1. Introduction
About this Document

Objective

Target
audience

The objective of this document is to provide detailed instructions on the

proper installation of the following WiBAS equipment:

Base station Radio Box (BRB) 26 / 28 GHz

Base station Radio Antenna (BRA) 26 / 28 GHz(1)

This document is intended for technical personnel (installers) with experience

in the installation and assembly of outdoor radio equipment, on the buildings
roofs, and especially on masts or towers.
The installers must also have experience in carrying out antenna alignment
works, by using the appropriate tools (compass, inclinometer, etc.) and the
required site information (geographical co-ordinates, etc.).
Further, it is recommended that the installers are familiarized with the
dangerous conditions that may exist during the installation of telecom
equipment in outdoor environments and on high buildings or structures.

Safety Precautions

WORKING ON THE BUILDINGS ROOF

During stormy weather, do not perform any mechanical assembly or
antenna beaming works on the buildings roof.
The metal structure of towers/ masts is prone to lightning.

PLUGGING/ UNPLUGGING COAXIAL CONNECTORS

Never plug (or unplug) the connector of the coaxial IF cables from the
outdoor transceiver boxes (BRBs), when the respective indoor equipment
is powered on and operating.
There is risk of equipment failure and/ or electrical shock, as the IF cable carries
the DC operating voltage (-48 V) for the outdoor transceiver.
Before plugging or unplugging the IF cable in/ from the BRB box, you must first
extract or shut down the respective interconnected indoor unit.

PROPER GROUNDING
Ensure the effectiveness of the construction of the grounding system
before powering up the WiBAS equipment at the Base Station.
In case of inappropriate grounding system, there is risk of equipment failure and/
or electrical shock.
Ensure that the outdoor grounding system measures a path resistance of < 3 .

WiBAS
Installation Manual (BRS 26/28 GHz) - Edition 1.1

Site Prerequisites, Continued

Outdoor
grounding
system

A dedicated, low-resistance grounding system (typically < 3 ) is required.

A grounding point (designated GND) should be located close to the mounting
position of the BRB radio boxes.
Each BRB will be connected to this grounding point, via the supplied
grounding cable. This will provide protection of the equipment against
harmful lightning conditions.

Coaxial cables

The coaxial cables, connecting the indoor units with the outdoor BRB boxes,
should be of coaxial 75-ohm type.
The maximum length of these cables depends on their quality and the
degradation that they impose to the IF signal.
Typical length of IF cable is 175 m (using RG-11 low-loss coaxial cable of 8.3
dB/ 100 m at 420 MHz attenuation).
NOTE

Proximity to
GSM (2G / 3G)
installations

Under no circumstance should the total attenuation (imposed

by the IF cable itself) exceed 15 dB.

GSM Cables:
The WiBAS coaxial cables must be spaced from neighboring GSM cables
and antennas for at least 30 cm.
The cable must be in good condition, without any visible breakings or
deterioration and properly terminated, as instructed in this manual.
Also, extra care must be taken during the cable unrolling from the bin, as
accidental twists may affect cables performance.
GSM Antennas:
When WiBAS and GSM equipment is to be collocated, BRB / BRA must be
installed on the same pole / mast, below or above the neighboring GSM
antennas and at a distance no less than 4 m.
If a different pole / mast is the only option, then the BRB should be installed
in such a way that it is located outside the -20 dB radiation pattern of all
neighboring 2G / 3G antennas, with a minimum horizontal distance of 4 m
between the pole (where the BRB / BRA is installed) and the poles
accommodating GSM antennas.

18

WiBAS
Installation Manual (BRS 26/28 GHz) - Edition 1.1

Site Prerequisites, Continued

Premises
requirements

The outdoor equipment, inclusive of the BRBs and the BRA antennas,
should be mounted on a wall, mast or on a tower.
The mast, onto which a BRB / BRA system is to be mounted, should be
perfectly perpendicular to allow correct alignment of the antenna.
For wall mounting installation:
- The wall-mounting surface should be cement or brick masonry.
- The holes, required for inserting the wall plugs (upats), should be drilled
at positions where no built-in cables are running.
Each antenna should point toward the covered geographical sector,
according to the planned co-ordinates. No obstacles should exist within the
antennas beaming lobes.
Access to the installation premises must be facilitated during the installation
period.
The roof must be engineered to bear the weight of the service personnel
and the outdoor equipment.
Appropriate cable conduits should exist for the routing of installed cables,
inclusive of the coaxial IF cable(s) connecting the indoor equipment with
the outdoor BRB boxes on the buildings roof.

Introduction

Tightening
torques

This section provides detailed instructions on the outdoor installation of BRB

radio boxes with integrated BRA antennas. The whole installation for a single
BRB / BRA system requires:

Two installers (for the pole / wall mounting procedure).

Typically 1 hour (for complete assembly and installation).

The following table gives the maximum tightening torques that must be
applied for a safe and secure BRB / BRA installation:
Exceeding these values may result in breakages or
damages to equipment. If possible, use appropriate tools of
adjustable tightening torque, especially for points 3, 5 & 6.

Preparing BRB & BRA

Introduction

This procedure concerns the preparation of BRB radio box and BRA antenna
prior to their assembly and positioning.

Procedure

To prepare the BRB / BRA, proceed as follows:

Step

Action

From the back of BRA, remove the amber adhesive tape protecting
the waveguide flange:
NOTE

To avoid dust from entering the BRAs exposed

flange, you need to proceed immediately to the
next steps to the final assembly with the BRB.

Procedure

To carry out the pointing procedure, proceed as follows:

Step
1

Action
With the R.13 spanner, slightly loosen the bolts (1) and (2) on the
mounting bracket, so that the whole BRB/ BRA/ mounting bracket
system can be moved with a relative resistance, around both
elevation and azimuth axis.

Installing the Coaxial Cable

Introduction

This section concerns the installation of the terminated coaxial cable onto the
BRB.
NOTE

Procedure

After completing the termination and installation of the

coaxial cable at the Base Station, it is strongly
recommended to place appropriate adhesive labels at both
ends of the cable, for easy identification of the assigned
sector at any time.

To install the terminated coaxial cable (RG-11) onto the BRB, proceed as
follows:
Step
1

Action
Using the appropriate ratchet spanner (R.14), install the F-type
connector of the terminated coaxial cable onto the BRBs mating
F-type receptacle. To locate, refer to photo on page 25.
Apply a maximum tightening torque of 4.5 Nm.

Use electrical tape (supplied) and wrap around the entire area
around the termination. Tightly apply sufficient length of tape.

Use the rubber tape (supplied) and cover the entire termination
area over the applied electrical tape.

Finally, apply a second layer of electrical tape to complete the

protection of the F-type connection.

End of procedure.
