Provo City School District Custodians

Share Environmental Message with Students
by Jeff Hawkins
Provo City School District
In conjunction with Aprils Bakers Dozen topic EnvironMentor & Green Certification, Provo
City School District (OS1) Head Custodians shared environmentally friendly information not
only with their custodial teams but with the students in their schools. Head Custodians were
challenged to approach teachers in their schools and ask if they could share a brief message with
students about how the (OS1) cleaning process in their schools is managed in a environmentally
responsible way. Many classrooms were already having discussions about protecting the
environment and being green in celebration of April 22nds Earth Day. This proved to be a
perfect opportunity for our custodians to share some information about how we as custodians
in our district are helping to protect the environment while we are cleaning the schools. Head
Custodians discussed environmentally responsible topics such the use of Environmentally
Responsible Cleaning Chemicals, Source Reduction, Indoor Air Quality and the 3 Rs- Recycle,
Reuse, Reduce.
Here are a few more of the specifics that Head Custodians discussed with classes:
Our school District has been recognized at the national level for our efforts to protect the
environment in the cleaning processes we utilize in our schools.
Our custodians use pre-measured, concentrated cleaning chemicals that are Green Seal
Certified. We restrict the use of environmentally harmful compounds such as abrasives,
ammonia, bleach, peroxide(halogens) straight hydrochloric acids etc. that help to safeguard our
environment.
Our custodians use daily cleaning chemicals that require minimal packaging and help reduce
cleaning chemical packaging waste to our landfill by as much as 97%.
Our custodians use Green Seal Certified paper products in our restrooms. The use of Green
Seal Certified paper products helps save trees due to the recycled content in the paper products.
Green Seal Certified Soap ensures that harmful toxins are not being washed down the drain which
ultimately end up in our water system.
Our custodians use Microfiber flat mops that help to reduce water use to clean our schools by
as much as 75% when cleaning/mopping restrooms.
Our custodians use back pack vacuums with 4 level filtration to protect the indoor air
quality. The filters remove 99.97% of debris 0.3 microns in size and larger. This level of filtration
eliminates lung damaging particles from the air we breathe in our schools.

SunsetView Elementary Celebrate Earth Day and Environmentally Responsible
Cleaning Processes

This was a great educational experience for everyone involved and helped make
connections with our Custodial Services Department and our students, teachers
and patrons. Happy Earth Day!
