
MUDRA: Bring the hands in front of the body at the level of the Heart Center.

Close the fingers over the thumbs into fists with the thumb tips at the base
of the little fingers, if possible. Press the fists together at the first knuckles from
the tips of the fingers in such a manner that the base of the palms are together and the backs of the palms face away from the center.
EYE POSITION: Fix the eyes on the tip of the nose. There is no required

mantra except the subtle sense of the breath itself.

BREATH: Begin the following steady breathing pattern:

Inhale deeply through the nose.

Exhale completely through the mouth with pursed lips.
Inhale smoothly through the mouth.
Exhale through the nose.
TIME: Continue for 3 minutes. Build slowly to a steady 11 minutes.

Build the meditation to a maximum of 22 minutes.

TO END: Inhale and hold the breath as you stretch both hands up over the head.

Exhale and continue to stretch for 2 more deep breaths. Relax.

COMMENTS

Caliber is the ability to maintain the projected status and activity of our committed self. When we become our own
directive authority, then the psyche can fulfill the self, and you can be happy. Normally we reject authority and initiate
chaos out of an attempt to create individuality by difference rather than through integrity and wholeness.
This meditation enhances your capacity for caliber, to hold and execute self-authority.

The Complete Adi Mantra for Individual Meditation

1 of 2

Sit in an Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh.

EYE POSITION: Focus your eyes on the tip of the nose.
MUDRA: Bring both palms in front of the Heart Center facing upward. Touch the sides

of the palms along the little fingers and sides of the hands, as if you will receive something in them. Form Gyan Mudra in each hand.
BREATH PATTERN & MANTRA: Chant the entire mantra 3-5 times on one breath.

Keep the number of repetitions per breath constant. The sound DAYV is chanted a
minor third higher than the other sounds. The sound of DAYVAA
carries slightly on the AA sound.

ONG NAMO, GUROO DAYV NAMO,

GUROO DAYV NAMO, GUROO DAYVAA
The sound of ONG is created in the inner chambers of the sinuses and upper palate. It is the NG
sound that is emphasized. The first part of NAMO is short and rhymes with HUM. The syllable GU
is pronounced as in the word good. The syllable ROO rhymes with the word true. The word DAYV
rhymes with save. The AA in DAYVAA is chanted with the mouth open and the sound vibrating from an open throat.
TIME: Continue for 11-31 minutes for a powerful meditation and guidance. Yogi Bhajan did not restrict longer periods

of practice.

COMMENTS

To center before a set of Kundalini Yoga we chant the Adi Mantra, Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo, three to five times. Adi means the
first or primal; mantra is the creative projection of the mind through sound. This mantra is the first creative action. It centers you
into the Higher Self and reminds your lower mind that it is not your ego that will practice or teach Kundalini Yoga. Technically, it
links you into the Golden Chain. The Golden Chain is the inner spark of kundalini that is passed from person to person; teacher to
student; guru to teacher; cosmos and God to Guru. By chanting this mantra and linking to the Golden Chain, the exercises and
meditations that you practice are guided by your higher consciousness and all the teachers that have brought this opportunity to
you. It makes you very receptive and sensitive to the message of your body, mind, and intuition. It is used as a link when you teach
and as preparation for your personal practice. However, it is not an individual mantra, complete in itself. It is a hook that creates a
flow, which you serve. If you need an individual, spiritual link and source of guidance, then there is another form to use: the
Complete Adi Mantra.
The complete individual form of the mantra immerses you in awareness and guidance for your personal situation. It establishes a guiding beam between you in your immediate state, and your higher consciousness, that is true through all states. It is very
useful if you are entering Shakti Pad in Kundalini Yoga. It is also excellent as a means to gain perspective and direction.

CHAPTER 12

Awakening the Consciousness

SADHANA MANTRAS FOR THE AQUARIAN AGE

5. Rakhe Rakhan Har (7 minutes)

This is a shabd of protection against all negative forces which
move against ones walk on the path of destiny, both inner and
outer. It cuts like a sword through every opposing vibration,
thought, word, and action.
It is part of the evening prayer of the Sikhs (Rehiras). Rakhe
Rakhan Har was composed by Guru Arjan, the Fifth Guru.

