A young woman and her teenage son

flee Glasgow seeking refuge from a
violent crime. They travel overnight to
the isle of Iona after which she is named,
and attempt to live among the religious
community she left behind. Featuring a
stand out performance from Ruth Negga,
Iona is a powerful and affecting work.

Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners
forced to assist the Nazis in large-scale
extermination. When a boy Saul takes
to be his son is killed, Saul becomes

burial. An extraordinary Oscar-winning
debut from Lszl Nemes.

Robert Mapplethorpes photographs was
his life. Intimate revelations from family,
friends and lovers are topped only by
Mapplethorpes candor in a series of
rediscovered interviews impressively
assembled by directors Bailey and

Marker is the master and this double

bill showcases his best-known works.
The former is one of the most influential
science-fiction films of all time, acclaimed
for its radical narrative incorporating
still photographs. The latter is a similarly
complex journey into time and memory, a
free-form, associative travelogue roaming
from Africa to Japan.

After a series of failed gigs, the punk

band The Aint Rights gets an offer to
play in the forests of Oregon. The show
is for a bunch of neo-Nazis, but it pays
well. However, once they reach the site of
the irate skinheads everything that could
possibly go wrong, goes wrong.

Based on the novel of the same name,

co-written by Italian journalist Carlo
Bonino and crime writer Giancarlo De
Cataldo, Suburra is an atmospheric, fastpaced thriller driven by visual verve and a
portrait of imminent collapse. A bravura,
intoxicating work.

and Gay Asians. This was the first
documentary on the experiences and
perspectives of diasporic queer Asians in
North America, and captured the texture

original participants as they encounter
the footage of their younger selves and
reflect on their lives over the intervening
three decades.

For its 22nd edition, Viva! returns with
a specially selected programme of the
most exciting film, theatre and visual
art from across the Spanish-speaking
world. We have two weeks of great
international performances, with
two brand new works commissioned
from Catalan theatre makers and a
showcase of work by Cuban awardwinning playwright Abel Gonzlez Melo.

Juntos y revueltos, 2015

The film programme includes no less

than five UK premieres, plus three sneak
previews of Spanish and Latin American
films set to hit the big screen in the UK
later this year. Delving into the archives,
weve also got four recent Argentinian
classics in our retrospective of the prolific
actor Ricardo Darn, in honour of his new
film Truman. And we also pay tribute to a
local heroine, the late Leonora Carrington,
a Lancashire-born surrealist artist who
made her home in Mexico, with an
introduced screening of the 1973 risqu
horror film The Mansion of Madness.
This year sees the return of our usual
array of filmmaker Q&As, introduced
screenings, a post-screening discussion, a
One Hour Intro, and the Caf Cervantes
language learners event.

Viva! Spanish and Latin American Festival

is presented with Instituto Cervantes
(Manchester) and the Office for Cultural
and Scientific Affairs, Embassy of Spain
in the United Kingdom with the support
