Vocations to the Priesthood

The Archdiocese of Chicago Vocations Office helps men discern a call to

the priesthood through retreats, visits to the seminary and discernment opportunities. As well, the Vocation
Office works with men to determine their eligibility to apply to the seminary for the diocesan priesthood in
Chicago. Finally, the Vocations Office actively works to create a culture supportive of vocations through
promotion, education, and parish based efforts to raise awareness.More information on becoming a priest in
the Archdiocese of Chicago is available by contacting: Fr. Francis Bitterman Archdiocesan Vocations Office

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The Second Vatican Council decreed that the
devotional life of the Church should be examined
and reformed with an eye towards expressing Easter
faith. This encouragement for creativity has deep
roots in our tradition, and some attempts at reform
show great promise. One of the great treasures in our
devotional repertoire is a familiar feature of Lent:
the Way of the Cross. The faithful walk a path
recalling the events of Christs passion, a
contemplative experience increasingly enriched
these days by scripture and song. There are fourteen
stations in the usual configuration, although in recent
years, a fifteenth station of the Empty Tomb has
been added. Why stop there? Why not develop a
similar journey structured on the theme of the
appearances of the Risen Lord?

Over the last decade, a Via Lucis, or Way of

Light, has developed as a companion to the Via
Crucis. It has been celebrated at the Vatican and is
catching on elsewhere. There are fourteen stations,
beginning with the Women Carrying Spices to the
Tomb, continuing with the familiar appearances of
the Lord at Emmaus, the Upper Room, the shore of
Tiberias. The journey ends with stations recalling the
Apostles wait with Mary for the advent of the
Spirit, and with Pentecost. This is fertile ground
indeed for the genius of artists, musicians, preachers,
and liturgists. This is a living example of how many
of our traditions are born to fill a great spiritual
need, and spread to every corner of the Church. It
may even come soon to a church near you. Maybe
next Eastertime! Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

REVISITING OUR BAPTISM

A mere seven weeks ago thousands of new
Church members were baptized. Their new life in
Christ has once again infused new life into the
Church. Their new-found faith has inspired and
bolstered the faith of those who have followed
Christ for many years. As the Easter season nears
its end, we revisit the scene of our baptisms. In the
second reading we hear Christ calling us: Come. .
. . Let . . . the one who wants it receive the gift of
life-giving water (Revelation 22:17).
But our baptism is not one of water only. John
refers to washed robes, and we know that this
washing is to be in the blood of the Lamb. To
make sure we get this message, we have todays
first reading from Acts. It is the story of Stephen,
the first Christian to be killed for his faith in Jesus.
We remember the promise and also the cost of
being a disciple of Christ.

Help the Vulnerable: Urge Elected Leaders to Pass

a State Budget
Every 30 seconds someone counts on Catholic Charities
for help. We are now asking for your help. Please lend
your voice to advocate for the State of Illinois to end its
budget stalemate and pass a budget that cares for the poor
and most vulnerable in our communities. Catholic
Charities is currently owed more than $25 million by the
State of Illinois a number that grows by at least $2 million
per month.
Please take time today to call your state elected officials
with this simple message, I am a voter in your district. I am
contacting you on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people
who depend on our states safety net of human services,
especially the more than 1 million people served by
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. If you
do not know who your state representative and senator are,
please call the State Board of Elections at (217) 782-4141
or visit www.elections.il.gov and click on New District/
Official Search. You can find more information and a
template advocacy letter at www.CatholicCharities.net on
the homepage.