Guidelines for Leading the Aquarian Sadhana

This is meant to be a model for morning sadhana onlytimes
are very approximate. Adjust according to the needs of the
group. With a group sadhana, it is important to end sadhana
on time, so that everyone can adjust their schedules accordingly.

Rakhay rakhanahaar aap ubaaria-an

First guideline for sadhana leaders: Show up!

Gur kee pairee paa-i kaaj savaari-an

If for any reason you are not able to make it on the day you are
leading, you must arrange for someone else to lead.

Hoaa aap da-iaal manaho na visaari-an

Saadh janaa kai sang bhavajal taari-an
Saakat nindak dusht khin maa-eh bidaari-an
Tis saahib kee tayk Naanak manai maa-eh
Jis simrat sukh ho-i sagalay dookh jaa-eh

Thou who savest, save us all and take us across,

Uplifting and giving the excellence.
You gave us the touch of the lotus feet of the
Guru, and all our jobs are done.
You have become merciful, kind, and compassionate; and
so our mind does not forget Thee.
In the company of the holy beings you take us from
misfortune and calamities, scandals, and disrepute.
Godless, slanderous enemiesyou finish them in timelessness.
That great Lord is my anchor.
Nanak, keep firm in your mind, by meditating and
repeating His Name
All happiness comes and all sorrows and pain go away.
6. Wahe Guru Wahe Jio (22 minutes)
Chant this mantra sitting in Vir Asan: sitting on the left heel with the
right knee up, right foot flat on the ground and hands in Prayer Pose.
Eyes are focused at the tip of the nose.
Wha-hay Guroo Wha-hay Guroo
Wha-hay Guroo Wha-hay Jeeo

Wahe Guru is a mantra of ecstasy. There is no real translation for

it, though we could say, Wow, God is great! or indescribably
great is His Infinite, Ultimate Wisdom. Jeeo is an affectionate but
still respectful variation of the word Jee which means soul. We
establish ourselves for victory and the right to excel.
7. Guru Ram Das Chant (5 minutes)
Guroo Guroo Wha-hay Guroo Guroo Raam Das Guroo

This in praise of the consciousness of Guru Ram Das, invoking his spiritual light, guidance, and protective grace. We are filled with humility.

If you are unfamiliar with Japji or concerned about fine-tuning

pronunciation, use a tape or CD. If possible, read Japji tantric
stylemale-female reading alternate lines. A copy of Japji can be
downloaded from sikhnet.com.

Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo & Yoga Set

4:20 am

Dim the lights. A good choice for the yoga set is a basic
energizing, Kundalini-raising set, including lots of stretching,
Spinal Flexes, and Breath of Fire. Its a good idea to end with
Sat Kriya. The yoga set should be about 25-30 minutes. If you
are going to play music during the yoga, choose mantra music,
and play it at a low volume.

Deep Relaxation

Dim the lights further, if necessary. Keep the relaxation relatively

short5 minutes. If you choose to play music, keep it very low.
Mantra music with a meditative quality is effective.

Meditations (62 minutes). Begin approximately 5:00 am

Lights can be turned very low or completely off. Keep sadhana

music loud enough to be heard clearly throughout the entire sadhana room, so that it envelops us, and is easy to sing along
with, while being sensitive to not making it too loud. Let the
music surround and expand you.

After the meditations, starting approximately 6:00 am

Sadhana ends with a sacred prayer (which can be taken from

Peace Lagoon), singing the Sunshine song, and chanting Long
Sat Naams. For a deep experience of Naad, one can choose to
end Sadhana by taking a hukam from a Nitnem, reading from
the Siri Guru Granth Sahib, or having a Gurdwara program.
Hold the space, enjoy the bliss of this ambrosial hour. It will fill
your days with connection, sweetness, and purpose. Sat Naam.

Meditation for Prosperity II

This exercise is part of Subagh Kriya, and can
also be practised as a stand-along meditation.

Sit in Easy Pose, with a light jalandhar bandh.

