An intimately human sci-fi thriller,

Midnight Special follows a father who
goes on the run to protect his son and
uncover the truth behind his special
powers. Director Jeff Nichols (Mud,
Take Shelter) delivers perhaps his most
impressive and unexpected offering yet.

After their isolated house is destroyed

by a wildfire, John and Karen take
refuge in the nearby forest and eke out
a feral existence, staying away from
the villagers in the valley below. As the
couples backstory unfolds, the reasons
for their self-imposed isolation and their
deep grief become apparent.

A young woman and her teenage son

flee Glasgow seeking refuge from a
violent crime. They travel overnight to
the isle of Iona after which she is named,
and attempt to live among the religious
community she left behind. Featuring a
stand out performance from Ruth Negga,
Iona is a powerful and affecting work.

this controversial but inspiring city.

desperate to provide the boy a proper

Robert Mapplethorpes photographs was
his life. Intimate revelations from family,

Mapplethorpes candor in a series of

A free adaptation of Jane Austens

novella Lady Susan, Love & Friendship is a
cheerfully venomous satire from American
auteur Whit Stillman.

Israeli video artist Omer Fasts first

feature-length film is an adaptation of
the debut novel by Tom McCarthy. The
result is a brutal, somnambulistic game
of deception involving truth and dreams.

In a village in the north of Turkey, Lale

school, playing innocently with boys. The
supposed debauchery of their games
causes a scandal with unintended
consequences. Mustang is an urgent,
topical and potent work that is especially
recommended for teenage female viewers.

Marker is the master and this double

bill showcases his best-known works.
The former is one of the most influential
science-fiction films of all time, acclaimed
for its radical narrative incorporating
still photographs. The latter is a similarly
complex journey into time and memory, a
free-form, associative travelogue roaming
from Africa to Japan.

After a series of failed gigs, the punk

band The Aint Rights gets an offer to
play in the forests of Oregon. The show
is for a bunch of neo-Nazis, but it pays
well. However, once they reach the site of
the irate skinheads everything that could
possibly go wrong, goes wrong.

Based on the novel of the same name,

co-written by Italian journalist Carlo
Bonino and crime writer Giancarlo De
Cataldo, Suburra is an atmospheric, fastpaced thriller driven by visual verve and a
portrait of imminent collapse. A bravura,
intoxicating work.

Dir Aleksandr Sokurov/RU 2003/99 mins/Russian
wEng ST
Sergei Dreiden, Maria Kuznetsova, Leonid
Mozgovoy, Mikhail Piotrovsky

Sokurovs journey through 300 years of

Russian art and history was the first ever
feature to be shot in a single, unedited
take - the ultimate directors cut.
Magically transported to St Petersburgs
Hermitage museum in the early 1700s,
a contemporary filmmaker and a cynical
19th Century French diplomat become
accomplices in an extraordinary voyage
through Russias turbulent past to the
present day.
Please note, there are only two screenings
of this film.

Annette Benson, Brian Aherne, Donald Calthrop

Anthony Asquiths tale of stardom and

scandal on the studio floor of a 1920s
film set epitomises the style of the Jazz
Age, and is accompanied by a brand
new score by celebrated composer John
Altman (Hear My Song, Little Voice).

Out 1 is one of the crowning

achievements of the recently deceased
Rivettes remarkable career. Conceived
as a television mini-series, this nearthirteen-hour monolith consists of
eight feature-length episodes revolving
around two theatre troupes, blackmail
and conspiracy. Multiple characters
introduce multiple plotlines, weaving
a rich tapestry across an epic runtime.
Originally screened just the once in its
full-length version in 1971.

THE NEW BLACK (18)
Tue 31 May, 18:30
Dir Yoruba Richen/US 2013/80 mins

Director Yoruba Richen adeptly

documents the story of an AfricanAmerican community grappling with
the issue of gay and civil rights in light
of the historic fight to win marriage
equality, and charts the evolution of
this divisive issue. This important
film contributes deeply to the highly
charged conversation taking place at
the intersection of race, sexuality and
political rights.

Joan Crawford, Sterling Hayden, Mercedes
McCambridge

A lady saloon owner (Crawford) battles

a female rancher out to frame her for
murder by hiring a former gunslinger
(Hayden) in Rays bold, visionary western.
Experimenting with colour, stylised sets
and trading on operatic emotions, the
film is an effective anti-McCarthy attack
on mob psychology.

Tarkovskys debut feature is an

extraordinarily moving and powerful
story of war and revenge. Determined to
avenge his familys death at the hands
of the Nazis, 12 year-old Ivan joins a
Russian partisan regiment as a scout,
but, as his missions become increasingly
dangerous, it is decided that he must
be removed from the front line. Ivan
resists and convinces his commanding
officers to allow him to carry out one last
expedition.

local heroine, the late Leonora Carrington,
a Lancashire-born surrealist artist who
made her home in Mexico, with an
introduced screening of the 1973 risqu
horror film The Mansion of Madness.
This year sees the return of our usual
array of filmmaker Q&As, introduced
