The School of Education, in the Faculty of the Professions at the University of Adelaide, provides innovative learning experiences for students and professional teachers, trainers and educational consultants who wish to develop or strengthen their expertise.
The Bachelor of Teaching double degree program prepares you for teaching in middle and senior secondary schools, and is also suitable if you intend to work with adult learners. It provides you with the opportunity to pursue education courses from the beginning of your university studies. The major course sequences are taken as part of the chosen academic program in the subject area of the students choice. Each year students also take education courses designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice. The first and third year education courses include observation and experience in school contexts. The final year is taken up entirely with education studies, organised around two five-week periods of teaching practice in secondary schools. And in each year youll also take education courses designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice.

The First Year Learning Centre
Located on the Ground Floor of the Nexus10 building at 10 Pulteney Street, this purpose built facility is free and exclusive to first year students studying programs in Business and Economics.

A minor sequence consists of courses taken over two consecutive years of study (6 x 3 unit courses). The major and minor subject sequences are taken as part of the Bachelor of Arts program in the subject areas of the students choice. In each of these years students also take education courses designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice. Professional Accreditation
The double degree program provides a professional qualification that is recognised for teacher registration purposes in South Australia. In most cases the qualification is portable to other states and overseas countries.

* Students who intend to teach Psychology or a language should seek advice from the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences. ** A Major in Economics, International Business, Management or Marketing must be in addition to a first Humanities and Social Sciences Major.

Why study the Bachelor of Teaching with the Bachelor of Arts?

The Bachelor of Teaching program prepares students for teaching in middle and senior secondary schools. It is also suitable for students intending to work with adult learners. The program is offered as a double degree only and is designed for students who are beginning tertiary study. The primary focus in the first three years of the degree is on completing a major and minor sequence in two different subject areas usually taught at senior secondary level. A major sequence consists of courses taken over three consecutive years of study (8 x 3 unit courses).

What careers can the Bachelor of Teaching / Bachelor of Arts double degree lead to?
The Bachelor of Teaching program prepares students for teaching in middle and senior secondary schools. It is also suitable for students intending to work with adult learners. The teaching program is recognised by education departments in all states of Australia and by most teacher-employing authorities overseas. There are job opportunities for graduates in most subjects, particularly in country areas.

The double degree provides students with the opportunity to pursue education courses from the beginning of their university studies. The primary focus in the first three years is on undertaking study in the two discipline areas in which the student intends to teach. This study generally includes courses taken at Levels 1, 2 and 3 of the degree program. These courses are taken as part of the degree program that accompanies the Bachelor of Teaching in the subject areas of the students choice. In each of the first three years, students also take an education course designed to provide an on-going orientation to educational issues and practice. The first and third year education courses involve observation and experience in school contexts. The final year is taken up entirely with education studies and is commenced after the other degree is completed. This year is organised around two five-week periods of teaching practice, one in the Adelaide metropolitan area, the other in country South Australia. The Bachelor of Teaching is designed primarily for students who have not already commenced university study. Students who have commenced a degree should consider completing their degree and then applying for the Graduate Diploma in Education.

Diploma in

LanguageS
Any student enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University can elect to study a language through the Diploma in Languages. You can start as a complete beginner or with more advanced knowledge, and choose from Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek or Spanish. The Diploma extends your study by one year to fit the required three years of language study, and you graduate with awards in both your program and the Diploma in Languages. You will leave university with language expertise, in both your chosen language and English, communication skills and greater cultural insight. The Diploma in Languages is not available to international students.

The Bachelor of Teaching is designed primarily for students who have not already commenced university study. Students who have commenced a degree should consider completing their degree and then applying for the Graduate Diploma in Education.

VET qualifications
Successful completion of vET AQF Certificate Iv awards meet the minimum entry requirements for most Bachelor degree programs and diploma programs. Admission to a small number of Bachelor degrees requires the successful completion of a vET AQF diploma award. Applicants who have completed at least half a year of higher education study may be considered on the basis of their tertiary academic record and/ or Year 12 results.

If you are over 18 (or will be 18 on February 1 of the year you commence studies) and have not done more than two years (full-time) tertiary study in the last two years you can apply for university entry by completing the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Deferring Your Studies

Study of all Bachelor of Teaching double degrees can be deferred for a period of two years following an offer of a place.

hECS higher Education Loan Program (hECS-hELP)

HECS-HELP helps eligible Commonwealth Supported students to pay their student contribution. Further information on Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP is available at www.studyassist.gov.au

Non-contact time will be required for a range of activities which may include, but are not limited to, assessment tasks, reading, researching, notetaking, revision, writing, consultation with staff, and informal discussion with other students. While the relative proportion of contact and noncontact time may vary from course to course, as a guide, a full-time student would expect to spend, on average, a total of 48 hours per week on their studies during teaching periods. The workload for undergraduate programs is 24 units per year (full-time).

In 2012 the SSAF amount for Full-Time students was $263, and for Part-Time students it was $197. Eligible students may defer this fee to an SA-HELP loan. Student Study Commitment

To successfully complete courses, students will need to allocate an appropriate time commitment to their study. In addition to the formal contact time required for each course (e.g. lectures, tutorials, teaching practicums) students will need to allocate non-contact time.