EYE POSITION: Focus at the tip of the nose, through eyes 9/10th closed.
MUDRA: Elbows are by the sides, forearms angled up and outward with the fingers at the
level of the throat. The exercise begins with the palms facing down.

Alternately hit the sides of the hands together. The Mercury (pinky) fingers and the Moon Mounds (located on the bottom of the palms) hit
when the palms face up. When the palms hit facing down, the sides
of the Jupiter (index) fingers touch, and the thumbs cross below the
hands, with the right thumb under the left.
Yogi Bhajan said that the thumbs crossing this way is the key to the meditation.
MANTRA: The Tantric Har tape is perfect for this meditation.

HAR HAR
Chant continuously from the navel, using the tip of the tongue.
TIME: Continue for 3-11 minutes.

Yogi Bhajan has said about the timing: This meditation can be done
for up to 11 minutes. It is so powerful in bringing prosperity that more
than 11 minutes would be greedy.

COMMENTS

"This meditation stimulates the mind, the moon center and Jupiter. When Jupiter and the moon come together, there is no
way in the world you will not create wealth."

CHAPTER 31 Meditations with Mantra

Venus Kriyas
How to Practice Venus Kriyas
Venus Kriyas are Kundalini Yoga exercises done with a partner, usually a partner of the opposite sex. Although Venus Kriyas are less intense
than White Tantric Yoga, they fall into the category of a more advanced Kundalini Yoga practice, because they intensify the experience of the
exercise through the polarities of the male-female interaction. So, adhere to the following guidelines when teaching or practicing Venus Kriyas:
Always tune in with the Adi Mantra: Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo before practicing Venus Kriyas.
Venus Kriyas are not done to sensually or sexually seduce ones partner. They are done from a state of elevation, to elevate the relationship and the polarities to a purity and their highest vibration. If done with the wrong intention, they lose their effectiveness and in fact, it can
be more damaging than helpful.
Limit the exercise to 3 minutes (unless specifically taught otherwise by Yogi Bhajan.)
Teaching Venus Kriyas
If you are a Kundalini Yoga teacher, and are going to teach Venus Kriyas follow these guidelines:
It is best to reserve Venus Kriyas only for those with Kundalini Yoga experience. Use your judgement to assess when your students have
the disicpline to practice Venus Kriyas. In Venus Kriyas, the energetic and sensory connections of the partners are used to elevate the sexual
and sensory energy to a connection based on awareness and the capacity to see the sacred in the other.
Do not line up in lines as in Tantric Yoga. Two people can sit together anywhere. If you line up, then the energy is shared diagonally.
That is not the intention of Venus Kriyas. The energy is only intended to be shared between partners.
Do not create an entire class using Venus Kriyas. Just use one or two along with a Kundalini Yoga kriya. Yogi Bhajan often added a short
Venus Kriya to his Friday classes, to honor the ruling planet Venus.

Here are two separate Venus Kriyas.

Heart Lotus
Sit in Easy Pose or Lotus Pose across from your partner. Look into his or her eyes.
Part 1
Form your hands into a lotus: all your fingers are spread with the hands cupped,
and only your little fingers will touch. The man suspends his little fingers under
the womans little fingers, but the fingers of the partners DO NOT touch. This
makes a heart lotus. Look into the soul, the heart of your partner, through the
eyes. Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.
Part 2
Now place one hand over the other at the Heart Center. Close your eyes and meditate on the Heart
Center. Go deep within, to the center of your being. Continue for 1-1/2 to 3 minutes.
TO END: Inhale deeply and exhale deeply 3 times, then relax.

Pushing Palms
(Mitna Kriya)
Sit in Easy Pose facing your partner, knees touching. Look into your partners eyes. Place your
palms on your partners. Begin pushing the palms alternately while rhythmically chanting the
Guru Gaitri Mantra:
GOBINDAY, MUKANDAY, UDAARAY, APAARAY,
HAREEUNG, KAREEUNG, NIRNAAMAY, AKAAMAY
The woman chants the entire mantra first, then the man.

