1.A wallet contains the same number of pennies, nickels, and dimes. The coins
total $1.44. How many of each type of coin does the wallet contain?
Lets consider the wallet has P pennies, N nickels and D dimes.
And as the the number of each coin is same , we consider x coin of each
category .
So we can write
X( P+ N + D) = $1.44
So
X ( 1 + 5 +10) = 144
( as 1 penny = .01 $ , 1 nickel as 5 pennies, 1
Dime = 10 Pennies)
16x = 144 divide both side by 16
We get

x=9

so the wallet has 9 coins of each ( pennies, Nickel, Dime).

2 .A family has two cars. The first car has a fuel efficiency of 35 miles per
gallon of gas and the second has a fuel efficiency of 25 miles per gallon of
gas. During one particular week, the two cars went a combined total of 1575
miles, for a total gas consumption of 55 gallons. How many gallons were
consumed by each of the two cars that week?
1st Car 35 miles /gallon
2nd Car 25 miles/gallon
Total miles = 1575
gas used = 55 gallons
let first car consumes x gallons
second car consumes y gallons
X+Y = 55
35x +25y =1575
Y = 55 x
35x +25(55 x) =1575
35x + 1375 -25x= 1575
10x = 200
X= 20 Gallons
Y = 55 -20 = 35 Gallons

9 ) Consider the equation given below .

f(x) = 2 cos

x - 4 sin x

0 x 2

a) Find the interval on which f is increasing/ decreasing . b) find local minima

and maxima

Solution: Given : f(x) == 2 cos

x - 4 sin x

0 x 2

The increasing and decreasing interval cab be obtained from first derivative test.
f(x) = -4 cos x sinx - 4cos x
Critical point : f(x) =0
-4cos x sin x -4cos x = 0
-4 cos x ( sin x -1 ) =0
cos x =0 or sin x =1
x= 0 , /2 , 3/2
Check for increasing /decreasing intervals using a number line and sign chart.

the

interval

[0,2 ]

For [0,/2] : plug in x= /4 in f(x ) and check its sign

f(/4) = 4 cos /4 sin /4 -4 ain /4 < 0
for interval [ /2 , 3/2 ] , check for x=
f(3/2) = -4 cos ( sin -1 )
= 4 >0
for [3/2, 2 ]
f(7/4] = -4 cos 7/4 (sin 7p/4 -1 ) <0 as cos 7p/4 is positive and sin 7/4 -1 is
negative.
Increasing interval : [/2 , 3p/2]
Decreasing interval [ 0,/2] U [ 3/2 ,2]

b) Local minima and maxima ,

Check values of f(x) at the critical points
f(0) = = 2 cos

x - 4 sin x

f(/2) = 2( 0 ) -4 (1) = -4

= 2 (1)^2 -4(0) =2

; (0,2)

: (/2, -4)

f(3/2) = 2(0) -4(-1) = 4 : (3/2 ,4)

Local minima: (/2, -4)
Local maxima : (3/2 ,4)
10. Find difference quotient using limit and then find the equation of a
tangent line at f(2)

lim

4 h
h ( x+ h+5 ) ( x+5 )

= -4/(x+5)2
Slope of tangent at x=2 will be difference quotient at x=2
M = -4/ (2+5)2
= -4/49
Use point slope form to get the equation of tangent line at x=2
At x=2 , y=f(2) = 4/7
y - 4/7 = -4/49 (x- 2)
y = -4/49 x + 8/49 +4/7
y= -4/49 x +32/49