MANTRAS

ONG NAMO

RAKHE RAKHANHAR

Ong namo guroo dayv namo

Rakhay rakhanhaar aap ubaariun

(ADI MANTRA)

Gur kee pairee paa-eh kaaj savaariun

I bow to the subtle divine wisdom, the divine teacher within

Hoaa aap dayaal manho na visaariun

An ancient yogic mantra which allows the chanter to relate instantly

to the divine teacher within. Adi means primal or first and mantra
means the creative mental projection using sound. It is used to tune
in before Kundalini Yoga classes, to center us in the higher self, and
to spiritually guide both the teacher and the students during the class.

Saadh janaa kai sung bhavjal taariun

ONG SOHUNG
Ong means creative consciousness and so hung means I am Thou.
Chanting the word hung stimulates and opens the Heart Chakra.

PAVAN GURU
Pavan pavan pavan pavan
Par para pavan guroo
Pavan guroo wha-hay guroo,

Saakat nindak dusht khin maa-eh bidaariun

Tis saahib kee tayk naanak manai maa-eh
Jis simrat sukh ho-eh saglay dookh jaa-eh

God Himself is looking out for us,

gives us the light, and takes care of our affairs.
God is merciful, and never forgets us.
God guides us, giving us good people to help us.
God does not allow hurt to come to us.
I take comfort in the thought of God.
When I remember God, I feel peaceful and happy
and all my pain departs.

Pavan is the air, the breath, carrier of the prana, the life force. This is
God in action. This mantra increases the pranic energy and gives the
experience of may the force be with you.

These are the words of Guru Arjan, the 5th Sikh Guru, and are for
complete protection. It is from the evening prayer (Rehiras), which
adds energy to ones being, and helps when you are physically weak
or have limited wealth. It is a victory song which allows us to be
guided by Gods graceful and merciful hand. It does away with the
obstacles to fulfilling ones destiny.

PRITHVI HAI

SA RE SA SA

(ISHT SODHANA MANTRA)

(ANTAR NAAD MANTRA)

Wha-hay Guroo pavan guroo

(PRAN BANDHA MANTRA)

Prithvee hai akaash hai guroo raam daas hai

This mantra balances the Earth and Heavens. It represents the struck
sounds of Earth (pritvi) and the unstruck sounds of Heaven (akash),
crowning with the protection of the Neutral Mind, Guru Ram Das.
(Hai means is.) This mantra can penetrate the cosmos, transcending past, present, and future.

RA MA DA SA
(SIRI GAITRI MANTRA OR SIRI MANTRA)
Raa maa daa saa saa say so hung

Raa=Sun. Maa=Moon. Daa=Earth. Saa=impersonal Infinity.

Say=Thou.
Saa Say=totality of Infinity.
So=personal sense of merger and identity.
Hung=the Infinite vibrating and real.
So Hung= "I am Thou."
This mantra is a healing mantra in Kundalini Yoga and is an attunement of the self to the universe. It brings balance. These eight sounds
stimulate the kundalini flow in the central channel of the spine for
healing. This mantra combines Earth (raa maa daa) and Ether
(saa say so hung), with Saa as the link word.

86

KRI INTERNATIONAL TEACHER TRAINING MANUAL LEVEL 1

Saa ray saa saa, saa ray saa saa, saa ray saa saa, saa rung
Har ray har har, har ray har har, har ray har har, har rung

Saa is the Infinite, the Totality, God. It is the element of ether. It is

the origin, the beginning, and it contains all other effects. It is subtle
and beyond. Har is the creativity of the Earth. It is the dense element,
the power of manifestation, the tangible, the personal. These sounds
are woven together and then projected through the sound of ung or
complete Totality. This is the base mantra of all mantras. Adversity
melts before this mantra. It gives you the capacity of effective communication so your words contain mastery and impact. This mantra
helps you conquer the wisdom of the past, present, and future. It
brings you peace and prosperity even if it wasnt in your destiny.

SAT NAM
(BIJ MANTRA)
Sat naam

This mantra is probably the most widely used mantra in the practice
of Kundalini Yoga. Sat means truththe reality of ones existence.
Naam means the identity. It is a bij (or seed) mantra. Within the
seed is contained all the knowledge of the fully grown tree. The
essence or seed is the identity of truth embodied in condensed
form, Chanting this mantra awakens the soul and gives you your
destiny. This mantra balances the five elements (tattvas).

e recognize that as Kundalini Yoga Teachers we are

committed to living in our higher consciousness.
We conduct our lives in a spirit of integrity. In The
Teachers Oath, The Definition of a Yogi, and The 16 Facets of
Perfection of a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, Yogi Bhajan gives us the
guidelines for this journey of consciousness, the daily practice of
which will support us as Kundalini Yoga Teachers.

The Teachers Oath

I am not a woman. (Mercury finger down)
I am not a man. (Sun finger down)
I am not a person. (Saturn finger down)
I am not myself. (Jupiter finger down)
I am a teacher. (Thumb stays up)

The Definition of a Yogi

The Yogi is not affected by the opposite polarities of life
neither by praise nor by slander, neither by riches nor by poverty,
neither by health nor by illness, neither by life nor by death.
The Will of God is the will of the Yogi. He or she surrenders
his or her personal will to the Will of God.
When Kundalini, the primal force of the Prana (life energy),
penetrates and prevails throughout the chakras, the Yogi remains stable
to the odds of Karma and walks the even path of Dharma.
The Raj Yogi is a sage and a king in the face of all temptations,
situations, events, and environments.
Those who meditate on Guru Ram Das are blessed through
miracles to be royal sages throughout the ages.
Yogi Bhajan, September 1995

The 16 Facets of Perfection of a Kundalini Yoga Teacher

Sola Kalyan Sumpuran
1. A Teacher will never alter the teachings because of personal opinion. You
will teach by example.
2. The higher you grow as a Teacher, the more humble you have to be.
3. The Teacher always serves the students, so they can become ten times
stronger than you, because every student is a Teacher for tomorrow.
4. A Teacher has to be extremely kind, caring, compassionate, and forgiving.
5. As a Teacher you should always poke, provoke, confront, and elevate your
students to excellence.
6. As a Teacher you have to continuously imagine, visualize, believe, expand
in all directions, connect to everything, meditate, practice, and project that you
are Ang Sang Wahe Guru (With every limb, every part of me, I belong to the
Divine.), and that the energy of Guru Ram Das is flowing through you.
7. As a Teacher you will always be in Chardi Kala (elevated spirits) and connected to your higher self, never caught in emotional turmoil. Count your blessings, not your curses. Always be graceful. Glow and grow.
8. As a Teacher you will continuously graduate towards the Divinity and
Infinity that is the essence of your existence. You are not a human born for a
spiritual search, you are a spirit, an Atma (soul), born for an experience as a
human. Your purity and piety as an Atma is always maintained, protected, exalted, projected, as a priority over everything and kept in sight mentally, physically,
and spiritually.
9. As a Teacher listen to, and obey all righteous teachings. If you read something, you will know it; if you write something, you will understand it; if you
teach something, you will perfect it.
It is perfection of your deliverance that gives you grace as a Teacher. Your success as a Teacher lies not in what you know, but in what your student receives.
A Teacher is measured by the growth, dignity, and excellence of the student. If you
find any talent, nurture it, teach it, exalt it to the best of your ability and divinity.
10. As a Teacher do not relate to ego or politics. Always relate to the spirit,
soul, and essence of a person. Always relate to the intelligence, talent, and consciousness of a person. Always relate to the manners, methods, and mentality of
a person. Pure thoughts are the way to universal knowledge and will make you
bountiful, blissful, and beautiful.

Yogi Bhajan, September 1995

11. God and Guru have blessed you with Karma (law of cause and effect). As
a Teacher you must offer yourself in Dharma (lifestyle of righteousness) to honor
the gift of God of life. Never create a drift or rift between you and your Atma.
12. A Teacher wears white cotton clothing while teaching. White clothing
makes you as a Teacher look divine and represent light. The color white represents
the seven colors. Cotton is the flower of the Earth. It is good for your psyche,
your energy, and your nervous system. Your way of dressing should be saintly and
make you glow with grace. You should look like a sage and a prince or princess
of peace and divinity. A Teacher is a Ph.D.Prince or Princess of High Divinity.
13. Just as a seed has to wither to become a tree and bear fruit, Teachers who
do not become perfect students do not become perfect Masters.
14. The Universal Spirit that rotates the Earth can take care of all your problems. As a Teacher you have to learn trust and faith. Regard every breath of life
as a gift. Strive for conscious breathing, breathing one breath a minute.
15. The banner of a Teacher is: In God I dwell. The standard of arms of a
Teacher is: God within me I trust.
The honor of a Teacher is: In the Name of God I serve.
The motto of a Teacher is: Peace of mind and peace within the material world.
16. A Teacher needs to commit to Nam, the God-given identity.
Without Nam, you cannot have the purity of self and the divine
projected grace to master all the elements.
Without commitment there is no character.
Without character there is no dignity.
Without dignity there is no divinity.
Without divinity there is no grace.
Without grace you cannot sacrifice or serve others. Your compassion and presence will not work, and you cannot be happy.
Remember once and for all, happiness is your birthright, and it is always right
to be happy. So be happy, be healthy, and be holy.
We are all holy, because we all have nine holes. Adding two arms and two legs
makes thirteen. You are born with thirteen, you will live with thirteen, you will
die with thirteen. Thirteen (three and one) makes fourCup of Prayer. Prayer is
your power, your protector, and your provider. Sat Nam

with students and with other Teachers. A Teacher recognizes that the studentteacher relationship may involve a power imbalance, even with a student who
is no longer studying with the Teacher.
1. A Teacher recognizes the implicit trust placed in him or her because of the
unique power of the student-teacher relationship. A Teacher consciously
avoids any relationship with a student that is exploitive in any way. i.e., he or
she never uses such a relationship for personal gain or benefit.

the 3HO Global Community.
8. A Teacher treats all communication with students with respectful and
appropriate confidentiality.

7. A Teacher upholds the yogic law If you come empty handed, you will leave
empty handed by requesting students to make an offering before each class.

of our services.
1. A Teacher accurately represents his or her professional qualifications and
certifications along with his or her affiliations and or sponsorships from any
organization(s.)
2. Announcements and brochures promoting classes or courses based on the
Teachings of Yogi Bhajan shall describe them and picture them with accuracy and grace.
4. A Teacher will represent himself or herself, 3HO, IKYTA, and KRI, truthfully
and accurately in all public relations by following the guidelines set by 3HO,
IKYTA, and or KRI, for advertising that correctly reflects the organizations' missions.
TEACHERS IN COMMUNITY
1. A Teacher supports the service of other Teachers through conscious communication that avoids negativity or wrongful attributions regarding the efforts
of other Teachers.
2. A Teacher builds the unity of the 3HO Global Community by embracing diversity, willingness to collaborate and a commitment to act for the benefit of all.
3. A Teacher acts as an integral contributing member of all International (and
National, where appropriate) teaching organizations: 3HO, IKYTA and KRI. He
or she acts as a representative of the professional and ethical policies of these
organizations.
4. Each Teacher cultivates the ethical integrity of our culture as Teachers by his
or her obligation to be alert to, and to seek out assistance for, anyone involved
in a potential breach of those standards by using the appropriate organizational
channel.
PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE
1. A Teacher commits to a regular, daily spiritual practice that includes
Kundalini Yoga and Meditation as taught by Yogi Bhajan.
2. A Teacher commits to the continuous improvement of his or her professional knowledge and skills. He or she fulfils all requirements and training
enhancements developed and presented by 3HO IKYTA and the KRI Aquarian
Trainer Academy (and National Associations, where appropriate.)
4. A Teacher abstains from the use of, or dependency on, alcohol, tobacco,
or drugs (except for medical purposes.) A Teacher does not permit the use of
alcohol, tobacco, or drugs at any Kundalini Yoga course, class, or event.
5. In the yogic tradition, a Teacher eats a vegetarian diet. A Teacher insures
that a vegetarian diet is served at any Kundalini Yoga course, class or event.

Substantial violations of this Code of Ethics and Professional Standards that include changing the teachings, substance abuse, or that may be
harmful to students can result in serious consequences, including the possible loss of Teacher status and other actions as appropriate.
